After watching the UPS truck drive circles around my house for 4 hours yesterday my new set of Wilson D7 Forged irons arrived! Sadly, they didn't get in until the rain came and the light faded.

But it gave me time to inspect them and get ShotScope tags installed and ready for today.

Chris, I'm surprised you went with Recoils... have you played/tested composite iron shafts before?  I cannot tell from the photo but what model/weight did you choose?

And we’re off!   Thanks so much to MGS and Wilson for selecting me to be a part of this test.   I do check the boxes for this one, older guy, lower handicap but handicap up some from peak season

First and as always, big appreciation to MGS for hosting the best golf forums on the internet. And a big shout out to Wilson Golf for getting involved.  I am really excited to put these clubs int

Let's get this party started! HUGE thanks to MGS and Wilson for this opportunity. This is my first-ever MGS review and I'm pretty anxious because I get so much value out of this site that I don't want

I could hardly sleep last night when I saw the tracking notification in my email and it told me that the Wilsons would be arriving today.  Kudos to Wilson for shipping Next Day Air to us.  They didn't have to do that, but they did.

The room I use as my office is right next to the front door.  I can lean back in my chair and watch UPS leave items on my porch.

I don't know how I managed to get through the day, but I did.  Full disclosure:  I turned my camera off, muted my phone and tore into the box as soon as I could.

The clubs were really packed nicely.  It's the little things that make a big difference, and Wilson is getting the little things right.

I don't know why, but I always appreciate it when the manufacturer sends you your specs back, especially when they do it so nicely.

Many thanks to Ed and all the folks at Wilson for doing such great work and doing it so quickly.

Arccos is installed and ready to go.  The F8's are unpaired and the D7's are paired.

Pretty sexy in the bag as well.  I didn't know if I'd be bothered by the POWER HOLES, but they're easy to overlook.

A post-work trip to the range was thwarted; I had to play 7th grade math teacher.  But we're all set now and I should be able to take today's last call from the car, so I'm hoping to be on the first tee by 5pm tomorrow.  Stay tuned!

Another set with Recoils 👍.  Same question to you I asked Chris.  Really interested in how these shafts perform with these irons.

So the Recoils... If I could have ordered them with any shaft I would have stuck to the nippon modus 105 that I really like. But that shaft was on the Upcharge list. But for the 7 club set the recoils were a free shaft (they are a $450 Upcharge of you get the 8 club set... Wilson, you might want to look into that).

I picked the 110g F4 flex shafts. I'll get some launch monitor numbers to check everything, but from first day on the course, I forgot all about them being graphite. They felt great and did exactly what I was expecting.

As I sit here, I'm very glad I didn't get the nippon's.

Yea, that's really odd 😕.  Good to hear that your initial opinion is that they perform like steel.  That is what many are saying about them.  I'll be interested in whether you notice any reduction in hand/wrist/shoulder fatigue playing them.

I've been eyeballing @chisag's Cobra Tour Forged set that have the Recoils.  I think they are too much into the players category for me but they might be a great experiment set to see if I can handle a players category club and how composite shafts feel - I have never played any.  But, with winter in AZ just around the corner and my plans to do a True Spec full bag fitting in Scottsdale, I've chosen to hold off and see what that yields.

I am going to check with True Spec and see if they have the new Wilson D7 forged among the multitude of options - these irons really interest me.

Edit:  Just checked TrueSpec website... no Wilson 😞.

FYI, I am playing the Recoil shafts and happy w them. As an older golfer (almost 74) w some arthritis in my hands the Recoils seem to help. Obviously I don’t have the stiff/heavier shafts that you young guys are using.

Yes, yes I can. These D7 Forged are replacing a Cleveland Cbx2 wedge, Sub 70 639cb short to mid irons and an i500 5i, so much to compare.

Thank you guys!   You went above and beyond on your anniversary @revkev.  Hope you and Mrs. Rev have a great celebration!

I’m most interested in how these interact with the turf compared to what you are used to (thin/wide soles)

I went and got fit for these shafts, so I hit them in the fitting and really liked them.  I also just put a Recoil into an old Mizuno FliHi 2i that had an old Dynamic Gold telephone pole in it.  I'm loving that club now.  I hit it just about as far as the NM105s, but higher and with better dispersion.

