Best DTC Wedges?

PrayingForPar

Recommended Posts

In the market for new wedges. I am gaming with Sub 70 699 Pro irons down through GW and now looking for new 54 & 58 wedges.

Anyone have experience with the wedges from the DTC Brands? Haywood, New Level, Takomo, Sub 70, ect.?

With these being such crucial clubs, not sure if it is worth going Vokey or possibly the new Hi Toe's from TM.

I have the Sub-70 JB wedge in black. If it weren’t for my OCD it would still be in the bag. I gave it to my son once the black finish started wearing off. I really wanted the satin finish but there were inventory issues at the time I ordered. It is really a good wedge. I ordered a 56* and had it bent to 55* to fit between my 50 and 60 degree wedges.

I have played the Sub70 286 wedge at 50* and the JB Full Groove 54* & 60* for a couple years. That 286 wedge was a go to for me from just about anywhere but the bunkers. The JBFG were so great, especially when I needed to open the face. Lots of confidence with the full face. They also feel great being a soft forged steel.

I'm currently using the PXG 0311 3x Forged 50° & sugar daddy 2 60°. These seem a bit more on the pricey side but fitting proccess alongside the actual quality of the clubs seem 2nd to none. Hit these with the confidence the ball is going to pretty much stop dead when needed. I'm now toying with the idea of a 54°/56° 3x Forged instead of the sand wedge I currently have in my bag

I have a couple of Sub 70 286 wedges in the satin finish.  They work well for me.  Good out of greenside bunkers and they will stop on a dime on full shots.  We have a sandy range and the faces have become pretty marked up in a few months but that doesn't affect their performance.  As a graphite user, I am really impressed with Sub 70's shaft choices.

14 of the following:

Taylormade Qi10 Max

Callaway 2023 Big Bertha 3 wood set to 17 degrees

Cobra F9 Speedback 7/8 wood set at 23.5 degrees

Callaway Epic Max 11 wood

Titleist TSR1 hybrid 26 degrees

Ping Eye 2 BeCu 2-SW

Ping G430 irons 6-50 degree

Sub 70 286 wedges 52 and 56 degrees

Hogan sand wedge 56 degree bent to 53

Ping Glide 3.0 Eye2 58 degree

Ping Glide 3.0 60 degree

Evnroll ER2

Ping Sigma 2 Anser

I know you’ve already made your decision but I wanted to throw my support behind sub 70 as well. I play their 699v2 irons and love them, but more so I love their business model. They’re a real, grassroots, local business that cares and treats their customers right. We need more of that in this country, and supporting them (and others like them) is how we get there. 👍🏼

The maltby set will be my next ones.

You know which Maltby wedges? They'll be a whole other level from those Bombtechs.

I’ve got the Maltby MAX Milled wedges in 58°, 54° (bent to 53°) and a 50° (bent to 48°) then down to my 699v2 PW (43°) so they’re all gapped by 5°.

I got the wider 1.05 base for the higher wedges and 0.9 for the lower, all on their Mitsu graphite shaft.

I’ve been very happy with them, especially at the price! Super value. The only thing I’m not 100% stoked on is that 50° that I had bent down to 48° ended up with only 2° of bounce so I cut a divot pretty hard if I’m on a really tight lie. I’m a sweeper, so while I don’t usually take a divot at all, if I don’t with that 50°(48°) I end up skulling it…but that’s my issue, not the club. I think I’d prefer it at 4°, but then the gapping wouldn’t be what I want. So I’ve just got to practice with it! Also, it’s not a good club for me to hit out of the deep rough with that limited bounce…I’ve slid right under the ball more than once. But in taller grass I just hit the 53° and put the ball a little further back in my stance. Usually works just fine. Im still learning.

Like I said, I really, really like the Maltbys! The tricky deal with the 48° is of my own doing, and I’m not unhappy about it!

I know I've posted these in other spots but these are my gangsters..

Jules and Vincent. They get $#!t done!

I've played about every "players" type wedge out there. I've considered my wedge game to be pretty decent. Earlier this year I decided to pack away my ego and get something that I can hit with my eyes closed and these are them!

Maltby Max Milled 1.05 sole. 54° + 58°. The effective bounce of these soles is insane, and crazy effective. Also, these spin more than ANY wedge I've ever played. I love these things!
