How do I know when I should get a fitting?

Howdy fellow Spies!

How do i know when its a good time in my golf "life cycle" to get a full bag fitting??

I originally started playing in 2015 during college (USNA) as a PE Class and was hooked. Since then, as I've traveled and moved with the military, my golf consistency has ebb and flowed as time and availability is usually a factor with military commitments and family. Back in 2020 i hopped on a Callaway Pre-Owned sale on a full set of Rogue clubs to finally get myself into a "real" set of clubs. I have since replaced my original Rogue irons with a set of Rogue Pros from a coworker that was moving and had just upgraded irons, and now my bag sits as in my WITB (below).

I'm starting to get out on the course more, and slowly upgrading clubs (putter first, 🙏 for DF3 Tester), but at this point, I'm playing on 6 year old clubs and wonder if I should get a fitting to help guide my upgrades. Currently, my handicap is hovering around a 22-25, but I've gotten it as low as 18 when I'm playing consistently. I've never hit a simulator, so I couldn't tell you my yardages or my swing speed, so maybe that in and of itself is worth the fitting?

There's a Club Champion near me that is having a sale on fittings, which is what originally sparked my interest.

Sorry for rambling, early morning and just starting my caffeine drip at work ☕

Thanks for any and all assistance Spies!

Hey @Dan1993 you’re probably due for a change of clubs anyway, so I’d highly recommend a club fitting. It really changed the results of my game.

I did a full bag fitting at TrueSpec because it was no charge through a company deal. But I’ve also heard great things about fittings at retailers and PXG. Personally, I’m toying with going for a driver fitting at a retail store since I have my eye on a couple of new drivers, keeping the specs, and then buying one after the new models drop next Spring.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, at this point, that's what I figured. I'll most likely look to get a fitting after this summer. Really try and dial in my swing and stay consistent with playing and developing. I figured a Club Champion or GolfTec would probably serve me best so I can try everything currently on the market. I have 0 brand loyalty at this point and will take whatever works best.

To answer your question about when to get a fitting I will ask you a question.  How do you know the clubs you bought were the right clubs for your swing?  Going into a store and just trying clubs is kind of a fitting; may not be the best, but you are trying to figure out what works.  A demo day is a type of fitting.   Getting someone at the golf store to help you try clubs is a fitting.  Answering the online questionnaire on an OEM website is a fitting.  My answer to your question is that you should always do some kind of fitting and not just buy off the rack.

Regarding what I quoted; a good fitting will not have you try everything.  Clubs are designed different and some simply aren’t right for you.  For example I am a low spin player so clubs that are produce lower spin are clubs I probably shouldn’t try.   If  make contact all over the face,  may want to look at someone more on the game improvement side and not muscle back irons. Also, budget is typically one of the discussions held prior to starting the fitting process so you won’t try clubs or shafts that are above your price range.

All good points! TBH, i dont know that they were the right clubs for my swing, I pretty much went with what looked good and had good reviews when I bought. So i very well could be fighting the clubs more than playing. At the time when buying, I was away on training, racking up a lot of per diem, and the hotel was right next to the golf course, and wanted better than the Top Flites that I was currently playing. But youre, right, the budget is probably my biggest concern right now.

Whenever purchasing new clubs you should get fit. There are small changes that happen with weighting, cg location, face thickness. How those changes affect the ball flight will vary for each person.

Getting fit gives the golfer clubs that work with their swing rather than the golfer having to manipulate things to get the club to hit the shot they want to hit.

There are different level of fittings and different experience level of fitters. Find a reputable fitter to do the fitting.

On a side note I’ve had the chance to play USNA course a few times. I like the course

Thanks a bunch! Question for you! How do you like your PXG set? Saw that they have a "hero" discount and they have a fitter near me out in Suffolk.

The USNA course is great, and was tons of fun to learn to play on, but man are there some challenging approaches. Lots of elevated greens.

I haven’t updated my bag or any of my info on here in awhile.

I am a recovering club ho lol. I loved my pxg and have had them twice now. The hero discount is nice and was part of the factor into buying them.

Yeah the course has some tough greens and some tough hole layouts. Last time I played the female golf team was out just in front of us and they were fun to watch when I could catch their shots
