... I get that. I imagine you started with balata balls, MB's and persimmon woods. The game was so much more difficult with that equipment. While I enjoy my autoFlex Dream 7 shaft and my crazy forgiving Qi10 driver, I am torn between modern equipment making the game too easy for elite players and especially the Pro's. So I am a huge bifurcation fan because most equipment rules should effect their game but no Am's. I am conflicted because I am in favor of a ball rollback for the Pro's but not Am's. But I would rather both than neither. As crazy forgiving as modern drivers are I still see most I play with hitting slices and needing two good shots to cover 300yds so a ball rollback won't make much difference for them but what little difference it does make is a negative that isn't needed.  If and it's a big IF, the ball travels less than 3-5 yds for the 180-240 drives I think it will be a fail by the USGA. I don't think it will but we will find out in 5 years.

... These are just my opinions. I don't see illegal wedge grooves helping the average mid to high index golfer.  While Pro's should battle their nerves under pressure and anchoring a putter alleviates that to some degree, I couldn't care less if any Am anchored their putter to their chin/chest/belly if it helps them in any way. The USGA has a difficult job juggling what is best for Pros AND Ams and are in some respects, a no win situation. So I certainly get some are not fans.

... But combined with most Ams I play with make their own rules so the USGA just doesn't matter for most. They roll the ball in the fairway or rough, they take relief from a divot, they take a breakfast ball or several of them and they use different balls in the fairway and on the green. They move their ball out of a deep footprint in a bunker that a careless player left without raking (something a Pro never faces) and a myriad of other rule infractions. Good for them if that helps them enjoy a recreational game. I just think like Refs and Umps, the USGA is in a thankless position.

Agreed. I concede that the pre-1994 equipment was more difficult to use, and I don't think we need to go all the way back. But I think a minor change in forgiveness and distance rules is warranted.

I prefer skill to be the deciding factor in an outing.

Might I suggest that if you want skill to be the “deciding factor” and not game improvement clubs, that you replace your Ping G430 seven wood with a three iron?

I have replaced the 7w. Although high lofted woods have always been around and have always been easier to hit than irons. I guess I need to update my profile though.
