  5. Good Morning Spies, It's a beautiful sunny sky here in NW Pennsylvania. Haven't made any plans yet as wasn't sure on Hubby's ticker. Still in rhythm!! So I guess I need to put something together for the weekend. Probably means a trip for supplies for what ever that looks like. The pool opened today at our club so maybe take the grandsons for a swim sometime this weekend. Have a safe Memorial Day weekend. Don't forget to think of our veterans and service members! They are why we live like we do! I'm greatful to all our Service Spies (current and past)!

  6. Good morning Spies! Happy Memorial Day weekend, especially to those who have served and are currently actively serving. My family and I are very grateful for the sacrifices you make to provide us the life we live. Got myself and my uncle signed up yesterday for my clubs member guest invitational, which is a 54 hole event the weekend of July 8th and 9th. It also includes a whiskey and cigar bar, steak dinner and two brunches, tee gifts, raffle prizes, etc. I am really looking forward to it and my uncle plays to a 7 handicap, so we should have a chance to do pretty well as our group handicap will be higher because of my 26.3 .

  7. Good morning, spies! One year ago today, I played my first round after taking a decade off. Playing today with a buddy on the same course I played a year ago. Weather is really nice and I am excited to get out there and play. Although I’m still trying to get to a place where I have predictable and sound mechanics, I am encouraged with how far I’ve come in the past year. This community has been a great help, so thank you. Enjoy the day!

    How'd you play?

Just got home from my work trip and golf outing. Played well today. Tied for second and won in the score card review. Here is the kicker. They paid 1st and 10th place only. What kind of crap is that. So I then drove 5-1/2 hours home thinking about that one stroke that would have tied for first place. It was a fun day and the course was in good condition. Good weather, good company and good golf. What else can you ask for?

    How'd you play?

Had a break through round on Thursday afternoon. Starting with a par on #1 and then three not so great holes, pars were had on 5-8. It’s the first time that I have been able to put four pars together and I was in a touch of shock. Bogeyed the par 5 9th and that’s where I realized that I was sitting at a +5 41. Previous best on 9 holes was 44. Only planned on playing 9 but I decided to try to keep my good luck going so onto the tenth tee I went. #10 saw me reach a new PR for driver with a 299yd tee shot. It had a little bit of help with a downhill after landing and dry fairways but I was still stoked. Finished that off with a par. Tried to keep things under control through #13 but I ended up with a couple of doubles in there. Kept those thoughts out of my head and headed to #14. Flat par four dogleg left that I decided to attack the corner since the driver was working well. Tee shot was straight and long, cleared the trees on the inside and landed in the fairway with another new PR of 316yds. . Poor approach shot (I think I may have been in shock again), then a chip and two putts for a bogey. #15 was a straightforward par but that was seven pars so far which is also a PR for me. Sitting at 11 over heading to 16 and I was telling myself that I really shouldn’t mess this up but, try to get that focus in check and just worry about the hole in front of me. Downhill par 3 playing 173 yds with a slight breeze from left to right and pin front, right. Good ball strike and the ball was on the green with eight feet to the hole. I’m not in position for a lot of birdies but I was hopeful here and it worked out. That put me at +10 with two to go and I started to relax a little as things set in. Might have relaxed a bit too much and had bogeys on 17 and 18 which left me at a +12 84 which is my first time breaking 90. No way would I have ever thought that I could shave six shots in one round. I would have been just as happy with an 89. I was definitely floating by this point. So many things went right for me during that round but the biggest part was the mental game. I was able to stay focused on what I was doing and not dwell on a bad shot or a bad hole. I kept telling myself that it’s just golf but, I felt that I had definitely accomplished something. The three doubles were still avoidable but the seven pars and a birdie outweighed them by a long shot. So new long drive, four consecutive pars and a total of seven pars, broke 90 for the first time, and new low score. Definitely glad that I played 18 holes.

  14. Top of the pot spies . Today will be round #4 for the week. While my back muscle still gets a little sore, it's so much better than the past few months. I've been staying diligent in daily core exercises and 3-4x/week workouts. My scorecards are once again seeing a healthy dose of "F" & "G" annotations and the index which had spiked, is trending down to where it was before that tee shot on Cimmaron #3 in January . Sounds like weather across spy nation is looking good for golf and lots of folks are getting out for play . Enjoy your weekend and get those damn birdie putts to or past the hole .

