NiftyNiblick
It reminds me of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight for more than the PPV angle. It's coming several years after its due date. I bought the fight, even knowing it would be on Showtime the following week. The match will be much cheaper, not on TV the following week, so i don't know. It could go either way. A LOTTTTT ... of negative criticism due to the PPV thing so to mitigate that they may make it really cheap. I'm already paying about $170 between internet and cable in my house for a product I rarely watch (mostly because SWMBO has to have her flipping food network and Hallmark, et al). If they can't find a way to air this product within the confines of what I am already overpaying for, then F them. And like I said previously here, these guys already have enough cash on hand to produce this thing themselves 100 times over, and still make a killing. Factor in that since Ernie Johnson and I guess the TNT cameras are involved, you can bet your mortgage on it that there will be a TON of commercials. So let's see. You want me to pony up even $10 to have to listen to Ernie, along with a bunch of commercials as well? Maybe you fit P.T. Barnum's mold of "a sucker is born every minute", but as for me, I'll pass on this whole dog and pony show. If Tiger and Phil really wanted to do this right, they wouldn't just be playing for more prize money paid out by a 3rd party. They'd each bring a suitcase with $5 million in cash EACH to the first tee, and the winner takes that home. Then you can add in however many side bets they want to throw in from cash they have ON HAND. Now THAT appeals to me. A good 'ol fashioned straight up bet where you don't leave the golf course until you settle up - paid out by the loser. But this nonsense of PPV and making me pay for their stupid bet, when I'm the guy scratching out less than $40k a year? I'm not the brightest apple in the bunch, but I think I'll pass on enriching these two even further. While I enjoy watching gilf on TV, i typically watch when convenient and not because it is on. For example i watch the majors if I happen to be home. "Building my schedule?" I have to be honest, cnosil. The one and possibly only good thing about being a broken down senior is not having anything remotely resembling a schedule. I rise whenever I awaken, retire when I'm sleepy, eat when I'm hungry, drink when I'm thirsty, go out when I feel like going out and stay in when I feel like staying in. I literally dreamt of living this way when I was young and working, and now that I do, I have to say that it doesn't suck. Not even a little. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to jack the thread about the pay-per-view Tiger-Lefty match. But when I read "building my schedule," I got a very frightening flashback to when I had one. Your time will come...if you want it to. Maybe you'll still want to have a schedule. You'll know for sure when you get there. And GSwag, $170 for cable and internet probably means that you're not getting, HBO, Showtime, Netflix, and other premium stuff. Food Channel and Hallmark are essentially free with the basic cable package.Thank "SWMBO" for keeping the bill down!
StrokerAce
honestly....they should do this every year for charity. 10 mill is a night at the craps table for these guys. TheWahoo
Like many others, I have no interest in paying to watch this match. Heck, I might not even watch the reruns if an episode of Law and Order is playing on some other channel. While I am old, hopefully, I will still be around if Tiger and Phil decide to play on the Champions tour. Personally, I think as a made for TV event, a "Class of 2011 Reunion Tournament" would be much more entertaining and interesting similar to the President's Cup. Frankly, if the proceeds of this event were going to a worthy charity, I would view it differently and might even subscribe to the PPV.
