Probably cheaper than the HMB or PXG options. EDIT - Should say I have flirted with the concept of a "driving iron"/3 iron for two seasons now and probably shoot myself in the foot with it more often than not. When it's good, it's good. But it's bad a lot. Working on it. Currently with the SpeedZone since it's super forgiving, but I also have a Tour Edge CB Pro Tungsten 3 iron kicking around that launches low bullets. chisag
... A fitting is always a good idea, especially if you are unsure of your numbers. I have also experienced too much spin through the years but my latest fitting showed I was producing too little spin. Same problem with my drives falling out of the sky biut I was a little shocked to see the reason was not enough spin. I was producing around 1700 rpms with my Xtreme and Tensei Orange s-flex combo. We settled on a Sim Max and a Diamana Limited 55 gm r-flex that produced around 2300-2400 and increased my distance by 20 yds, at least during the fitting. On course it was more like 5-10yds but more accuracy but several pretty long drives. I don't think I would have discovered my lack of spin issue without a fitting. cnosil, sirchunksalot, GaDawg and 1 other 4 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Ventus Red Velocore 5R Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... Rickp
Your swing speed is about 5 mph faster than my average , i csn get 88-90 on occasion but for the most part im living in the 84-85 neighborhood. Side note, I was at 90 2 years ago and hadn’t realized i dripped that much until my Titleist Thursday fitting. Your description of yours drives is exactly what my drives were doing with my TS1 and Fubuki Sr shaft. It was a high spin head. I believe the Max is in the same category high spin, designed to help get the ball in the air. Obviously a fitting is the best way to go, to see exactly what is happening in your swing, delivery at impact and ball flight. You mention balls. You might want to try a sleeve of the AVX. It is the lowest spinning of Titleist’s premium line. Good luck, i am getting a few less yards than you out of the driver. So I know what it feels like to think there has to be a few more yards out there. What Rob says is correct. Get Fit by someone legit. You can’t swing a 9i at MB without hitting a Golf Pro.I’ve been on 3 different LM in past 3 o so weeks and swing speed was different each time. The variation was 78-85 so Im kinda taking the avg. The Trackman that Titleist used seemed to be the best numbers. The Kuro Kage 50gr R2 seems to be the winner.Good luck and let us know how works out.Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy Grand Stranded, sirchunksalot, Golfspy_CG2 and 1 other 4 Quote Rick Left Hand, Driver; PXG 0311XF Cypher 50 gr Senior 5 wood; Ping 425, Senior Shaft 55 gr 7 wood; Ping 425, Senior Shaft 55 gr 5 hybrid; Cally Steelhead, Hazardous R2 Irons; Mizuno JPX 923HM 7-GW Recoil 460 F2 Wedges; Titleist S9 54*, Mizuno SW 56* Putter; Waaay too many to list
Kenny B
8 hours ago, Rickp said: Here’s 2 charts that I found a while ago. My swing speed is around 80-82 and right now 200-215 seems to be normal. It’s work in progress at the moment. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy There are a couple of factors that affect these numbers. The first being what are the lofts of the irons. At the bottom end of the bag my numbers are higher than those shown, even when I "adjust" my stronger lofts to what used to be typical. The second is the firmness of the turf and rollout. I don't carry the driver as far as shown though (swing speed is very comparable to yours), but I get quite a bit of roll due to firm, dry turf. Maybe I need a new driver... hmmm! Grand Stranded
Thanks @Rickp@chisag and @Kenny B @Golfspy_CG2 @Micah T It's funny, yesterday when our round was over one guy gave me 2 AVX's to try, and another gave me a 2 ball promo sleeve of Wilson Tour somethings(?) to try this week. I know the obvious answer after seeing Rick's chart, is to go get fit. Especially since my drives seem to get very little roll out. Just yesterday I played in a 4 some with a guy who plays to the same cap as me who's a couple years younger, I'm in a little better shape than him but he's a bigger stronger guy. My ball would land well ahead of his, but his low(too low imo) drives would roll out past mine about half the time. The reason I said I'd probably wait until Spring for a fitting is I have about 4 more days of golf this week, and that will be it for a while. I'll be going up to Long Island for Christmas and won't be back down here until my sister is recovered from her knee replacement on 1/4. I'll be helping her out and spending time with my 91 year old dad. I don't see the sense in getting fit for a driver right now when I might not be able to play for 6-7 weeks. I'm thinking wait until I'm back here playing and all the new equipment is out... although knowing me, this is BS I'll probably be looking for a fitter up there right after New Years, LOL. edingc
