    How'd you play?

My brother found a deal on a tee time at Pilgrim's Run (North of Grand Rapids, MI), which neither of us had played before. We went with the men's forward tees because it was our first time, and boy was it a treat. Unfortunately my phone had no service, so my typical course GPS app didn't work. There were quite a few blind shots that would have been nice to have some more confidence on aiming and distances, but it was a beautiful day on a beautiful course. As long as it doesn't get too cold, I'm not sure if a fall day of Michigan golf can be topped.

    How'd you play?

Temp cooled off today, but 45º at tee time, sunny and no wind was really quite nice. It warmed up to 58º by the time we finished. My wife and I were paired with a young single with a ride-along wife. He took up golf 3 months ago; has good eye-hand coordination but his recent baseball playing days were telling. Hard swinger. Poor contact. Must have lost a dozen PV1x balls. He thought that since he was a good athlete, he should be able to pick up the game fairly easily. Sounded a lot like me 30 years ago!! I birdied #2 with a 10-footer, and made the turn at +2 (39). I had a sand save par on the par 3 #12 with my ball up near the lip of the bunker, then another 10-foot birdie on the Par 5 #13. I had a few bogeys coming in, but finished with a +4 (39) on the back nine for a round of 78. The guy we played with struggled off the tee, and maybe my wife and I were part of the problem. My wife drove the ball well all day and also shot 39 on the back nine. On hole #16 I hit a "just OK" tee shot with my driver to the middle of the fairway. He said, "You haven't missed a fairway all day." I said thank you; boring golf I know!! But I had to remind him that I pulled my tee shot on #1 to the left rough... my only missed fairway of the day actually. Fairways hit: 12/13. I also had one of my better days hitting greens. GIR: 10/18. However, other than the two birdie putts, my putting was off today. One of these days I'll get everything working at the same time!!

  9. Third good round in a row on Saturday... played the Dye Course at Barefoot which, although difficult, is my favorite of our 4 courses Cold start to the day, but I played really well on the front, shooting a 40. one 3 putt bogey because I ran my birdie putt too far by trying to help my team with a birdie/net eagle when we already had a par in the bank. Cooled off a bit with a 44 on the back but I'll take an 84 any day on this course when the wind is gusting the way it was. My team won the front, and I got CTP. We finished -8 in a 3 man use one low net score game. Our A player really struggled but our C player shot an 88 (from the greens) to make up for him. We lost the back and got nipped in the total to a team that went out -1, -9 in for -10. They were unconscious on the back, lol. Fun day with a nice group of guys...

Sad to see that Sean Connery passed away last night. One of my favorite actors from James Bond, to Indiana Jones... Age 90 It is obvious what his golf brand of choice was.

    Whats your best joke?

A man owned a small ranch near Great Falls, Montana. The Montana Labor Department got a tip that he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an investigator out to interview him. "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the investigator. "Well," replied the rancher, "there's my ranch hand who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1200 a week plus free room and board." "The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $1000 per week plus free room and board." "Then there's the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day, with no days off, and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week and pays his own room and board." "But, I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night, and he also sleeps with my wife occasionally." "That's the guy I want to talk to... the half-wit," says the investigator. "You're talking to him," replied the rancher.

  18. So I previously posted that it never happened to me. So this morning I pull into the golf club parking lot and there is a foresome loading up. I get out of my car, put my shoes on, grab my clubs and head over toward the pro shop. One guy take off in his cart flies over to the first tee and tees it up. The rest of the group are still in the parking lot. I hit two warm up balls on the range. (Which is right next to the first tee). I look over and the guy is still standing there protecting his spot. I just laughed, got in my cart and teed off on three. I finished up on 18 then played 1 and 2. Finished up and their group was just coming off of 9 heading toward the 10th tee. Keep in mind that the course is empty. Five cars in the parking lot at 9:30 am. Was it really that important to want to get out ahead of a single?

