Watch: McIlroy takes on island green with every club

The island green on the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass can be tough to hit under normal conditions. But what if you're asked to do it with a driver?

Rory McIlroy took on the full-bag challenge recently, with The Players now only a few weeks away as it returns to its former date in mid-March. McIlroy stood on the pro tee and took on the 137-yard shot with every club in his arsenal outside of his putter. The results were somewhat surprising, as he found the green with just four of his 13 shots: pitching wedge, 9-iron, 7-iron and, perhaps most impressively, 3-wood.

"That actually wasn't a very good effort," McIlroy said.

While it's unlikely he'll need the 3-wood for No. 17 next month, it wouldn't be unheard of for players to turn to a 7-iron should the brisk winds kick up as they sometimes did when the tournament was held in March until 2006. Check out full video of McIlroy's efforts below:

Cool concept, poor execution.  And I'm not talking about only hitting 4/13.

They didn't even show where most of the shots went and not one look at the ball coming in to the green or water.  Left me wanting more.  If I just wanted to watch Rory swing I could find a range warm up video.

Yeah, I actually found this video kind of boring. No shot trace or green view, basically like watching a guy hit balls into a net.

Cool concept - too bad on the video - that’s a brutally tough hole to be doing that drill - I would love to see if he was trying to skip the ball with the longer clubs - also it’s a tough green to hold if you have a flatter trajectory so a long iron might be brutal.

I say a video of Luke Donald doing something similar on 155 yard par 3. I think he said 8 iron would have been his stock shot - his best shot was with 7 iron. He made the point that it might not be a bad idea for amateurs to always take Anne tea club. :)

I like the idea, could have been fun to watch, but the cinematography was awful. I'm suprised he only got 4/13, I'd think a tour player should be able to do better than that.

Luke Donald did similar on a Par 3- I think he only missed a few, usually the 3w, hybrid etc.