I have the same shafts and had the same experience today.  I didn't think about the shafts, other than that they seem just a little lighter than the 105s.

Tuesdays are my busy days, but I couldn't resist. Ran out to a local lighted driving range to work up and down the set. Decided not to shoot any video (poor lighting, range balls, off a mat...) but thought you might at least want a hot-take, even if it comes with more than a couple grains of salt:

 • These feel really, really solid. I would describe a typical range ball feel as "hollow,." You can just tell there's nothing going on in there. Not unlike me, some days. But these D7s upgraded the range ball feel to "crunchy." (Hey, it's still a range ball.)
 • Speaking of feel, I was a little concerned coming into this test that I would be giving up feel. That sounds strange for a forged iron, I know, but between the 'power holes' and the 'power chamber,' I was worried that I wouldn't be able to place the ball at contact (i.e. low-toe strike, mid-heel strike, etc) and every shot would just kind of feel the same. That is not the case at all and in the best way. I got the right amount of feedback to know how to adjust but with minimal visible difference to ball flight. With the shorter irons, it seemed I couldn't miss. The D7 4i (my favorite in my Ping set) was an absolute monster and the 3i was much easier to find the center of the face compared to my Ping.
 • These irons are a touch flatter than my Pings (standard vs 0.5 degree upright) and right away I noticed just the softest of butter cuts with my standard swing. Spent some time working shots both ways then high/low and really didn't have any issues, though it's difficult to judge just how workable
 • Ball flight is noticeably lower and more penetrating and if that holds, that's immediately going to make these real contenders to stay in my bag permanently
 • I feel silly talking about turf interaction while hitting off a mat, but I could definitely feel the bottom of the club. We'll see how that translates to grass.

As a fun aside, I had three different people stop and watch me hit a couple shots and one audible, "wow." So that feels pretty good. 🙃

Playing 9 tomorrow evening and again Thursday AM before work. Will report back before I head into my usual weekend routine (18 Friday, 18 Saturday, 9 Sunday, lay on a heating pad Sunday afternoon) By next week, I'll have enough Arccos data to post some preliminary numbers.

Think I need some Recoil shafts (or some other graphite shafts) in my next set of irons. I have a feeling this tennis elbow will only get worse as I get older.

So my 4:00 call from the car turned into a 4:30 I had to lead from my home office.  I get to the course, grab a ticket for a bucket of balls and key my PIN into the machine.

image.png.594bdd1f0ba085e55b86b07e1f3939bd.png

The assistant pro leading my daughter's junior class just laughed and told me to go out and play a few holes while she had the kids.  So off I went.

So with no range balls, no warm-up, no stretching, I'm standing on the 10th tee.  180 yard par 3, about 165 to the front edge.  I pull 8 iron (my 165 club - you don't want to be long here) and proceed to top it.  No problem, I haven't even swung these things before, I'll just grab another one... and top that one.  So a little bit of fear sets in, but undeterred, I drop a third ball and actually find the clubface.  But I came up about 10 yards short.  I hit a fourth, and the same thing.  The last two shots felt good and looked good in the air.  So maybe these clubs are a little shorter than the Cobras?

image.png.6dc2e64d11d5ddc94e0489caf6f8cb10.png

Yes, that was a chip-in "birdie" with the no-holes gap wedge.

Figuring that these clubs are a little shorter, I hit 4 iron instead of my usual 5 off the 11th tee.  With the Cobras, if I hit 4 and turn it over the least little bit, I run out of room and I'm in jail.  I hit two 4 irons here, turned them both over, and I was in good shape.  From where I was off the tee I'd normally hit a sand wedge in, but I figured I'd try the D7 gap wedge, and it turned out great.  20 feet beyond the hole.

image.png.64028bb0d21fa3b91f7b702e1d0ee82d.png

I didn't hit a horrible shot on 12, just pushed it a bit and missed the green right.  Nice and high for a 6i; much higher than the Cobras.  And boy these things are feeling so smooth.  Incredible feedback on well-struck shots.

image.png.2e42e7c6a12d4c02c6b48c4ec415e49f.png

I hit a nice 4i off the tee on 13 and then absolutely flagged a little 9i with the ball about 4 inches above my feet.  That 9i shot was downhill and would usually be a wedge, but so what.  I like three-footers more than I like 145 yard wedge shots.