  16. Good morning everyone! I hope your weekend is starting out wonderfully. I'm settling in with a hot cup of coffee waiting on two dogs to get comfortable on the couch. They have to position themselves into the perfect spot or they will continue the search for it until they find it. It's the start of summer shutdown and a great time to rejuvenate the body and spirit until my long Labor Day weekend. It's also Memorial Day weekend and I want to say thank you to all the service members both past and present for all you have done for our country.

  17. It's going to happen, I was thinking about tomorrow evening or Sunday after I didn't go today. Tomorrow might be a wash as far as playing, the wife has plans for me to do some grilling. I have an 8:20 tee time (Central Time) on Tuesday at Fall Creek Falls golf course in Pikeville, TN with some friends at work. Should be a fun round as I have never played there. Lots of bunkers around the greens, the Snakebite wedges may be getting a workout. I'm super excited about that round, it's all me and my work buddies have been talking about since Tuesday.

  19. Thank you! I counted up how many balls I have in my bag and right now it's 22, hopefully that'll be enough. I got on Google Earth and saw the fairways are a whopping 35 yards wide, so keeping them out of the trees is important. The good thing is, I don't see much water. It'll be fun, I enjoy the guys I'm playing with and there will be a lot of smack talk and laughs.

SWMBO has a physical yesterday and things look pretty good, still has one issue that they seem to have under control. Has to in for a “tune up” every 3 months. No golf until Monday but will post Bacon Boyz Friday on “How did you play later”.

  21. Good morning Spies on day 1 of the 3 day Memorial Day weekend. Similar weather here in Michigan as Derek has in NY. Plans for me today are to finish up some things around the house and then have time for my planned rounds on Sunday and Monday. Jason, have a great time today, and looking forward to some pictures later of you and the Cobra clubs. To all the rest, have a great day, no matter what you may do, or where you may be, make it the best it possibly can be!

  23. As mentioned in the "How'd You Play" thread, I got out today for 9 holes at Flagstone and played the back nine. I shot 53, hitting one fairway and zero greens. I also had 18 putts which was pretty impressive considering I had some long ones. I went to the course and was initially going to practice and thought there was no way I was going to get on since they were hosting a tournament for Vietnam veterans. I picked up a large bucket and headed to the range. After finishing, there was literally two groups out on the course. I went in, paid for my round, and off we went. Anyone who has know me on here for any amount of time knows I hate the 10th at Flagstone (formerly Chatata Valley), I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. The miss is right and I teed up 5 wood and ripped it right. I'm thinking it caught the slope because I ended up just to the left of the cart path, 107 from the green. If I use the scorecard yardage, that was a 230 yard 5 wood. Hit PW left of the hole, chipped to 15 feet and two putted for bogey. Also want to mention hole 15, it's a dogleg left with trees guarding against cutting the corner. I hit a great drive just right of the trees and landed in what I will call a "junker", a junk bunker. Had 154 uphill left to the pin and centered a 6 iron. Landed short of the green left, chipped up and 3 putted. I left the putt way short, which is on me. Overall, everything in the bag performed well. I didn't hit a lot of fairways, but the driver was solid. I love the sound it make when I get it close to the center. I did lose 3 balls, one was a smoked pull, one I just topped left into some high grass, and one was a banana slice on 18. Fairways and hybrids were awesome! After losing my drive on 18, I hit a provisional that I tried to hit too hard and topped about 120. Hit a nice 3 wood leaving 190 into the green. Hit 5 wood just a little slice, but solid enough to leave me pin high right. Got up and down for the bogey. My irons performed great, it's amazing at the distance gain I'm seeing. I know they're aggressively lofted, but wow! When I can remember my swing thoughts which are "twist and turn" I am hitting some really good shots. Wedges and putter need just a little tweak from me to dial in distances, but were solid performers. Overall, early indicators are leaning toward me playing better golf with the Cobra's. Shot 49 the other day and 53 today for a total of 102 after two rounds.

    How'd you play?

Had a very interesting round today. I struggled (to put it nicely) on the front nine and shot a 50 with no three putts. I made par on 8 and 9 and was feeling like I turned a corner. My approach on 9 was great: Unfortunately I missed that short birdie (and yes, these greens are in really bad shape). The back nine was a totally different round. I shot a 41, and that was with three (!) three-putts. Two of those three putts saved par, including the shot of the day where I drove the green on a short (340) par 4: I hit the ball great, but also got a heck of a bounce to push it up to the green. I’m hoping to break 90 this year. This is the second time I shot 91 in three weeks, so I’m very optimistic.

