Liv Golf Central Thread: Events and News

Message added by GolfSpy_APH,

We haven't had to say this in a while, but as a reminder to all that we are keeping this thread to the golf/signings and related content.

We are not going to get into the politics of it all and where the money is coming from etc.

If you wish to comment on that aspect of it all please feel free to do so on other platforms. Not here.

While much of LIV has become more accepted over the years there are still those who feel strongly against it and the backing. We respect all those who are both for and against LIV, however will not tolerate going into the weeds of all the "other stuff"

If you are not sure whether you should post something either ask a mod or don't post it.

As we have before we will continue to moderate, remove or edit posts that go against our moral code and members will receive alerts or warnings to follow.

Thank you

i still think there are only 2 majors --pga championship and us open , anyone who is a pga member can try , anyone who is a usga 1.4 hc can try .,

British open has basically the same qualifying options as the US Open,  and the Masters invites every usga amateur champion as well as many of the global amateur champions. So for amateurs it has the most opportunity to get into.

But cool story. 😎

The FedEx Cup and Olympics don't even really matter, they are good side notes, but they aren't a major and they don't really count. And to that, PGA tour wins don't really matter.

Saying the Olympics don’t matter is the craziest thing I’ve read on the internet this week and there’s some crazy stuff on the internet.

People want to be Olympic champions and the prestige that comes with that around the world is a lot higher than winning a major in golf.

this is the second time I’ve seen you say this. Ignoring The Open as a major and putting the PGA championship above it is the second craziest thing I’ve read.

The Open is the oldest and most prestigious of the majors. As an American I would take winning The Open over the US Open and would take the US Open over The Masters other than the lifetime exemption that comes with The Masters winning an Open is more prestigious.

Golf in the Olympics is cool, but it doesn't pull that much weight. The Olympics themselves are awesome, and all the sports that have the Olympics as their pinnacle are spectacular. Golf is so new and the field is so limited that it is hard to put much stock into it as more then just cool. But, obv, that is my opinion.

You look at it thru the glass of the sport being played and that is a narrow mindset and ignores the big picture. When a person shows up with an Olympic medal they are given a lot of respect and honor. They have doors open for them that aren’t there from just winning a golf major.

The Olympic medal itself commands respect and those who have them also get that respect and the tons of privileges that go with it.

In many countries winning the Olympics or a world championship comes with lots of perks from the winners government. Here in US unless you are a Tiger Woods you aren’t getting your face on a wheaties box as a golfer but you will for winning a gold medal.

Different strokes. I’ve never watched Olympic golf in my life, means nothing to me as it’s a weaker field than any major and most PGA tournaments.

And I think many of us consider The Masters the pinnacle of pro golf period.

The PGA Championship is by quite a margin the least of the four majors. It's a great event and in recent years the PGA has done a terrific job elevating its quality, but there really is no reason for it to be a major anymore. It's a glorified high-level Tour event run by a different organization.

Yes to most golf fans the Olympic golf isn’t important and doesn’t have a strong field. But that’s the same for many of the Olympic sports. There are a handful of people/teams in most Olympic sports that have a chance to win a medal. In swimming for example there may be 3-5 swimmers who are going to have a chance to win a medal in any race and some may be from the same country. The rest of the field is just there. But there’s also that chance some unknown ir unexpected person/team wins.

But when you put Olympic champion or Olympic medalist on your list of achievements people see that and automatically give respect. That medal opens doors for athletes that winning a major doesn’t. Those athletes can stand in front of a crowd they are speaking to and can say I won an Olympic medal and the crowd no matter what they are into or not recognize and understand what that means. Like you and others that don’t care for Olympic golf there’s a large amount of people that don’t care about golf and what a major is, but that same group knows about the Olympics.

Its not about the sport but what winning a medal at the Olympics brings.

Its the same for anyone who wins a word championship of any kind. The word world champ carry weight. People understand and respect that.

The U.S. Open demands more from its competitors than any championship in the game. That bears out statistically, no matter how one dives into the numbers.

Since 2011, the average champion has been under 28 years old, by far the youngest of the four majors, implying it’s a strong physical test. The setups are the most difficult, too: Since 2000, the average winning score to par has been 4.5 under, while each of the other three majors has yielded an average winning score double digits under par.

if i could i would play --the old course and st andrews before any course in the us ., but that's just me not pro golf .

I would love to play St. Andrews Old Course, just for the history of it, but if I could pick any course in the world to be able to play, there would be quite a few ahead of it. Not a whole ton of courses, but quite a few. I think Cypress Point would top my list.

I feel like, at LIV golf, players shouldn't be allowed to ask the gallery to be quiet. This is supposed to be golf, but louder. There is music playing in the background, the gallery should be allowed to talk as long as they don't do the thing where they yell in the middle of a swing.

It's great seeing Matthew Wolfe back and playing well after the rocky period.  This format/venue really seems to agree with him.  Team 4 Aces are once again leading the pack - certainly the others are getting tired of this pattern.  Looks like the shorts to pants ratio is still in that 60:40 range.  I wonder if some just are superstitious?  As bad as some of the scores are, some should probably make the switch 😆.

Wolff didn’t have the right mindset to be on the pga. Don’t know if it was the pressure or he just doesn’t do well on his own. He talked about being lonely on tour and lacking a support system. LIV is more like us college days and he can relax.

i like him and it sucked he couldn’t thrive in tour like hovland and morikawa

Interesting, I'd not heard about him saying he felt lonely on tour.  It's kind of hard to imagine that being the case, especially for US players.  We probably don't consider the mental aspects of why some players thrive and others do not - mostly due to folks being reluctant to speak about such matters publicly.

It's amazing to see what Perez is raking in this year while playing way below what would usually be associated with that amount of cash winnings.   He's got to be laughing all the way to Wells Fargo with a wheelbarrow in tow.

if liv was a 4 man abcd scramble  i would put perez as a middle c , the way phil is playing he would ba a middle b golfer  , yesterday he would be a low a or high b  golfer .

liv chicago 7700 yds  slope 153 , rating 78 , plus drones and dogs and corn . can't get much better . phil was rolling along then his wheels fell off ..

Just catching the last few holes for todays round.  Looks like the Chicago folks are pretty open minded about giving LIV a look... much bigger crowds than yesterday.  DJ and Cam tied going into #16.  Either the course is playing a bit tougher or the field isn't feeling it today - not much of a gain from yesterdays finish.
