Thoughts on cutting down wedges

Recommended Posts

Bought a new set of the RTX6's this past weekend upgrading from the RTX4's and I'm considering having them cut down a half inch to match my irons. I have read mixed reviews on doing this but I have a bad tendency to hit them fat on full swings and chipping around the greens. I've been told by a few not to do it and just choke down on the club but feel like I get inconsistent hand placement on the club causing fat shots if not enough or thin shots if too much. I am 5'7 with a WTF measurement of 33.25.

It would be no different than cutting down irons. Could work but might not or make things worse.

Choke down and see what happens.

but it’s more than likely a swing issue that’s causing the fat shots. More than likely it’s where your weight is during the swing, and how much of a change in height is happening during the swing especially on chips.

Club length is just a fitting variable.  There is nothing inherently good or bad about doing it.  If you really want to test it I would suggest putting a mark on your grip where you want to choke down to, then make sure your hands are at that mark every time as practice.

Also just something to be aware of, if you cut 1/2" off the length that is probably going to lose around 3 swing weight points.  It's possible you will want to add weight back to get the same feel as before.
