  1. And now, the time has come. Dare I say, this challenge has been the best one yet. It's feedback from the competitors and fans like this that have really driven the challenge to another level. Thanks to our 5 test subjects and the hundreds of regular followers in the thread. This has been a great season and we thank you for coming along for the ride. Overall Stats: @B.Boston not only steered the ship into the harbor, he did a power slide into his space with style by wrapping up the overall category running away. This was truly a dominating performance by someone who took his game to the absolute next level. Who wouldn't want to cut their handicap in half? He didn't just improve one area of his game to bring down the HC either, this is across-the-board improvement. Very impressive! It's also very fun to look at the group's improvement as everyone experienced gains in multiple aspects of their games. You're each going to be formidable opponents in your next tournament. One of the keys to this challenge's success is total buy in and our guys really delivered with a staggering 95.5 rounds amongst them. There's no such thing as protecting the handicap in this group. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Which brings us to our final standings and podium prizes: We can #cuetheduckboats for @B.Boston and his fan base. For the grand prize, he'll be bringing home a custom Cobra License Plate Trophy PLUS 1 polo, 1 pair of pants or shorts, 1 hat, 1 pair of shoes. @daviddvm produced our best ONE length showing to date with a strong second place and even spent a little bit of time in the lead of our challenge. For his prize, he'll be sporting a PUMA Golf cap, polo and pair of shoes Although he had to withdraw from the competitive piece of the challenge early, @Headhammer managed to do enough throughout his competitive weeks to get himself onto the podium still. It's interesting to think about what would've happened had he not injured his elbow. He can impress his physical therapist with his new PUMA Golf cap and Polo I would be remiss if I didn't also acknowledge @GB13 and @edingc for their gallant efforts and detailed reviews throughout the process. I hope you guys enjoyed the challenge as much as the fans enjoyed heckling you! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - And our last prize of the day....the member of the thread. This one isn't always an easy choice but for CCC4, the decision was clear. We chose someone that participated day in day out, asked tons of questions, spammed the memes, and competed in each weekly challenge. You know him, you love him, (you may be slightly annoyed by him); this year's winner is: @xOldBenKenobiX Congrats! Shoot me a PM to claim your grand prize of a Cobra SPEEDZONE Driver and Arccos for the full set. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - THE END. HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

  6. Best post of the year. Stud giving congrats and throwing darts is what we are here for. Congrats @B.Boston on a much deserved win (cheater). Congrats to the forum regulars who give this place life and keep it moving. I am ashamed that I wasn't here to heckle with and at you guys for the whole season. @GB13, you have failed me for the last time. Lastly, congrats to @xOldBenKenobiX. It takes a lot of time and dedication to win the forum member award in this thread---well deserved. Enjoy the spoils and let us know if the new new is good enough to find a semi-permanent home in your bag.

