Body Aches & Pains

This is a good place to lay down the word on how ya deal with those nasty aches and pains.  Head to toe - Let us know!

I've had a sore back now for several weeks.  I first notice a little pull at my gym while I was doing my bench press reps. I had my back arched and I felt the little burn and didn't pay it much attention at the time.  I left the gym to run by Lowe's to pick up some shrubs my wife wanted to plant.  I bent over to pick up a little box wood and felt the back catch this time.  I could barely straighten up!  Bending over sideways to pick up a little fricking shrub almost took me to the ground.   I hobbled up to check out and thought it was just a little discomfort.

Ok two weeks later I was feeling back to normal and was at the grand babies house. The little two year old wanted me to help him on the sliding board. Again I reached over to the side to place him on the sliding board and boo yahhhhh, the old back had that little twinge again.  I helped him a few more times (should have stopped after the 1st time  ) and finally I had to wave the white flag..

The next day I could barely get out of bed.   I had to cancel my Tuesday blitz with the old farts and again my group on Thursday.   Dayuuuummmmm  what the heck as my back has always been stronger than a bull in mating season.

Went to the doc and got some pain meds and muscle relaxers so I'm almost back to normal again.  Does anybody ever have this happen and if so,  any advice and what are some good old man type back stretches ?

Don't bend over sideways!  Maybe the third time you'll remember!  We aren't as young as we used to be, and I think you are well past the mating season.

I am well past the weight stuff at the gym.  I do the exercycle and lots of stretches; that's about it.  I lost my shape years ago (unless you consider Round a shape), and any attempt to do weight training again will certainly land me in the hospital.  I have lots of aches and pains that vary day-to-day, but low back pain is always there, and I have to work on flexibility.  But I can still bend over and touch the ground; working on touching it with palms.  I really need to work on more flexibility in my core though.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I do a fairly simple yoga routine every day to maintain flexibility. Most of my adult life up to about 3 years ago, I took 9 ibuprofin and 3 aleve every day. Now, I take none. I also quit smoking, quit drinking booze, and quit drinking anything carbonated over the past 5 years or so. I still have some aches and pains, but they are minimal - nothing like the days when medical doctors had me convinced that I had degenerative arthritis, fibromyalga, and who knows what else...

Talking about not bending over sideways reminds me of what my wife's trainer told her.  She told her the exact thing and when my wife discussed my aching back the trainer caught me at the gym a few days later.   She said, "old man don't you know better than to bend over sideways while picking something up?"  I told her it was only a little old boxwood shrub.   She said, "doesn't matter how small something is. It's the torque it puts on your muscles etc. that strains them. You lift straight up at the gym, so you should know better. She then said she would beat me with a hose if she ever heard me picking something up leaning over to the side.   Tough old heifer so I better do right.

There is a yoga class at my gym I need to sign up for.  The thing is I've had three surgeries on my right knee, broke my right hip a couple years ago, and have arthritis (spur)  in the left side of my neck. I'm all wore out and busted up so there may be some of them poses ya'll do where I would have to work around.

I don't drink as much these days as hang overs hurt more than they use to.  I drink more water than anything with maybe some occasional ice tea. I gave up smoking and chewing several years ago.  The only thing I'm bad about is craving sweets.  Stuff like ice cream and occasional chocolate is a killer and I'm betting sugar can cause alot body aches and such.

A good yogi will not put you in a position to hurt yourself. They will also not rush you to go beyond your limitations.

You'll honestly be amazed - I bet you are much more flexible and balanced than 90% of the people in a beginners yoga class. It's hard to believe how far some folks let themselves go before they get off the couch.

Sounds good! I do enjoy my gym time. Maybe I need to focus more on good stretches than weights. I'll look into it

Funny I am reading this with the heating pad on my back as I type. I do stretch some but for some time around the season changes my back will act up some. I have ever really injuried it any per say but did strain it abut 10 years ago hitting a driver full wide open blast in 40* weather with absolutely no warm up. I played today and it was warm but started cooling off some toward the end of the round.

