Testers Wanted! Titleist SM10 and Stix Golf Clubs ×

First restoration project

Recommended Posts

First time cleaning up an old set of Titleist 690 mb and need advice on where to start. The faces and soles have quite a bit of rust. I’ve read through the forums, did a google search, watched YouTube and still not sure what the best strategy is to remove the rust. I’m indecisive if I’ll remove the heads and send them out for resurfacing, mostly due to the cost.

Anticipated order of events

1. Remove rust. Any recommendations on where to start? I was planning just start with soap, water and wire brush then gradually try more abrasive methods.

2. Remove and replace paint on numbers and lettering. Maybe just use the wife’s nail polish.

3. Remove s300 shaft label. I’ll plan to use goof off to remove adhesive.

4. Remove and regrip.

5. Loft/Lie back to standard, probably take these to local golf mart.

6. sharpen grooves with groove sharpener

Like I said, this is my first time, not looking to invest too much financially at this point but I know it will just take time. In the end, this set will be a second set more for nostalgia.

Thanks for reading and any tips in advance!

I'd be looking locally to try and find a place that does small batch chrome plating.  Perhaps chat with a couple of local motorcycle or "speed" shops and ask them who they use.  The rust developed after the plating was worn off; if you don't redo the plating the rust is going to show up pretty quickly after the restoration.

Paint fill after the replating.

from a to original point of view

The Titliest clubs are chrome plated when you see rust that means the plating has been worn. The club would need to be stripped and rechromed.

from an I'm just figuring out what I can accomplish point of view.

a nylon wheel on a drill or on a bench grinder can remove the rust without much damage to the head. Then a polishing with a black rouge and switch buffing wheel will deliver a high polish look however rust will reappear because the chrome is worn off.

For removing the shaft labels I'd suggest using acetone, I dont have any experience with goo gone but Im sure can work.

removing the head makes it easier to clean and polish  but not required depending on your level of effort.

Thanks for the advice! My time has been limited due to work obligations but I was able to use soap and water with metal brush on the PW and here is the before and after of the face.