    The Good Morning Thread

Memorial Day in the US is Monday. Please remember to be careful how you interact with Veterans and families of Veterans on this weekend and whenever the focus is on the Nation's Fallen and their families. Any reference to a Gold Star family is national recognition of a family who lost one of their own in military service. Memorial Day is to remember the service of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms of all Americans. For those of us who have combat experience it is a day we remember those we served with who did not come home to family alive. I had a well meaning acquaintance say "Congratulations!" at a Memorial Day parade as we were gathering to organize our Boy Scout Troop for marching. It confused me and caused internal anger because it was the wrong thing to say. I had been a senior staff officer in a task force headquarters during the Iraq war and in the 5 months in that position took every opportunity to serve on Ramp Detail. Ramp Detail happens between midnight and 3 AM on the airfield apron. Participants are all volunteers to pay Honors and Respects as casket draped with flag is moved to an aircraft and carried inside to begin the final trip home for the fallen in the casket. Participants then go into the aircraft and assemble around the casket along with the air crew and a Chaplain says a brief prayer service. The moment it is complete, the airplane engines start, everyone not leaving departs the rear drop ramp, a pallet of gear is loaded and secured to the ramp as it lifts, and the aircraft buttons up as it turns onto the runway and is airborne before participants have time to walk off the apron back to duty. I served on Ramp Detail for 20 of our fallen Task Force warriors. The stories for a few I heard, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time tragedies. There is no happy for me on a Memorial Day but there is peace. The best wish for anyone in service on Memorial Day weekend and Memorial Day itself is, "Have a peaceful Memorial Day." The friend's good intentions essentially congratulated me for living. Those of us who come back when others didn't have some form of survivor guilt and Memorial Day is not for us, our day of recognition for our service is Veterans Day in November. This is also a splendid thing to say Barb, To serve is an honor and privilege. God bless all our Veteran warriors past, present and future, God bless all of the fallen military people who sacrificed themselves from every nation for all time, and God bless America

  26. Me! Me! Me! I played a run round with @StrokerAce this morning… or we’ll it was more me watching Jason play golf, and I was, we’ll I’m not sure I’d call it golf. However, when I did manage to hit a good shot it was with the Edel irons or a wedge. I nearly holed this 165 yard par 3 with my 7 iron. Landed short and rolled past the cup. Later on I hit a great approach with my 9 iron from 130 in the rough. Landed and stuck right there. Also had some other good shots, but my swing just wasn’t there and I was awful off the tee. It’s a hard way to play! But I still enjoyed my time out there and am really liking what I see from the SMS Pros!

  32. Ugh. You had to mention a BeCu Anser 2 and ruin my night! About 10 years ago I’m playing our Norman course. I hit a wedge onto the green to about 3’. I pulled the birdie putt to the right and threw mine as hard as I could. As I’m in the throwing motion I realized that water runs up the entire right side of the hole, and it was only about 10 yards from where I was. It almost felt like I was reaching out to grab the putter as it left my hand, soaring high and far looking like a helicopter blade until it finally landed about 25 yards out into the middle of the pond. My gamer was a Yes! Tracy but I cherished that mint condition Ping because I knew what a classic it was, and then on one of the rare times I took it out from display bag I kept it in with a full set of BeCu Eye 2’s, I threw it in a pond because I’m a (not the word I want to use here…) freaking idiot!

Common courtesies are falling by the wayside, even on the golf course. I can’t imagine any of my playing partners ever doing that, nor any of those that I’ve randomly been paired with, but I live and play at a private club. I have seen guests play here that have done some questionable and disrespectful things. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m not going to tolerate many things and I probably would have said something sarcastic to him.

6 over through the first 5 holes. Ugh. Rallied back to play even for the rest of the round, with a net result of a 77. Im a bit a of a stumbler after I hit the ball, poor balance (altho not as bad as Berg I think). So the back side I really focused on holding my finish, and Its now going to be my entire focus moving forward. Man I hit some good shots. Funny how that works eh?

    How'd you play?

