How Good is Good Enough

I just want to hit the ball consistently. If I can bogey golf every day, all day, then that's fine. If I can par, even better. As long as I can be hit the ball consistently.

In my 20's I broke golf clubs every way there was to break one.

Not something that I'm proud of. In hindsight, why did I ever get so wound up and pissed off over a game? Golf is meant to be fun. Enjoy being outdoors with good friends while enjoying a cold one or two.

It reminds me of Claude Harmon's reprimand to son, Butch. "I don't know why you get mad out here because you're not very good. Ben Hogan, he's good, but you don't see him carrying on like that."

18 would be perfect yeah? I think only Chuck Norris did that.

Chuck Norris got a 9. The back nine waved the white flag while he was making the turn so he ended with a zero in.

After a conversation with my son last night I think my goals have changed a little bit. He is turning 11 and plays a lot of different sports but golf has always been the one he enjoys the most. He has decided that he wants to make golf his focus moving forward and plan everything around playing or practicing year round. He has actually been spending about an hour a day for the last month rolling putts on our indoor green. So now with him wanting to practice and play more maybe I have another run at the US Open and Mid Am still in me.

Sounds like good parenting to me!

On occasion things work out but most of all I am just happy it was his decision.

In all honesty, if I could consistently score in the low 80's with an occasional flirt with 78, 79, I'd be very happy.

Interesting topic!!!! Good enough for me throughout my time as a golfer has generally been a stroke or two either side of 75. When I've been at my best it's been breaking 84, my worst 77.

Right now though it's having some laughs, a cigar, a couple of drinks and if I break 80 at Bayou? That's a great day!

That should be 74 not 84.

It's easy for me: 79 or less. Simple. Just let me see the number start with a seven.

I currently sit at a 1.9 index and based on my limited practice time (young kids and new job) I'm at a point of acceptance with that. I don't look at score anymore specifically, but to answer your question "good enough" for me is based on individual segments of my rounds. I keep a goal for greens in reg, fairways, and try to limit misses. "Good enough" for me would be a +2 index and competing for state amateur titles. Hopefully I can achieve that when the kids are older and I can donate more time to the practice tee.

I usually am pretty happy if I shoot in the 70s. It means I struck the ball well and stayed in play. With as much as I get out, that's about all I can expect. The goal is to one day break par, but I just don't have the time to invest right now.

I haven't read everyone's replies yet, but here's where I stand. Right now I'm happy shooting under 100. Yeah, I'm that bad, but I have fun.

I do want to improve. Do I have a place I would be satisfied with. Not sure, but I know I can only go as far as the effort I put into it and I only have time to play 1 or 2 times a week and don't go to the range enough. Don't get me wrong, I make some good shots and have a little potential.

There's one thing I tell my friends every week. If I get a birdie on the 1st hole, I'm not playing any more, so I can tell people I shot under for the day.

Golf is such a bizarre game. I always want to get better, but if the company is good I can still enjoy my round even if my game is poor.

My last round I had low expectations due to no practice, recently cored greens and a really bad run of form. I came out and had 4 over, with a couple of bogeys that may have been attributed to me leaving my 5 iron in the garage. The company was great, which made it easier to play well.

Perspective also helps, I stayed back at work on my last day before 2 weeks holiday to X-ray a 5 month old for a full survey looking for non accidental injuries (the worst part of my job). Bad golf pales into insignificance compared to what could lie ahead for this poor little kid. Fingers crossed for him.

After a tough week I tend to play well as I don't stress over my game, and bad shots get shrugged off.

That said, I still really want to break par!

Sounds like good parenting to me!

Yep,

My Chiropractor friend (who is a real practitioner) and I just had this sort of conversation. He is leaning towards his son not getting sold on golf as he sees it daily (per his practice) as one of the major back ruiners, and not in a minor way.

To that end we discussed how there are people and coaches and pro's out there who are re-examing the swing and how its done. The guys as recent as Jacks era didnt have all the major problems they do today, while the back was still the thing. The swings that have trickled down to the kids on the HS team(s) through televised osmosis are taking their toll. It was and still is amazing to watch the kids throw their hips and chase it ala Tiger day in and day out on the range, only to hope they do not see the same type of fate.

In short good things are on the way for golf all around for the next crop of players.

Mini-golf doesn't count Bones!

THAT, is a quality burn.

This is a fun topic. No possible right or wrong answers here. Based on my work/life balance, I think I would be happy if I could go out and shoot par without having to work too hard. I've always aspired to make golf look easy because it feels like a constant struggle for me.

No... you wouldn't, and you know it!!  When you get to that point, you will say to yourself, "I can play this game.  If I spend just a little more practice time, I get to that next level.  I can be a player!"  We are never satisfied when we reach a goal; we just create a new goal.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Funny you say you've always aspired to make golf look easy. Last fall I shot a two under round, my best of the year. Sitting in the clubhouse after, the guys I played with said that I made it look so easy. To me it felt like 4 hours of grinding and just a lot of work, nothing easy about it. I guess it's like the duck on the pond, calm and cool on the surface but paddling like crazy underneath. This year I want to do it all over again but with a better score.

I doubt if I'm ever happy unless I shoot under 80. Most of the time low 80's and getting a “sniff” of 79. Ultimately I would like to shoot my age. At 71 I need to keep playing at the same level for another 10-12 years. Maybe......

Just wondering. The launch angle seems low? I don't know technology when it comes to launch monitors. What is an ideal number?

Like jlukes suggested play with the simulation on the link he provided. “Ideal” varies based on the person and how they swing. Launch angle might be a touch low; you might do a bit better with 10-14*.
