Great thread, I would prioritize the iron set and look for one 5i-AW pre owned. I paid about $70 each for my Apex '19 irons. I might look for an older set for this exercise but it works well enough.

Ping G30 driver and 3w like my dad has would be another $300 or so in average condition, leaving about $400 for the short game.

I am a fan of Cleveland putters and wedges when it comes to value. I think 2 RTX wedges, either 50° and 54° or 52° and 56°  and a CBX full face 60° for flop shots along with a Huntington Beach mallet putter would finish the set under $1200 if all the stuff was pre owned.

I tried to find receipts for everything in my current set but I had to guess on a few. This thread got me wondering how much more than $1200 I'm into my equipment.

Grand total: about $1260 plus tax plus traded away 2 putters about 5 years old, 3 wedges about 3 years old, and a 3W that was about 3 years old.

I like to do this exercise every now and then and I think $1200 is a decent place to start. Basically, if my bag got stolen tomorrow...how would I build it back? Would I get all the exact same clubs (probably not)? Anyway, as of today here is where I stand:

I didn't quite make it (under $1200) and I may have some gapping issues going from the 28* TS3 to a 34* DBM iron but I would save quite a bit of money if I did it all over again. And I am using "used" prices for the Hogans since they don't get made anymore (all the Maltby prices are "new"). Ultimately, I am becoming less of a "snob" in my iron selection as I am already pretty far away from the major OEMs (with New Level and Hogan) and the more I see from Maltby the more I want an excuse to start trying them. The wedges really intrigue me because of the weight towards the toe (my general miss is toe side). The woods, I am still an OEM snob on. That marketing still convinces me that the engineering is better at a major OEM (without much evidence to back up that claim). Also, my putter is not going anywhere, if anything I might be swayed to go slightly more expensive for the Link.1 LAB putter.

Okay, I thought it over. I don’t really need anything right now, I’m satisfied enough with the way my bag is given my current state of play.

.. But if $1200 were to suddenly appear before me in at the PGA Tour SuperStore, well then I’d have to say that at $350 this is definitely on the list …

… solely because I saw it, took it off the rack, gave it a whirl, and on the first try sank a 15-footer right there on their putting floor.

• Irons (4-PW) - Mizuno MP-54 brand new set for $492.57 off eBay
• Driver - received my current one as a gift but for the sake of this exercise, my last driver was a Titleist 910D2 that I got for $50 from my old Head Pro at our club
• Titleist 915F 3 wood - $105 on Facebook Marketplace
• Ping G425 Crossover 2-iron - $100 on Facebook Marketplace
• Scotty Cameron Del Mar California Putter - $115 on Facebook Marketplace

Total = $862.57 with some room to spare for bag, balls, gloves, etc...

Yikes! and double Yikes!! My recent purchases of wedges and irons are way,  way more significant in cost than your entire bag. Time for me to pump the brakes or prepare for a possible violent intervention by the she person.

$1200 would go to a set of PING S159 wedges...50, 56 and 60 and the leftover $ would be for a Ventus Blue TR 6 for my TSi3 driver head.

 Before joining MGS, probably some off the rack set from Dicks or Academy .

AFTER joining here.  Jeeesh, that's hard to decide!

Being a newer golfer, I can't say that I'd need the top of the line. In the last 2 years alone I've seen 3 or 4 revisions each year from the big 5 makers. (Im sure there is more, and I'm sure they have been doing this for more time than I've been interested in golf)

So, with the limited knowledge I currently have, and the research I've done so far,  I'd choose clubs that would have to last me over more than a few years of play. The hardest one would be the driver, as I have watched, read, and witnessed drastic failures with some top brands (face cracks, body separation, delamination, etc)

All would need to be senior flex shafts

Online shopping:

$400- used (like new)-  Mavrik,  M4, Rogue, or Sim2 irons, 6-pw. 

$250 - like new,- RogueST 4, 5, 7 hybrid/fairway set.

$200 -like new- wedge set 52,56,60⁰ Callaway jaws, taylormade mg3 , or Cleveland zipcore

$200 like new Driver -G400 series or Aerojet with draw/slice biased adjustments.

$150 -putter - really a fan of the double wide or rossi II style putters, so there is a bit of options out there.

Or, I could head to the local golf shop, tell the owner what my budget is, get a fitting, and hope he is a genie, and can make all my wishes come true!!!

Okay finally got around to doing this. Pretty happy with the whole set. I made sure I had never owned any of these clubs before and had to stay to lefty. THe total is $26 over, but there is a 10% off so I am actually well below if I was actually buying today. 

What do you all think?

I would be targeting preowned clubs, probably from a website like Callaway Golf Preowned, with ebay as a last resort for my purchase(s).  Actually, I could probably keep my cost well below $1,200 for a full set by carefully shopping at the Tour Edge Preowned and Sub 70’s preowned club websites.

My top priorities would include getting a putter that fits me (34” long maximum, with a lie angle flatter than 70* — preferably closer to 67-68*). Next would be a driver, something up to 4 or 5 years old would be fine, and I would probably focus on models from Ping (e.g. - G400), Callaway, PXG, Sub 70, and Tour Edge Golf, since I have had success with drivers (and other clubs) from those brands.

With 2021 and 2022 driver models going for $179 to $249, fairways from the same years at less than $150 and hybrid models at $119, plus full iron sets for $349 to $499, I would probably have enough left for some really good wedges in nearly new condition. I might even be able to keep enough money in reserve for at least a few dozen Urethane-cover DTC golf balls (e.g. - Vice Pro/Pro Plus, OnCore VeroX1, Maxfli Tour/TourX, or equivalent).

Total = $1,077 Probably pretty close to $1200 after taxes

Those are all great finds. I forget about Callaway Pre-Owned, but I need to keep it mind for future purchases!