  7. Okay.... It’s our 36th anniversary today. My wife made a wonderful dinner for us. She told me to go ahead and take pictures while she grilled the steak. So I did. Here’s my set 4-GW made to my specs. Thanks Ed and the Wilson crew. Very impressive that you over nighted these to us and also signed your name as having inspected them. If I understand the Wilson site properly there is no additional charge for customization other than certain shaft or grip options. Please note that there are plenty of no up charge choices in both graphite and steel. As has been noted by others the GW does not have Power Holes like the other irons. As a reminder I’m an older single digit handicap., 4.4 right now soon to be 64 years young, golfer who has lost some swing speed, low to mid 90’s SS with driver. According to ARCCOS my weakest link would be my approach shots and particularly 9 iron and PW. A players distance iron would seem ideal for me. In this test I intend to compare this iron with my current gamer, the Ping G30, as well as the regular D7 that I was considering moving to before being selected for this test. You can see here the contrast of sole sizes between the 7 irons. I’m anxious to game an iron that has a better optic between my shortest set iron and SCOR wedges. Additionally I’d like to see if I’m able to hit 4 iron. :) In my bag for this test I’m going with Ping G410 plus driver, 5w, 7w, Wilson’s D7 forged 4-GW, SCOR 52,60 and EVNRoll E5 putter. We got dinged by Sally this weekend. It’s rained every day since Saturday so many courses and ranges are closed. Right now Friday is looking to be my first range session with a round scheduled for Sunday afternoon. I’m excited to get these sticks out, kick the tires, check the acceleration and all that other stuff. Let me know if you have any questions or something in particular that you’d like me to test. 9. So my 4:00 call from the car turned into a 4:30 I had to lead from my home office. I get to the course, grab a ticket for a bucket of balls and key my PIN into the machine. The assistant pro leading my daughter's junior class just laughed and told me to go out and play a few holes while she had the kids. So off I went. So with no range balls, no warm-up, no stretching, I'm standing on the 10th tee. 180 yard par 3, about 165 to the front edge. I pull 8 iron (my 165 club - you don't want to be long here) and proceed to top it. No problem, I haven't even swung these things before, I'll just grab another one... and top that one. So a little bit of fear sets in, but undeterred, I drop a third ball and actually find the clubface. But I came up about 10 yards short. I hit a fourth, and the same thing. The last two shots felt good and looked good in the air. So maybe these clubs are a little shorter than the Cobras? Yes, that was a chip-in "birdie" with the no-holes gap wedge. Figuring that these clubs are a little shorter, I hit 4 iron instead of my usual 5 off the 11th tee. With the Cobras, if I hit 4 and turn it over the least little bit, I run out of room and I'm in jail. I hit two 4 irons here, turned them both over, and I was in good shape. From where I was off the tee I'd normally hit a sand wedge in, but I figured I'd try the D7 gap wedge, and it turned out great. 20 feet beyond the hole. I didn't hit a horrible shot on 12, just pushed it a bit and missed the green right. Nice and high for a 6i; much higher than the Cobras. And boy these things are feeling so smooth. Incredible feedback on well-struck shots. I hit a nice 4i off the tee on 13 and then absolutely flagged a little 9i with the ball about 4 inches above my feet. That 9i shot was downhill and would usually be a wedge, but so what. I like three-footers more than I like 145 yard wedge shots. I skipped 14 and 15 to save some time and headed to the 16th. The 4i off the tee was a little off the toe; it didn't feel great but it was certainly useable. It plays downhill, so that actually wasn't as good a shot as the one on 13. The 7i with the ball a few inches below my feet and coming out of the rough was a wonderful shot. It actually landed right next to the hole but rolled out about 20 feet to the fringe. I decided to chip instead of putting and chipped it to about 2 feet. This hole is only 420, so don't think of it as a birdie, but it's a good par. I wonder what happens when you really catch one off the toe. I found out on 17. It's awful. I thought I broke my hand, even with the graphite shafts. And it went nowhere. But, it didn't hook quite as much as the F8 would have, so it was still playable. With the ball above my feet and a slightly uphill lie to an elevated green, I really thought I'd need one more club. But I didn't. I didn't miss by more than about 6 feet, but I was in the back bunker. The 5i redeemed itself off the 18th tee leaving me in a great spot, but a little too close to hit one of the D7s. So I just hit lob wedge, took my two putts, grabbed my daughter and headed out. I'll be interested to get more data into Arccos to see what my yardages look like. This isn't nearly enough data to draw any conclusions, but it does look like I'm about a club shorter with the D7's. However, if I can hit as many good iron shots day in and day out as I did tonight, I don't know that I'm too worried about losing a club of distance.