... I remember knocking on the door of shooting in the 60's and just couldn't get over the hump. As much as I take things one shot at a time that bench mark was hard to ignore and always made me nervous when I got close. I was sitting on a 69 after a good drive on the 17th and pumped with adrenaline, flew a PW a good 15yds farther than normal that nestled down in the deep rough over the green and couldn't help but think "here I go again". Tried to nestle it close to save par with an open face and a difficult flop I only needed to carry about 6 feet but had to get it out of the deep rough. To my surprise and delight, it went in. Par'ed 18 and carded a 68. It was like the dam broke and I was no longer nervous, relishing getting close with a few holes to play instead of being nervous. ... To be mentally comfortable outside your comfort zone, you have to deal with that Catch 22 and get there first. And as Jim said, "you crushed it" so that mental barrier no longer exits.

I went back to bed after the last post and slept to 9:00. We got up and had a hearty breakfast of sausage gravy and biscuits. It is sorta damp not really cold since we live 1/2 mile off the ocean as the crow flies plus we have a lake about 100 yards from the house. Yep it gets damp and a little wet chill so I fired off the wood stove with a small fire to take the damp chill off. Put on a second pot of coffee. Kinda adds to the ambience and coziness of the day. The Frenchie and my wife are curled up in her big recliner cuddled up and asleep. I may take another nap myself

  39. We are so similar in that regard. I mean, I want to see how the Snakebite wedges work out of the bunker, but don't want to see how scoring will go out of there. I can always take a trip to Bear Trace and play around in the practice bunker there and avoid them Tuesday.

  41. Good morning MGSpies on this weekend that marks the "official start of Summer" in WNY that runs through to Labor Day weekend. Brilliant sunshine already in the low 40s that is forecast to high 70s going up to the 80s through to next weekend. Hot coffee keeping the calm going while getting the enthusiasm engaged to get mulch from HD for in in-laws gardens and our own. Thankful for comments in Random Thread for yesterday's round "atrocity" of the random player who made my threesome into a foursome, on the 4th green approach, pulled my 6 iron from my bag to talk about it while I was chipping on with my 9 and later I discovered he had put it back where the 9 goes so pulling what I thought was the 6 for the par-3 6th hole, the cleanly hit shot splashed the sand bunker short of the elevated green, and my disappointment in my club became an internal outrage that the creep had caused the switched clubs and I chose to let the creep act that way alone. I can read numbers and letters as easily forwards as backwards, upside down, and inverse so 9 and 6 are easily missed. I believe someone doing something similar will not evoke unpleasantness from me because golf is my peaceful place and I refuse to let anything disturb my serenity. I will never however extend anything more than a social greeting as 9 holes of association exceeded my tolerance. Hope your day and those in it are agreeable and pleasant and hope golf is a part of your day

  42. Well no golf for us today. Raining in Biblical Proportions with wind gusts of 45 MPH. It actually started Thursday late. Yesterday was on and off showers. The big stuff got here about 3 AM or so this morning. It is pounding right now. I know the small money Friday game was called off. My course sent out the member texts last night saying the Shootout for Saturday and some kind of Ladies event for Sunday afternoon had cancelled. We will sit in today and as SOP for us ride it out. My wife did all the shopping Thursday as usual so we have plenty of provisions. Supposedly this will blow through Sunday afternoon. I know the Tourism Commission in Dirty Myrtle is already crying about Motel cancellations etc. They are predicting 3 1/2 inches of rain through Sunday afternoon. Yep we will stay in dry and watch the golf later on TV. I make no bones about it for me after the Seniors go off I will watch the LIV. I am not into the political aspect of things and frankly I enjoy those events and seeing Lefty Bubba and HV III play. Just hope it dries out enough by Tuesday to where it is not CPO.

Verdict: Not an over-reaction. At a minimum, he should have brought up the similarity in conversation and asked permission to examine it further. Granted, it does not seem there was any Ill intent on his part, but the consequences of his actions were obviously felt by someone other than himself. I would say your anger is/was justified.

That round was one I'm most proud of since I kept the mental game in check and didn't let a disappointing first hole carry on throughout the round and hopefully it's the start of something good. I've pressured myself too much the last couple of years and have been in the process of recovering from the downward spiral that has been my mental game. I had forgotten this game is supposed to be fun. Thankfully, through friendships here and with some friends at work I'm starting to remember why we play this game. It's not all about the scoring, but the memories we make both on and off the course.
