I've got a house guest.

There a cute, tiny field mouse mocking me in my basement man cave. He pops up, and by the time I get up, he's disappeared. He's done it several times since I've been on line posting on the forum.

I don't want to kill him. Mice are warm blooded mammals who eat with their hands and breast feed their young.  I own four firearms and have never shot and killed a living creature.

(Hopefully not even when I was young and in a place that I didn't want to be, but no more about that.)

My present dog, a Welsh Terrorist, couldn't care less. Live and let live is her motto.

The Beagle that you see as my avatar would have found the thing in thirty seconds and handed it over to me. He didn't like to kill anything either.

All I want to do is catch the damn thing and let him loose outside.

I've done that before.

But if my wife sees him first, he's dead.

We haven't had a mouse in years.  We used to have squirrels, but I don't see many of them much anymore either.  I have found squirrel heads in the lawn.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

get a humane mouse trap, but once caught you need to release it a long way from your property or................in the words of Arnie "he'll be back!"

You have one? Right! There's never just one. Same thing with snakes, alligators, etc. Oh and with two mice you'll shortly have a family - if you though rabbits multiplied quickly just wait.......

I've now caught and released four field mice from my humane traps.

I think they were seeking refuge from the coyotes that have been howling up a storm at night.

Four caught means that I've got a problem.

If I use poison, that won't be humane and I'll have to worry about my dog as well.

I'm such a prick with humans.

Why do I like animals so much?

I'm heartbroken.

The mice have caught on to the humane catch and release traps.

I did my very best not to hurt them, but now I'm forced to turn to an exterminator.

My idiot dog can bark at them but not catch them.

Fidel (my avatar) wasn't fast, but he would have known how to ambush them.

When we lived on the shore, he used to catch field mice out on the dunes,

but then he carried them to the walking path and let them go.

I'm glad that I don't believe in hell,

because that's where I might very well be going  because of this.

When we lived in Connecticut every Fall the field mice from the farm in back of our house decided they liked to move in. I had mouse traps set at the “important areas” that we learned over the years. Yes we despatched them quickly.

Same here. They get dispatched to mouse heaven quickly while having a last meal of peanut butter served on a mouse trap.

Yup, peanut butter works the best.

I used both peanut butter and shredded mozzarella in the humane traps and they worked for a while.

Then the little guys smartened up.  Might be the same ones that I released.

I genuinely hate killing furry little creatures, but my wife is not a happy hostess to them.

Keeping with our Sicilian family tradition, though, I'll contract out the hit.

I don't have the stomach for wet work at my age.

No big deal, just throw the trap (with the recently deceased) still in there into a bag and into the trash, see ya.

I remember years ago I had one in my basement living area. I coaxed him, and he got brave enought so that eventually he came out to get his crackers, and one night I decided to put a glass over him and put him in an old aquarium (dry).

I named him Tiger and made him a nice little home in there with a wheel, and wood chips, and food & water. Then one day somebody decided he needed a friend, so we went and bought a little mouse from the petshop.

Poor Tiger was so scared of his new friend that he buried himself in the chips and would only eat when he could sneak past the other, until "one grey night it happened", poor Tiger came no more. I suppose it could've served as a metaphor for my life as it was (I will not mention the other party- save for this), but I'll be damned if I didn't shed a tear or two when we buried him.

Lesson learned here- the more you mess with things, trying to tame nature and such, the more can go wrong with your well intentioned plans, so best to save your intentions for things you know a little more about.
