Taylormade M2 and P790 distance comparison

Hey All,

I was recently playing Taylormade M2 irons (4-AW) and loved them. I got great distance (7 iron about 170 meters) and they felt good as well.

I recently upgraded to Taylormade P790 and have lost distance across all the irons (10 to 15 meters). This is frustrating as I would expect newer clubs to have better tech and at least go the same distance.

I upgraded also as the back of my 4 iron fell out and was never found and it couldnt be replaced, club was still usable but sounded and felt terrible so I took the opportunity to upgrade.

I understand the lofting between the clubs are different, for example the M2 7 iron is 28.5 compared to P790 at 30.5. But when I spoke to Drummond golf sales, they said they should be longer, and I also got a response from taylormade marketing and they said the same.

I love the look and feel of the p790, just concerned about the distance discrepancy, should the same club in p790 travel the same distance or further? or does the difference in lofting mean what I am seeing is correct?

In theory since the M2 irons are relatively new with the lower loft they should in theory carry a little farther.  But there is more to it than loft as you never mentioned if you were fit for the P790 or the M2   or if they were just purchased off the rack.  People react to clubs differently and the 790s may just not be the best club for you.

Without seeing launch monitor numbers it’s going to be hard to say what’s going on with distances.
