2023 Ryder Cup - Official Thread

Teams are starting to take shape, spots are still up for grabs, but still a lot can happen between now and then. 

Who do you think makes the teams? Who is on the outs and any predictions or guesses on how it will turn out while we are nearly a month out?

Lets get the hype going as well chatter because the majors are over. PGA tour wraps up this weekend and we still need something to talk about!

I do but I also don't like that pick. Love JT but he shows no signs of climbing out of the funk he's been in all season.  Just too many other deserving options to support him getting the nod. Team Euro is flat going to be tough to beat no matter who the captain picks are... so it may not matter.

I like the idea of the U.S. bringing young blood. Cam Young and Sam Burns would be on the team if I were picking. Probably at the expense of Fowler and JT.

Finau is in the discussion for one of those last spots as well as Bradley and Glover. I'd be looking to get as many under 25 players in as I could justify.

I was thinking it would be a lot of fun to have National Team match play in the off-years of the Ryder Cup. 

I'm imagining a 12 Nation field determined by the combined ranking of the best 9-12 golfers from each country. Each golfer would be worth a value and the team would be seeded based on the world ranking. Wildcard if you had a "Rest of Europe" team etc based on the world rankings having an abundance of high ranked players from disparate countries.

How much fun would this be to watch over the course of a month in August/September 2025?

I just hope they pick the team that has the best chance to win, liv or otherwise. Europe will be tough enough without silly games.

I had this conversation (via text) with a buddy a week ago.  Here are my thoughts

So let’s say the top 8 here are locks.  
Add Ricky as a 95% lock 

And say Morikawa and Bradley are pretty certain.  That’s 11 

If they take JT (which I honestly don’t think he will)  then I guess the next man out is young followed by Burns 

But I honestly think he’ll take Glover over JT and should  

So that’s my 12

Then I went so far as to start forming the teams

 

Harman and Glover would be a pretty interesting team.   Two tough guys who drive an opponent crazy with putting 

Then just spitballing 

Keegan and Jordan 
Cantlay and Schauffle 
Morikawa  and Ricky 
Brooks and Scheffler 
Homa and Clark 

I really like the first four teams the last two could be mixed an matched

As hard as it is to see JT miss the cup, because he has been so good in match play, I can’t disagree with Glover getting the nod. It just hasn’t been there consistently for JT this year.

This ryder cup will have an * without LIV.  You need DJ, Brooks, and patty reed.  Patrick Reed has five top 10 finishes this year.  JT stinks

Tough, but Keegan hasn’t given Zach enough reasons to pick him in the past couple weeks. Glover faded a little as well in Atlanta. Would have been great stories, but Zach is looking at a lot of metrics. JT better ball out in Rome or it’ll look bad.

Hmm, not sure what I think about the picks. I suppose taking Koepka and Burns sort of allow picking JT and Jordan, but I am curious if that is a mistake, regardless of how well they play in the RC. For pure form it is certainly a question mark. Can easily argue they have earned it from past performance historically, but Europe is a pretty stacked team, they better bring it.

Burns can putt like a savant when he’s on, AND he’s Scheffler’s best buddy so I see that being a pairing. Keopka will have a chip, even though the other boys like him & respect him. I anticipate he will play very well.

Personally I love the picks.  JT is the biggest question mark, but based on his track record I don’t see how you can leave him home.  He’ll obviously pair with Jordan, who hasn’t exactly been on form either.  A lot riding on that pairing I think…

Can’t wait for this cup.  My leave is already in…I’ll be home and up to watch the first tee shots!

Brooks - he's on the LIV tour right?

Speith - Naw! he just seems to be limping along and not really motivated.

JT - That's a slap in the face to all those guys who played hard and made it to Atlanta with a couple who had multiple wins to boot......

Ricky - while i like the rocket man, see the above statement with reference to multiple winners...

Burns - kind of in a fog about this pick, nothing really jumps out as to why and again see the above.

IMO Keegan and Lucas are more deserving based on recent performance. The "pick my buddy" part of the selection system won the day.  I suppose the upside for both is that they won't be part of what will likely be a losing team.