Mr. 82
And GSwag, $170 for cable and internet probably means that you're not getting, HBO, Showtime, Netflix, and other premium stuff. Food Channel and Hallmark are essentially free with the basic cable package.Thank "SWMBO" for keeping the bill down! We had HBO until recently, when I got a letter from the cable company saying that they were going to start charging me for HBO. I called them and cancelled HBO. I have my cable package down to the most basic of basics. I can tell you that I don't get ESPNU or the NFL Network, which actually thrills me, because I have been boycotting the NFL for the past few years due to reasons I can't go into here, due to TOS and "moral codes". We've got another 10 months left on our 2 year agreement with Comcast, and come next July I'm cancelling the TV portion and we'll get a streaming service of some sort, or I'll be happy with the digital antenna and the channels that we get over the air for free. The thing is that in our current lifestyle, we are barely home anymore, as we spend a TON of time at my aging MILs house, who has a failing memory, and failing everything else, and we are essentially taking care of her. So because of that we watch most of our TV at her house. Now that is a interesting conversation for another day, but to give you a glimpse of how this goes down, imagine sitting with a 90 year old woman who literally has no short term memory, and we'll be watching something on TV when every five minutes the MIL will put the info for the show on the screen, or the channel guide up and scroll through channels for 10 straight minutes. What happens is that because her short term memory is gone, she'll be watching something, and immediately forget what she is watching, so she'll bring up the info for the show to remind herself what she is watching. And if that isn't what she really wants to watch, she'll throw up the guide and try looking for something else. But once she throws the guide on the screen and starts scrolling channels, she'll forget why she put it up there, or what she was looking for. Basically it's a never ending saga of Wheel of Fortune and the local news, because those are the only two channels she can remember for whatever reason. I've tried to train her to remember the Golf Channel, but somehow I haven't gotten very far with that yet. But yeah, paying $170 a month for something I rarely if ever use is stupid. I think I'd have more satisfaction taking about 5 or 6 $20 bills and lighting them on fire, versus what I am paying Comcast every month. You know, that's the beauty of America. It's a land of opportunity and of freedom. You can choose to watch something, or choose not to. You can make the effort to produce something like this, and you are rolling the dice on if you'll make money on it or not. But whatever you reason, or excuse for doing something, or supporting something, or not doing something, or not supporting something, we all get to make those choices every day. At least compared to a country like North Korea where they have the "smile police" where if you don't smile the way the little fat guy running the place likes it, he just takes you out back and shoots you. Sorry, not meaning for this to get political or controversial, but I just appreciate the fact that we still have a semblance of freedom in America to live life the way we want to, and have choices. If those that came up with this idea and event do it right, it will be supported by enough people to make it work. If they do it in a way that turns people off, well then, I guess you have your answer. This sort of reminds me of the group of golfers in my league on Tuesday nights. We have over 268 names on our email list that I send an email to once or twice a week. On a good week with a good email, I'll get maybe 35% of the people to even open the email. Now opening it doesn't mean I know if they actually even read it, but at least I know they have opened it. So that leaves about 65% of this email list where they didn't even look at it. Do I get pissed because I wasted my time on 65% of the people on my list who never even bother to read what I wrote? Nope. I look at the 35% who invested their time, and sometimes even reply to compliment me on the work. I'm just thankful that a few folks appreciated what I did. I don't make any money on this venture, and I certainly don't get paid. It's just a labor of love that I do this for the group. But I can't be concerned with the folks that don't have an interest in what I am sending them. If I cared so much about the 65% that never even read what I write I would have quit doing it a long time ago. It's the 35% that participated that I do this for. With regards to this event, I wouldn't get too upset by the overwhelming majority of comments posted here about this. This definitely isn't a representative sample of the entire golfing world, or public. I have no doubt that if the organizers of this event charged $20 for this that you'll get several million Tiger worshipers to gladly drop that kind of coin on this sort of thing. Heck, even 500k subscribers to the PPV pays for the purse. Throw in the TNT commercials and other side items and both Tiger and Phil are probably going to make a killing off of this spectacle. So I can almost guarantee you'll see it again in the future. NiftyNiblick
Golf, like boxing, is a niche sport appealing to a smaller audience rather than a mainstream one like the NFL's. Boxing fans buy the big PPV fights all of the time, even knowing that the replay will be either on HBO or Showtime the following week. These things go for $65 to $100 for TV. And I would guess off the top of my head that the boxing audience, of which I am part, is substantially less affluent that the golf audience in general. Yet here we are, and our golf crew is almost universally disinterested in watching PPV events. I don't know what that says, but it's something to ponder.
