What is the purpose of a thick top line on a game improvement iron?

It seems that a thick top line would move weight high in the head, which is the opposite of the design goals of a SGI, which is typically designed with weight low in the club head to help elevate the ball.  What am I missing?

Maintaining ball speed throughout the face.  With a very thin topline you would lose way more ball speed with a high on the face shot.

I should add I'm not a club designer, I have no evidence that my thoughts are correct and I'm sure there's more to it than that.

Game improvement irons usually have some sort of cavity and many are coming with thinner faces. That removes weight. The weight is spread around the perimeter of the head and more weight is needed to achieve the higher MOI.

then there is weight added to the bottom to help move the cog lower and also a shorter hosel for some is used to help lower the cog.