I guess I am lucky for all the golf balls I have hit in the past and all the beating and banging up I got over the years driving trucks, racing cars and riding motorcycles. I do take ibuprofen to loosen up and stay loose

Pretty darn good if you ask me even though I do not do the alcohol thing anymore. I do the Coffee/ Ibuprofen thing now though. Now back in the car racing days especially when running those rough dirt tracks 2 nights in a row I would be sore and banged up and the boys in Charlotte would get a money match up on Sunday afternoons and call me. I had my routine take 5 ibuprofens and two shots of Mr Beam and hit it I would be ok. Now to be perfectly clear I would drive 60 miles to Charlotte and then do the 2 shots and Ibuprof never would drink and drive even in my party days.

LOL-- One Saturday night I got into a bad wreck in the heat race totaled the car and one other one. Got in the back up car and started in the rear in the main ran 7th or 8th that night. My right wrist was hurting some and I was sore all over. that Sunday my buddy from Charlotte came down and picked me up because we had a big match in Cheraw SC that day so I started early on the self medication. Ended up playing 36 that day and my wrist was killing me the last round and had run out of Mr Beam and it was a no Sunday sales on alcohol in that county. Ended up shooting a 69 icing my wrist (yeah I USED to could play this game some).

Man that Monday morning I could not move the right wrist and it looked like a football. Went to my MD who is a friend of mine. Did the x-ray thing and he asked when did you hurt your wrist? Never mind he said I know when he was in the stands Saturday night he was a big racing fan and incidently one of his collegues who was an MD raced in my class too. He kinda got on me but in my fashion I told him shoot I did ok came from 30th in a back up car and ran 7th and shot 74/69 Sunday and won more money on the golf course than I did in the race car.

Ends up I had a transverse fracture in the big bone in my wrist. Had to do the cast thing for a few weeks and heck yes I drove race cars with the cast on and got some side action with me one hand putting too!

That is just one of the stunts I pulled off back in the day wonder why I hurt now? BTW I am sore this AM because the weather has dropped down to 30* F this morning and frost on the ground

I had many nicknames back in the day one was "Ironman" and the other one was "Brainless"

On the minis in Florida and in this area too I was known as "hippie Stu" or "Ponytail Stu" also in Florida was called "Trailer Park"-- Lots of stories behind those names

We have one at home and a couple at my gym.   They really do help relieve soreness although it hurts when you are on a pressure point.  No pain no gain with a roller :D

At my age, aches and pains are expected and are not totally bad things.   They let me know that I am still alive.  It's when they stop that would cause me to worry.

I hear ya partner!  If I don't wake up in the morning feeling like the achey breaky monster jumped all over my arse, I would think I had left this world.

I have no doubt I started my back ache problems about a month or so ago trying to lift too much weight at my gym ...  I'll be 66 on the 29th of this month so my plan is too move into more of the stretching, yoga, light weights with more repetition type plan.

Seems like over the past few years my list of aches and pains has grown faster than I make Dr. appointments to keep up with..LOL

But recently a new pain in the neck and shoulder have really hit me hard, this is most likely due to a build up of arthritis and a bit of fusion of the vertebrae from an accident many years ago.  But I'm starting a PT series of treatment for 6 weeks beginning in mid December to see if that will help any of it before looking at anything more aggressive.

I may have skimmed, but has anyone said getting old sucks  :D

Getting old sucks buddy however we're still kicking :)

I had a neck issue a few weeks back and it had bother me for almost a year. I finally went to my doc and she sent me for xrays.   The conclusion they came to was arithitis on the left side of my neck with a bone spur.  My doc then wrote me an order for physical therapy and man did that do the trick!   Pain free with the neck now days although along with the PT I bought a new pillow, taking Celebrex & Tylenol, and drinking plenty of beer. jk on the beer part ... lol

I'm thinking you will feel much better after your sessions with the physical therapist

thanks for the feedbaack.  It's good to hear the PT worked on the neck.  My Doc seems to think it will definitely help. In the meantime she gave me some muscle relaxers.  Not sure I have any of those to relax anymore!!   But took one last night and it seemed to help right away

The PT will teach you some simple exercises to release the tension and stiffness in your neck. They will also either put you on a machine that stretches your neck vertebrates or do it by hand. Either way feels like you have kicked the bucket and gone to Heaven!