image.png.4eb4909b0bdb2888efe50b48571292f5.png

I skipped 14 and 15 to save some time and headed to the 16th.  The 4i off the tee was a little off the toe; it didn't feel great but it was certainly useable.  It plays downhill, so that actually wasn't as good a shot as the one on 13.  The 7i with the ball a few inches below my feet and coming out of the rough was a wonderful shot.  It actually landed right next to the hole but rolled out about 20 feet to the fringe.  I decided to chip instead of putting and chipped it to about 2 feet.  This hole is only 420, so don't think of it as a birdie, but it's a good par.

image.png.64866a30a86fbb3d01d3f3fec213c641.png

I wonder what happens when you really catch one off the toe.  I found out on 17.  It's awful.  I thought I broke my hand, even with the graphite shafts.  And it went nowhere.  But, it didn't hook quite as much as the F8 would have, so it was still playable.  With the ball above my feet and a slightly uphill lie to an elevated green, I really thought I'd need one more club.  But I didn't.  I didn't miss by more than about 6 feet, but I was in the back bunker.

image.png.e77bac410b42500b4113386a8b5379e7.png

The 5i redeemed itself off the 18th tee leaving me in a great spot, but a little too close to hit one of the D7s.  So I just hit lob wedge, took my two putts, grabbed my daughter and headed out.

image.png.aeaf439e6b083b3cdfebad73176b401d.png

I'll be interested to get more data into Arccos to see what my yardages look like.  This isn't nearly enough data to draw any conclusions, but it does look like I'm about a club shorter with the D7's.  However, if I can hit as many good iron shots day in and day out as I did tonight, I don't know that I'm too worried about losing a club of distance.

Thank you guys!   You went above and beyond on your anniversary revkev.  Hope you and Mrs. Rev have a great celebration!
I’m most interested in how these interact with the turf compared to what you are used to (thin/wide soles)

Will do as this is something I’m interested in. Also I’m likely to get a nice mix of conditions. It’s extremely wet now but you also weather for us will have it starting to dry out as September moves into October so that it’s not all that wet in November.

To be clear these soles aren’t all that thin - certainly thinner than the G30’s but not like a blade or MB. My son has an old set of Adams MBs so I will get a comparative shot with his 7 iron and mine soon.

The top line is really nice, whenever we get a sunny day (Sally is still lingering even here) I will get Laura to help with some nice outdoor top line shots.

I'll be going to the range this afternoon (I was going to go yesterday but I had to go and fix a plumbing issue for a very useless friend of mine) to give these clubs their first test drive. I'm taking my 4, 6 and PW Bridgestones to try and compare as well as take a few comparison photos. Stay tuned.

BTW, I think you guys will like the Recoils. I've been playing them for about 4 years and really, really like them a lot. However, because I LOVE my Even Flow wood shafts, I went with the Project X Catalyst because they look to be the iron version of the Even Flows.

So my 4:00 call from the car turned into a 4:30 I had to lead from my home office.  I get to the course, grab a ticket for a bucket of balls and key my PIN into the machine.

Yes, that was a chip-in "birdie" with the no-holes gap wedge.

Figuring that these clubs are a little shorter, I hit 4 iron instead of my usual 5 off the 11th tee.  With the Cobras, if I hit 4 and turn it over the least little bit, I run out of room and I'm in jail.  I hit two 4 irons here, turned them both over, and I was in good shape.  From where I was off the tee I'd normally hit a sand wedge in, but I figured I'd try the D7 gap wedge, and it turned out great.  20 feet beyond the hole.

I didn't hit a horrible shot on 12, just pushed it a bit and missed the green right.  Nice and high for a 6i; much higher than the Cobras.  And boy these things are feeling so smooth.  Incredible feedback on well-struck shots.

The 5i redeemed itself off the 18th tee leaving me in a great spot, but a little too close to hit one of the D7s.  So I just hit lob wedge, took my two putts, grabbed my daughter and headed out.

Tough outing, I do hope that the next few ones will be better, about being short, what are the differences between the lofts of the Wilson's and your other clubs?

That could be an explanation, but I am not sure without further data to compare it, it is impossible to tell.

A belated happy anniversary @revkev! Love the pics, you can really see the offset difference between the D7 and the D7 forged in the side by side view. Definitely curious to see what sort of ballflight differences you see between the two lines.