I've had various Epic Flash hybrids in my carts on multiple sites. So far have resisted the impulse. Regardless of whether I play the SpeedZone irons or my Maltby PTMs, I have a gap around the 19 degree mark. I'm all in on the Callaway Super Hybrid replacing the 3 wood, but that compresses the gap between it and my 2 hybrid. Ideally, I'd rather find something that stops a bit better than the 2 hybrid, so a 19ish degree hybrid makes sense. Liking the Epic Flash because it's adjustable. I do have the SpeedZone 4 iron or the Tour Edge 3 iron that both fit in at 19 degrees, but I'm not sure how comfortable I am from the deck with them. Just thoughts. Realistically, I think I'm staying put. The major advantage of switching to a hybrid would be that I could go to a 52/56/60 wedge setup in the future if I wanted. cnosil 1 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 7.5 / Anti-Cap: 13.0 (Last Updated Feb. 19, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°, -1/N), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. Grand Stranded
So I'm not sure whether this post belongs here or not, but since this thread is where a lot of people talk about impulse purchases, I'm thinking the story I'm about to tell could be one that someone else learns from... I've talked about wanting a second set of clubs for up on Long Island, and at $89 per club, the PXG 0211 irons seemed like a great option. Because of covid issues, I took a chance and did an online fitting with PXG rather than travel 50+ miles to the nearest PXG fitter. Their phone rep was very nice, and after talking about me and my game, we decided to go with the MMT 70 gram shafts in regular, and adjust the lofts 1* strong in the 5 & 6, and 2* in the 7-GW. So the clubs arrive, they're beautiful, but something just feels off with them. I chalked it up to simply having to break in a new set of irons. Then the last few days we've had a stretch of cold weather down here, so I decided to put my old Rogue X irons in the bag for a couple of rounds. The difference in ball flight, distance, and especially contact was very noticeable. So this morning, I made that 50 mile drive to the PXG fitter, and brought along my Rogue X 5, 7, and 9 irons with the 0211's. After just a few swings, he said he would've put me in the PXG's I/2 inch longer, and I had three options. Reshafting (at $50 per club), trying to put extenders in, or returning the clubs to PXG and taking a 15% hit on the purchase price due to return/restocking fee. Since I won't be playing after Saturday again for about another 6 weeks or so, I chose the final option of just returning the clubs. It's a shame, because if I had done the smart thing in the first place and gotten an in person fitting, I think I would've loved the irons. The lesson I finally learned is a deal on golf clubs is only a deal when they "fit" you. If they don't, you're wasting money. Don't "assume" you know your specs, or shaft profile. GO GET FIT!!!!! A lot of us do. We're very lucky here to have access to a lot of information from very good players, and what is the first thing they always tell us? GO GET FIT. Yet because of all the other knowledge we've gotten from them, we start to think we know more than what we do. It turns out, I picked the right head, and shaft profile for my game, but the shaft length threw me for a loop despite me doing what I thought was all my homework. I'd checked the specs and they showed the Rogue X and 0211's having the same length throughout the set with the exception of .125" on the 5 and maybe the 6. But I found out today that PXG measures club length differently from most OEMs. The fitter explained to me the different way they do it, but my eyes glazed over... I'm beginning to think these companies have made such a mess of things with the non uniformity industry wide of shaft flex ratings, shaft lengths, etc, it's almost impossible self fit properly. Don't get me wrong, I've played with, and had some very good rounds with those PXGs. I could've kept them and probably adjusted to the shaft length in them, but why would I? The idea behind getting new should be upgrading in a certain area such as distance or dispersion, not having to make adjustments to get back to where you were with your old stuff.
