Wedge lofts

Right now I play a mashup of wedge brands since I lost the PW (a 46 loft) to my iron set. I have a Callaway MD5 48 to replace the lost PW, a Taylormade Hi-Toe 56 and an old Accupro 60. Had a 52 but it was stolen. So I’m not loving the 8 degree gap between my 48 and 56.

Just found a great condition PW (again, 46) that matches my set. Also just bought a set of 3 MD5 wedges, which are 52, 56, 60.

So now I have a 46, 48, 52, 56, 60. My logic tells me to sell the 48 because 2 degrees between it and my 46 seems too close. But then I have a 6 degree gap between my 46 and 52. Also having trouble wanting to drop the 48 is because I love the way it feels and I’ve got really good with it. It’s the reason I decided to buy more MD5’s

Wondering if anyone else has had a similar dilemma and what you did about it?

considering you own the options to be able to test the distances for each then I would do that and determine the best fit for the bottom of your bag. Pretty much what @cnosil said. I know some people that use a 46° PW from their set and a 46° specialty wedge because they go 2 different distances and it works for their gapping.

Another question is how many slots do you have for wedges? If it’s 3 I would bend the 46 to 47, the 52 to 51, and leave the 56 as is. If you have space for 4 wedges I would bend the 46 to 47, 52 to 51 and play the 56 and 60 as is. Gap tests should tell you what you need to do but I think the 48 is the odd man out.

Repeat of what has been said.  Gap between the numbers on the clubs, don't really matter.  UNLESS they equate to a gap in HOW FAR YOU HIT THEM.

I had a gap at 125 yards, with lofts of 9i-40, PW-45, AW-50, and 56d.

When it was time for new clubs, I bought new clubs I made sure the lofts(as I calculated them), with the addition of a 4th wedge(eliminated 3H) would fill in the gap, and it worked for me.  9i-38.5, PW-43, AW-48, 52d, 56d.

Lastly, I am not sure if you love your 60?  Many find it difficult to full swing, and or chip, and pitch with, requiring such a hard swing to get any distance out of....but if you use it often then keep it.

It's about having around a 10 or so yard gap between full swing clubs, wedges included.

Go hit each club and get carry distances.   Pick the wedges that provide the gapping that you need; this may not be an equal degree difference between clubs.

52 56 60

Played golf for over 50 years until my health and business calendar reduced my time to less then 5 rounds a year. Then 4 years ago I retired, changed my diet and lifestyle, lost 100 pounds and got back on the course. Its been a struggle but things are getting better.

I play Taylormade Milled Grind 2's Raw Black, 52 and 56 degrees. Looking to update this year but these are still in great shape. Anything higher that 56 is just not worth me hitting.

My set pitching wedge is 46 degrees too, and I have a 52 and a 58 degree wedge. I find that I can do pretty much everything I need to with those lofts. I previously had a 52, 56 and 60 and I personally found that I never really used the 56 degree, and I would rather allow space for an extra hybrid at the top end up my bag, rather than have an additional wedge.

Between half shots, three quarter shots and full shots, I've got enough coverage of yardages from 120 yards and in. It works for my needs.

T100 PW is 46 and then I carry a 52 and 58 degree Vokey.   Used to have 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges but wanted to add a 3 wood to the bag so had to spread out the gapping a bit.  Hasn't been a huge issue overall, just have to be a bit more creative I guess.

I play a 54d vokey sm10 D grind and a 58d Taylor made mg3 8d bounce, and mizuno p and g wedges. I use the 54 and 58 almost exclusively inside 100 yards. I carry the gap wedge 110 and the 54 90, so I play a ‘10:30’ swing on the gap for 100 yd carry shots. It works well for me.

I've got two wedges that are a "given" in my bag.....a 54* and a 58* Maltby M-series.   They both have old Ping R-flex wedge shafts in them, and although (at age 78) I'm beyond using a shaft that stiff, I've left them in b/c they feel heavy to me, and I prefer a wedge to feel heavy b/c the chipping / pitching swings are much slower than full swings.

Then I've got the PW and Gap wedges that match my set.   The lofts of those are 45* and 49*.   In my mind, the PW is nothing more than a full swing club, since lofts of modern clubs have been strengthened so much over the years.  The gap wedge presents some problems b/c it is as light as the rest of the irons in my set, so when I try to chip or pitch with it the club tends to feel a little light.   I have another gap wedge (an Indi, also 49*) that I switch back and forth with the wedge that matches my set.   It also feels a bit too light, so I'm always looking for something that's a better fit......

I have been using a mashup of 60, 56 and 52 degree wedges of Ping, Cleveland and Taylormade up until a couple of weeks ago.

I just got the Takoma 48, 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges and really getting to enjoy them from the couple of rounds I have played with them so far. I like having all the different lofts for different shot types and full swing increments

I have set pitching and gap wedges and add a 56 and 60. I had a set sand wedge (56) but didn’t like the bounce so set it aside early.

Currently playing the INDI wedges I tested here for MGS last summer/fall and am still reporting on.  They are 50-54-58 Flex S (all with 10* bounce).  IMG_7362.jpeg.f2550acc988825706303bc91181876b4.jpegBefore that it was Cleveland CBX wedges with same lofts and 11-12-10 degrees of bounce respectively.  IMG_7351.jpeg.113731b9fb7df5de8f9fc4d3ae2c23c9.jpegIn terms of PW (I have played/now play 45-46* loft) pretty much a “set” wedge. Just built a 45* Maltby TS-1 that plays nicely with the INDIs.  All that to say I’m more of a specialty wedge person….shoot, my whole bag is not a brand specific set - mix of all sorts of brands - Ping, Edel, Maltby, Indi, Odyssey….🤪IMG_8126.jpeg.6f4560f13091480020bff23aa1582cf2.jpeg

Currently I have a Wilson Staff D9 Forged PW, Voley SM8 52, 56 and 60 but been already considering going PW, 54, 58.   Then backfill the vacancy with a 5 wood (fwiw).
