I have watched 8 of the movies and my favorite was “The Greatest Game Ever Played”.

I've been trying to make my way through classic golf movies lately, but I have to say I haven't even heard of some of these!

The ones I've seen:

  • Tin Cup
  • Caddyshack
  • The Greatest Game Ever Played
  • Happy Gilmore

Will definitely be adding the rest of these to my golf movie watchlist!

Whenever I see Tin Cup (1996), the same thoughts come to mind:

  • Exactly when did metal wood head and graphite shaft come into play?
  • That’s a young Phil Mikkelsen.
  • I think my swing is better than Don Johnson’s.

EDIT: I think it back—I thinking of Pierce Brosnan’s swing in “The Thomas Crown Affair.”

Banning (1967) didn't seem to make the list for some reason.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banning_(film)

Not the greatest golf movie ever, but probably the best cast ever in a golf movie: Robert Wagner, Gene Hackman, Jill St. John, Anjanette Comer, Guy Stockwell, Susan Clark, James Farentino and more.

About 25 years ago, someone gave me a copy on VHS, so it is hard to share.  It will appear on TCM every once in a while.

Definitely as good or better than any movies on the above list.

Also, a shout-out to Hollywood actor Bob Wilke, who was reputed to be the best golfer among all the Hollywood stars of his era.  He appeared in an episode of My Three Sons as a pro golfer.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_J._Wilke

After retiring from the PGA of America, I did some demo days and club fitting for various OEMs.

We played Kanawaki in the National amateur championship, i think in 2016 or 2017. This is where "the greatest game ever played" was filmed, so I watched the movie and it was fun to relate to some of the scenes where they were filmed. Good movie as well. Happy Gilmore ( I am a Boston Bruins fan) and Caddyshack are my go to's. I can relate to some of the characters in Caddyshack as I grew up playing in that time frame. My friends dad was similar to Rodney Dangerfield character, not quite as over the top but we used to call him "King of the desert" quite the character.... fun thread though....

My top 3 made the list. Bagger Vance, Tin Cup and Happy Gilmore. I haven't seen Tommy’s Honour or The Greatest Game Ever Played. I guess I'll add them to my must watch list! Great idea to share this list when a lot of the US is under a bunch of snow or freezing or both!

Have seen:  Tommy's Honour, Tin Cup, Caddyshack, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Seve, Happy Gilmore, Bobby Jones, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Seven Days in Utopia, The Squeeze, and Loopers

While Caddyshack was good, Mr. Gilmore takes the crown and the gold jacket.  My favorite non-comedy is either Tommy's Honour or Bobby Jones with Loopers not far behind.

Oh man - okay - sadly I was working on an article just like this but someone beat me to the punch (stupid not being enough hours in the day where I'm not working and the kids are still at school 😉 ).  But trust me when I tell you: watch "The Phantom of the Open."  Soon.  It's an INCREDIBLE performance by Mark Rylance, and the movie is genuinely funny and endearing. TLDR: amateur who's TERRIBLE at golf decides winning the Open would be good for his family's fortunes, so he enters as a professional (no handicap required), and is (as guessed) terrible. SO bad, in fact, that he makes history.  The best part is that he keeps trying to play in successive Opens, lol.

I know we don't really know each other, but trust me: it's FANTASTIC.  I'd be shocked if any of you didn't love it.

That being said, Tin Cup is the best golfing movie ever made, hands down. It's not as FUNNY as Caddyshack or Happy Gilmore, but it's the BEST.  Come at me, bro 😉

Ok, first of all, they are all great golf movies/films.

Secondly, you have to separate them. These are mine

Comedy films, Caddyshack if over 40, Happy Gilmore any age.

Best golf story, Bagger Vance and Tin Cup

Absolutely worst golf flicks, Birdies! the movie, and The Netflix cup (technically a documentary)

Have not seen phantom of the open or 8 days in utopia (yet)

In all honesty, watching Happy Gilmore is great fun. But I will always have a spot in my heart for Tin Cup.
