Passive Aggressive Golf Sayings

Came up in my feed and gave it a read... Had very mixed feelings on it. 

I'm sure I say some of those things, but I would imagine a lot of it is situational and meant in a helpful manner...

What do you all think on these? Do you use them? What's the worst one that is said to you and what is one or a few that you use?

I mean it would be weird if I didn’t use at least 5 of those every round with @Lacassem

but we have fun with some jabs and enjoy it. 
 

One that made me laugh… “well that was an interesting club choice” or similar I’ve said to my brother as he decided a 5 iron was appropriate from 120 yards. 

he was still learning about club distances and decided not to ask for help on that one. Worst part is he hit a beautiful shot too. Just went over the green by a good 40 yards!

Literally used almost all of those…..it’s only passive aggressive if we didn’t know each other .

I think a smarter use of your time as a player is to learn how to ignore the other players and focus.  I don't care what anyone says, I'm not listening when I'm playing.

I've been on the giving and receiving side of many of these.   Normally, they're on a "busting chops" vein.  However, when someone is obviously struggling with their game, it's best to just keep the comments to yourself....that's when they come across the worst.

Seems like an odd collection. I’ve said some of them to encourage another player who’s obviously unhappy with a shot. But there are others I’d never say, not helpful in any way.

I am guilty of saying "good lag"... and actually meaning it as a compliment... but I can see how that might not be well received when the putt is missed.  I will say most of my passive aggressive comments are directed at myself on the course.

Banter, did the author of the article even consider the regular 'guys talk' that involves sarcasm, exaggeration, mutual mudslinging, and good old using each other as the butt of our jokes?  Because unless it is someone I don't know, I am not saying these things because I know passive aggressive like the best of 'em but I am not going to knowingly make myself "that guy" on the course that ends up being avoided.

Agree with the other player obviously unhappy with their play and much more than with one shot.  

What I found reading the list of bold font comments is they are just the run of the mill inane comments said as a normal part of golf.  I don't see them as passive aggressive at all.   

The regular font responses are definitely passive aggressive replies. I can assure you if you start shooting out those responses to my intentionally pleasant course conversation, it will become the most passively aggressive silent round you have ever played.

Author must have a booboo on his hurt feeling.

Ya know, I initially saw the opening statement to the thread and thought, Okay this will be interesting, then I opened the article and read the title.  I was also SO GLAD to see the other comments here (e.g. Lacassem response to EasyPutter) that echoed my thoughts on all of this, somebody got offended garbage. Anyone who feels the need to add, "...and need to stop," to that story is WAY to wrapped up in worrying about their ego, already abysmally low self-esteem, and sensitivities that they should skip golf and spend 24/7 in therapy.  What a useless meat sack.

I read the first few, skimmed a few more, and then just closed the page lol. Absolutely pointless, waste-of-time article if you can even call it that. At least the uproar over Tiger's tampon joke had some merit to it.

With my normal playing pards I have occasionally used comments like "next time I would try a 3 wood instead of driver" when they roll a putt 10 feet or more past the hole.  I like coming up with new never used comments. But my favorite is with my best friend living in Tampa now but visits Phoenix often. He is 50 but a big hitter and usually has plenty of birdie opportunities. When he misses a makable birdie putt and taps in for par I always say with exaggerated enthusiasm "GREAT Par CJ!" He wanted an autographed 8x10 head shot for his office and requested I sign it "GREAT Par CJ!"

There are some dumb things to say on that list, but I don't think that I have ever heard a lot of them in a passive aggressive way. "That'll play" is no different that saying, "good shot", 'good ball", "shot", or "nice". The author needs to chill or take up a new hobby. Passive aggressive is the guy in the group behind you sitting in the middle of the fairway while your foursome takes way too long to putt and clear the green. If you are always hearing these things in your group, it is probably someone trying to passively encourage you to calm the f down before you have a heart attack.

But my group is fond of "nice drive, though" after screwing up an approach after a particularly good drive.

Gotta admit, that one sparks an extra tinge of pissed off (at myself) within me.

I'm a little too fond of "You're standing a little too close...after you hit it" because it killed ONE TIME, and now I like using it to annoy my son.

We both crack ourselves up with the old "Right club, though" on a missed putt.

More in line with the article is the "You're dancing" when we're on the green but miles from the flag, or finally getting on the green for double or worse.

... You probably remember The Hawk saying anytime a Sox player hit a Home Run but foul "Right size, Wrong shape!" and I am guilty of using that one on the golf course with my friends because like your son, it annoys them too.

Unfortunately, that’s often the story of my golfing life - great drive followed by a crappy second (and usually third) shot. I piss myself off greatly when I do this.

What’s really most annoying about it (lousy second shot following great drive) is that the driver is usually my weakness and both hybrids and irons are generally a strength in my game.

That is the same exact feeling i had. The author clearly takes some things way too seriously. Only about 5-6 of the 30 were truly passive aggressive things that i have never heard and was shocked that someone would actually say that. Most of these are contextual and totally fine if its with a person you play with regularly. The rest i think are actually common practice and completely fine. 

For instance if im playing on my home course with a visitor playing there for the first time, If they hit a tee shot that looks like its going into the woods, but i know its not, I will tell them it opens up over there and that they will be safe. I am not there to be your swing coach or mental coach to help you feel better about the swing you just put on the ball, but i do want to reassure you that the result is not as bad as you think.

I missed this the first time around as it was posted at the start of Lent and I was very busy.  Gold Digest's time has come and gone - I don't know exactly why it keeps sending me stuff but whenever I read it I think, irrelevant.  I've heard every single one of these comments more than likely in the course of the last month.  I've certainly used some of them.  All were meant either as a joke or to be kind.  Context matters - I think that I can figure the context out, thank you.  

 

They've just run out of stuff to write about is all that I can think.  No one's buying the print edition anymore so there's no need for filler.  I don't get the need for this piece.

I feel the same way. A lot of their articles give me the sense they are left searching for material and will write about anything with some pretty unpopular takes. Like most of the people have said most of these sayings are in the spirit of good banter or some of the less "insulting" ones are truly meant as a compliment. If one or some of your playing partners can't take a jab or two or truly don't like the banter then either you stop or you save it for when your playing with people who can take it and dish it out.

I personally like the give and take of good jabs as it gets me fired up to try and be competitive.