  10. Okay I came in second I'm gonna say I won the silver medal of #COBRACONNECT4 #TeamCobraONE #Teamonelength Seriously I'm very proud of my performance and I feel fortunate and honored to have been chosen to compete in #COBRACONNECT4, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!! We are ALL winners here at MGS because this is the greatest golf website on the planet! Nowhere else do you get such opportunity to educate yourself and interact with so many golf enthusiasts as we have here and the icing on the cake is being chosen to test golf equipment and review the product to our piers. This has been so much fun and my game has never been in better shape. I achieved a goal that I was not sure I would achieve...single digit handicap! The Cobra SpeedZoneONE clubs have taken me to a new level of performance. Here are baseline numbers coming in with 70 rounds tracked by Arccos Caddie. And now after 8 weeks and 16 rounds with SpeedZoneONE clubs. I had wanted to try the one length concept since watch the chronicling of Bryson Dechambeau as he burst on to the PGA scene at the Masters Tourney a few years ago. Now I have had my chance and I feel I have made the most of it and I hopefully will continue to improve with the added consistency and ease of setup offered by SpeedZoneONE length clubs. The concept just makes sense to me and I think embracing the one length clubs may be the difference in my success compared to previous one length competitors. I don't see myself using anything other than ONE length irons going forward...they just give me confidence and repeatability that I have never enjoyed before. Of the Cobra clubs in my bag the only club that could lose it's place is the SpeedZone driver...but I want to put the shaft in it that I was fit for first to give it every chance. ( I was fit for Tensei Blue stiff and received a regular. ) I love the 5 wood that dude is sweet! Thanks to everyone who has contributed to these weeks and months of craziness...too many to name. Especially those who supported me Thanks to to my competitors @Headhammer, @GB13, @edingc, and our CHAMPION @B.Boston !!!!!!!!! We are now part of the CobraConnect Challenge Family!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable job done on this #COBRACONNECT4 by the man the myth...GolfSpy STUDque Thanks Cobra for putting up the goods to make this possible year after year. And everyone at MyGolfSpy My Home For Golf!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Tuesdays are my busy days, but I couldn't resist. Ran out to a local lighted driving range to work up and down the set. Decided not to shoot any video (poor lighting, range balls, off a mat...) but thought you might at least want a hot-take, even if it comes with more than a couple grains of salt: These feel really, really solid. I would describe a typical range ball feel as "hollow,." You can just tell there's nothing going on in there. Not unlike me, some days. But these D7s upgraded the range ball feel to "crunchy." (Hey, it's still a range ball.) Speaking of feel, I was a little concerned coming into this test that I would be giving up feel. That sounds strange for a forged iron, I know, but between the 'power holes' and the 'power chamber,' I was worried that I wouldn't be able to place the ball at contact (i.e. low-toe strike, mid-heel strike, etc) and every shot would just kind of feel the same. That is not the case at all and in the best way. I got the right amount of feedback to know how to adjust but with minimal visible difference to ball flight. With the shorter irons, it seemed I couldn't miss. The D7 4i (my favorite in my Ping set) was an absolute monster and the 3i was much easier to find the center of the face compared to my Ping. These irons are a touch flatter than my Pings (standard vs 0.5 degree upright) and right away I noticed just the softest of butter cuts with my standard swing. Spent some time working shots both ways then high/low and really didn't have any issues, though it's difficult to judge just how workable Ball flight is noticeably lower and more penetrating and if that holds, that's immediately going to make these real contenders to stay in my bag permanently I feel silly talking about turf interaction while hitting off a mat, but I could definitely feel the bottom of the club. We'll see how that translates to grass. As a fun aside, I had three different people stop and watch me hit a couple shots and one audible, "wow." So that feels pretty good. Playing 9 tomorrow evening and again Thursday AM before work. Will report back before I head into my usual weekend routine (18 Friday, 18 Saturday, 9 Sunday, lay on a heating pad Sunday afternoon) By next week, I'll have enough Arccos data to post some preliminary numbers.

  20. I'll be going to the range this afternoon (I was going to go yesterday but I had to go and fix a plumbing issue for a very useless friend of mine) to give these clubs their first test drive. I'm taking my 4, 6 and PW Bridgestones to try and compare as well as take a few comparison photos. Stay tuned. BTW, I think you guys will like the Recoils. I've been playing them for about 4 years and really, really like them a lot. However, because I LOVE my Even Flow wood shafts, I went with the Project X Catalyst because they look to be the iron version of the Even Flows.

  22. WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS.... We had the championship match tonight. My opponent and I were next to each other on the range hitting bombs with beautiful flight. As is usually the case, we both stunk it up a bit on the course. We ended up tied on strokes (both +2 over our HC's) and we were close on holes, but I think I beat him. My partner handily beat his opponent. Overall, it was a great season. My partner has been playing in leagues a long time and figured something out - he dropped his handicap 5 strokes this season so will be bumped to A flight next year. I managed to drop mine 2 strokes, which I'll take. Tonight I started par, par, bogey and finished par, bogey so I was +7 on the other holes with 3 penalties. According to Arccos, chipping was the best part of my game. Go figure, after having the yips this weekend. Getting back to the basics and trying @Tsmithjr9's tip helped greatly. I even chipped one in.

  23. FYI, I am playing the Recoil shafts and happy w them. As an older golfer (almost 74) w some arthritis in my hands the Recoils seem to help. Obviously I don’t have the stiff/heavier shafts that you young guys are using. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  24. Went to the range today to sort out my swing from Sunday. There has been a permanent change in the bag. The T100S will be in there without any competition for a while. I brought the Taylormades to compare the two clubs, after a few yucky feeling swings with the old clubs... they are benched until further notice... probably for ever. Working on some pictures, and some more detailed thoughts for these, but I will say that Titleist hit a home run with these clubs. Now, I just have to decide if I am going with a set 48°, or a Vokey 48°... the 3 iron will most likely live at home unless I take a trip to Scotland.

