Stock PW vs 46/48 degree wedge

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I currently play the titleist 620 CB 4-P with titleist SM8 wedges 50 56 60. I am debating whether to switch out the stock pitching wedge for a 46/48 degree SM8. If I decide to get the 46 degree wedge should I switch my 56 and 60 to 54 and 58 to maintain 4 degree gapping between all my wedges? Since my 9 iron is 43 degrees in loft would my proposed idea make sense? Thanks very much!

The theory works, the question that needs to be answered is what is the gapping between the clubs in full swing shots. If you are creating holes you may need different lofts. Many will say that a stock wedge versus a specialty wedge spins differently and has different carry distances.

I agree with CNosil. I did this with my AP2s. I switched out my PW for a 46 degree vokey only to find out that my 9 iron went 150 and the new vokey wedge flew around 134 vs 141 with my set wedge.

I like the chipping versatility of the vokey but that gap was unacceptable. I ended up carrying both wedges and dropping my 3 wood. That way I had all my gaps covered.

Big thing to watch out for is a specialty wedge does not fly as far as a set wedge so be sure to get properly gapped if you are going to make the switch

It depends on your gaps and how good you are at partial shots. There’s not hard rule for 4* of gapping. Cleveland always recommended 4-6* or a 12-16 yard gap. Doing online wedge fitting tools most recommend a 4* gap but that’s just standard. If you look at pro bags they have all kinds of setups. DJ has 5–10* from pw down to lw.

Curious what you are looking to gain/achieve by swapping set wedge for a Vokey

I was faced with a similar decision when I got my 919 Forged's, the set Gap wedge versus a Vokey 50 degree like I'd been playing.  Ultimately I'm not doing a lot of partial shots with the gap, it's more of a full swing club, so I went with the set wedge.  In the 919's it's a 51 degree wedge, so then I got a 54 and 58 Vokey and had each bent a degree weak (after testing and dialing in distances).  So, my PW through lob wedge set-up is a set wedge in PW and GW, Vokey's in sand and lob, lofts at 46, 51, 55, 59.  And I have had plenty of less than full swing GW shots but have no problem scrubbing off distance with where I position my hands on the grip, length of backswing, etc.  Be aware, weakening the wedges adds bounce, which I wanted.  I could have gone a degree strong on a 56 and 60 but that would have reduced bounce.

My PW is really on used for full shots so I would not deviate from the set wedge. Likely to lose yards going to a Vokey. However, if you use it alot around the greens you may find that to be beneficial and can always bend the loft a touch stronger if you are having gap issues.

And one thing to not overlook is the shaft. The shaft in wedges that I primarily full shot clubs should be the same or comparable to the other iron shafts. I play $ Taper 130s all the way from 5 iron to my 50* wedge since I hit most full shots with a 50* wedge.

My current setup is 45 pw, 49 gw then 52 and 56. The 52 and 56 are my old wedges that I will probably need to replace within a year. The pw and 49 are in my new set and are staying. I am trying to decide if I should go 52-56 again, which is okay, but is it necessary? My other consideration is 54-58 or else just replace the 56 with another one and drop the 4th wedge.

I went this year with SM7 wedges in 46*, 56 bent to 54* and a 60* and have been pleased with the new wedges.  Newer grooves and a wee bit softer shaft as I did not reshaft these wedges to the X100 I had in my older wedge set up.

I have a 8* gap and a 6* gap and find that those seem to fit my swing speed and skill set for now, however  everyone needs to find out that zone for themselves.

It could be that those who advocate for a 4* gap ........are the ones selling the wedges !

I had went back to my set PW (MP-32) after playing a specialized Cleveland PW for a couple of years. I found I treat my PW pretty much as a "10-iron". While it's definitely a traditional loft (47deg), I only use it for 3/4 to full distance shots - just like most of my other irons. It's not a tool I use greenside very much at all.

The rest of my wedges are 52/56/60.

I think its awesome you have identified your gaps. Most people don't have a clue what they really are capable of playing because maybe they think they need this or that  set of wedges (typical pw, gw, sw, lw / ~4 deg apart).

Some of us are old enough to remember days when ~7-8 deg gap existed between pw / sw and oh btw no lob wedge existed and/or was not readily available per se. You learned to hit all the shots (full, 1/2, 3/4, chip/pitch) with two wedges.