  19. I’ve yet to figure out the direction thing- i always have my grid in the parking lot or 1st green. :) Other than that I absolutely love mine very easy to use and accurate. I’ve discovered that I drive the ball farthest, when I launch it between 15-17 and with practice I’ve gotten a real good sense of how to do that. I played with my regular guys yesterday and they were stunned by how high I was hitting and and how far it was going both into and down wind. In fact I was longer than a guy whom I’m neck and neck with on every drive and he several in the same zip code as my younger buddy who’s generally 30 yards longer than me. 2020 Classic Bag Challenge

Excellent news, Stu. I've had a couple things happen at work recently that had me briefly thinking about retirement. It's not yet realistic, but for a moment, thinking about playing golf four or more days a week sure sounded good. It's still a pipe dream, though, so I'll have to live vicariously thru your retirement golf.

  21. Yep I had went back to them when John Smalls came down a couple of weeks ago and played golf with me. Got a heck of a deal on my 2021 Course Membership yesterday so I reupped. Year long $20 for 18 and a cart and $10 for 9 and a cart. Since DST has started I will play during the week in the afternoons. It is darn near impossible to get on in the mornings due to the several leagues that play there. Right now I am still not able to walk the Stu 5 in the early mornings. I think I have Therapy and the Docs out of the way. No excuse at the money rate not to get out for 9 every afternoon as long as the weather holds out. Fall here is my favorite time to get out in the late afternoon rounds.

  25. "The failure of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was especially frustrating for Connery, who sensed during shooting that the production was "going off the rails" announced that the director, Stephen Norrington should be "locked up for insanity", and spent considerable effort in trying to salvage the film through the editing process, ultimately deciding to retire from acting rather than go through such stress ever again." "Connery claimed that the production of the film and the film's final quality caused his decision to permanently retire from filmmaking, saying in an interview with The Times, “It was a nightmare. The experience had a great influence on me, it made me think about showbiz. I get fed up dealing with idiots.”" Sent from my Pixel 2 using MyGolfSpy mobile app

    How'd you play?

Shot a dastardly mid 90's today. Probably a function of too many lost balls in the leaves, cart path only and cold windy weather. On the other hand I was very pleased with my short game - 75 yards in. That short game, including my putting saved me. Can't wait to get to Florida for some decent temps. How'd you play?

Well, I had a 40/43:83 today at Pebble Creek. I made a 15’ putt for birdie on the par 3 #15. I also had 5 Doubles today, one on the front with s penalty and four on the back nine. If I had not screwed up on the back I would had a very good day. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

Have you tried using an alignment stick/club? Try taking your stance/set-up, with your club face to the target line you think is correct. Then without moving your feet, position the alignment stick off the shoe tips and see if it matches. Another trick/tip is to find a spot on the ground ~2 to 5 ft between you and the target, while standing facing the target, and align your feet and clubface to that (once again, verify with the alignment stick). Lots of players utilize the "point in between" method to reduce the optical illusion many have issues with trying to align from the set-up stance.

  36. I understand the argument you are making. And others have stated it before. However MGS uses real people for club test with non perfect non reoeateable swings because thats what happens on the course, real people non perfect swings. This is the process vetted through multiple companies as mentioned. Robot testing, again referring to the R&D experts in the industry should be used in ball testing. So last year MGS went to great expense and time and travelled to a company that does not sell balls and spent almost two weeks testing balls on the robot with the process vetted agsin by the experts. The result was the most comprehensive and detailed and completely unbiased ball study ever done. As a result of that study, Callaway flew it’s 3 top executives across the country to discuss this with Adam and Tony. After which, you know doubt have heard about the 50 Million Dollar investment Callaway made in its manufacturing snd QA processes. No company does that because of an study meant for entertainment.

  37. This happened to me a few years ago. I took up another hobby, running, which in turn boosted my golf game. I still have times when I am disinterested in golf, but as I get older (37) I am cherishing every moment whether that is on the golf course, fishing, work, etc. And the little times when I think I don’t like golf anymore, something comes up, I go hit a few balls and I’m back at it. Dont get discouraged with it. Embrace it, could be just giving you a nudge to look at golf from a different perspective.

i’m bringing alignment up at my next lesson. last round i played i took a few practice swings, stepped back to visualize my shot, and the grass i brushed with the club was pointed a solid 50 yards left. a few holes later, 30 yards right. i always think i’m lined up exactly where i want the ball to go i can’t tell you how many well struck iron shots have been way off line lately. good swing, great contact, pin high...40 yards off line.

I don't really know what I do. I think I'm aimed correctly but I seem to pull the ball left when I think I'm good. If I compensate, I usually go right. There doesn't seem to be a "just right" alignment for me.