  25. So the Recoils... If I could have ordered them with any shaft I would have stuck to the nippon modus 105 that I really like. But that shaft was on the Upcharge list. But for the 7 club set the recoils were a free shaft (they are a $450 Upcharge of you get the 8 club set... Wilson, you might want to look into that). I picked the 110g F4 flex shafts. I'll get some launch monitor numbers to check everything, but from first day on the course, I forgot all about them being graphite. They felt great and did exactly what I was expecting. As I sit here, I'm very glad I didn't get the nippon's.

  26. After watching the UPS truck drive circles around my house for 4 hours yesterday my new set of Wilson D7 Forged irons arrived! Sadly, they didn't get in until the rain came and the light faded. But it gave me time to inspect them and get ShotScope tags installed and ready for today.

I know I ragged on the five-way top of the SpeedZone x Vessel bag, but I've found the ultimate range/practice bag. The larger openings on the top allow me to fit everything I like to take to the range inside the bag. I can hold my tripod, shag tube, alignment sticks and still have room for 5-6 clubs. I almost never take a full set to the range, so this is awesome! And the somewhat limited storage compartments are plenty for my Mevo, foot powder spray and various odds and ends. I had a pencil style practice bag but it couldn't hold much, had no useful pockets and no carrying strap.

  38. I posted here about how badly I played last week, culminating with a horrible round on Saturday after thinking I had worked things out on the range. I got a lot of encouragement from people here, but what really helped were comments from @Kenny B and @silver & black. S&B talked about how he stopped focusing on score so much, and trying to forget a bad shot after it happened instead of letting that linger. When I read that, I thought it would be difficult for me, because I rarely play a casual round. I'm always playing in either a league or money game, so score matters. I decided to clear my head and not touch a club from Saturday until yesterday mornings tee time. I didn't even take an air swing. What I did do was try to imagine myself taking a swing with a smoother tempo, instead of trying to "crush" every shot. Yesterday turned out to be a dream pairing. We were playing two man best ball, and my partner had to cancel at the last minute, which meant I wouldn't know who my teammate was until they did a blind draw after we were done. That took a lot of pressure to perform off of me, as did the fact the team I played with were two really nice guys. One is a good friend who plays to a 11, and the other was just the type of player I needed to be with after all my whining last week. He was once an excellent player, a few strokes above scratch. He suffers from a disease now that causes his hands to shake very badly. It's sad to watch him hit a ball so poorly, and even more heart breaking to watch him try to steady them and try to putt. He barely breaks a 100 now, yet never complains. He's a perfect gentleman who carries himself like he's still the player he was, and he's always encouraging to others. I hit the ball really well yesterday, my irons were so much better. The putter was cold at the beginning, and I had a few 3 putts on the opening nine. That evened out though, as I later made a few long ones I wasn't expecting. It was a good day. Same course I blew up on Saturday, I shot a 43-41/84 yesterday. Bottom line? I need to learn I'm not a Tour Pro, lol. I'm going to play badly at times. Stop beating myself up when I do. It's not the end of the world.

  40. Thanks - I'm anxious to see that too - I've tended to miss stuff left with the regular D7's. The dispersion patterns are tight with them but they are left of target for sure. I'm very hopeful that less offset will bring that dispersion pattern closer to center. The lofts are also a bit weaker head to head with the D7 forged. Strong compared to a player's club but weak compared to a modern GI or Super GI (if that category really exists anymore.) The lofts are quite similar to the G30's actually and I love the way I launch those. I just hate the way they look and I have very little ability to flight the ball down with them.

  47. Yea, that's really odd . Good to hear that your initial opinion is that they perform like steel. That is what many are saying about them. I'll be interested in whether you notice any reduction in hand/wrist/shoulder fatigue playing them. I've been eyeballing @chisag's Cobra Tour Forged set that have the Recoils. I think they are too much into the players category for me but they might be a great experiment set to see if I can handle a players category club and how composite shafts feel - I have never played any. But, with winter in AZ just around the corner and my plans to do a True Spec full bag fitting in Scottsdale, I've chosen to hold off and see what that yields. I am going to check with True Spec and see if they have the new Wilson D7 forged among the multitude of options - these irons really interest me. Edit: Just checked TrueSpec website... no Wilson .

    How'd you play?

Played early 9 Monday & today and once again Cart Path Only. Yesterday not too bad in the slop, lost a ball mid fareway to “casual pond”. This morning not good. The slop for last week plus took its toll and I lost interest. Canceled golf for Wednesday & Friday and will play Monday if courses dry out somewhat. Hearing a splash/spat on my shots is discouraging. Lawn/flowers/shrubs sure is growing like crazy[emoji16] Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy
