nuun All Day Drink Tabs

Indispensable

That is a powerful word and quite a bold one to begin a product review. For the golfer, an indispensable product would be one that must be in the bag each and every time he or she heads to the course. Using the product helps you to score better, while leaving the product at home will have a negative impact on the round. You may feel this way about your putter. Perhaps you realized how much you rely on your laser rangefinder when the battery went dead (I bet you now carry a spare). Regardless, you know that there is something indispensable in your bag.

“So Dave, what you are saying is that a drink tab is indispensable?”

Actually I think that is exactly what I am saying. As you know, I have previously reviewed the nuun Active Hydration electrolyte drink tabs (HERE). While that review kicked around the benefits of drinking an electrolyte solution as opposed to water (like from the toilet?), it was published in March, and I had not experienced nuun on a truly hot day. A few weeks ago, a few of us went out for our first 100 °F round. The first one of the season is always the roughest. Thankfully I had a couple of tubes of nuun Active Hydration in the bag. I think that my friend put it best when he said that they “saved my life today”. Maybe that's a bit dramatic, but the nuun Active Hydration really hit the hydration spot. There will definitely be a tube of tabs in my bag every round this summer.

So what's the nuun All Day formula all about?

While the nuun Active Hydration drink tabs are about keeping you hydrated during vigorous activities, the nuun All Day version is more for day-to-day use. In comparing the ingredients, the All Day version includes significantly less sodium and potassium than the Active Hydration version. This makes sense, as the sodium and potassium included in the Active Hydration are there to replace what you are actively sweating out. Perhaps you have “big sweating” job, but if you don't, your sodium and potassium levels are likely just fine. (Remember, I'm not a doctor. Go see yours if you are worried about this stuff. Probably not a good idea to replace your primary care physician with reading a golf blog anyway...)

So the nuun All Day is lower in the electrolytes, but it makes up for it in vitamins. Here is the total ingredient list from the nuun site:

Again, I am not a doctor, or even a nutritionist, but for some reason I have the crazy idea that vitamin supplements can be an important part of one's healthy diet. If you check the nuun site, the nuun All Day formula is promoted as a way to stay hydrated All Day. By staying hydrated, you then stay “healthy, energized, and focused” without the “rollercoaster” of sugary and caffeinated drinks. That sounds like a good plan, although I didn't notice a “coffee” flavored nuun tab.

Taste o' the Tabs

We have all had to drink or eat something that is “good for us”. That whole Mikey/Life cereal campaign was based on that fact. Let's be honest, if it tastes gross, you are not going to keep drinking it. Unless you are one of those wheat grassers, and then I really don't get you. The nuun All Day flavors looked promising: Tangerine/Lime, Grapefruit/Orange, Blueberry/Pomegranate, and Grape/Raspberry. Taste is, of course, subjective. Even so, here is my preference from first to fourth:

  1. Grapefruit/Orange
  2. Tangerine/Lime
  3. Blueberry/Pomegranate
  4. Grape/Raspberry

tubes2.jpg

This was unexpected, as I am not a fan of grapefruits, tangerines, or pomegranates. To be fair, I don't like pomegranates because it's a silly name that is too hard to spell and type. Grapefruits and tangerines classify as "yucky" for this golfspy though. But for you, dear reader, I tasted them all, fully expecting grape to win. Didn't work out that way. I love grape beverages, but this one was just not as good as the others. Do the taste test yourself to know for sure. For me though, the citrus flavors were the clear winners.

Try It Out

The nuun All Day formula is a bit tougher to recommend with the same enthusiasm as the nuun Active Hydration. I feel confident in recommending nuun Active Hydration for the golf course; it has hot round cred with me. I have been adding the All Day to the water that I typically drink during my day job. It tastes good, and may help me to drink more fluids overall. If hydration is the key to the nuun claims, anything that motivates me to drink more should help the hydration equation. This may end up as a more long-term type of test. I'll let you know if I can replace the midday coffee with nuun All Day. Coffee flavor would help...

GREAT FLAVOR ALERT!!!

I have to share with you my new favorite nuun Active Hydration flavor, Strawberry Lemonade. This one was not part of the initial batch from nuun, I tasted it at the nuun booth at a local golf expo. It is by far my favorite. The fact that nuun donates 50¢ from each sale to Susan G. Komen for the Cure is just a bonus. Check this one out for sure! For me, it has become indispensable.

I would say it is a good mix in. Alternate nuun/beer/nuun. Unless you are drinking MIller 64, my new favorite beer-flavored sparkling water B)

As a lifelong cyclist, I will swear by the various 'add to water' tabs for added nutrients. Vitamins, electrolytes and even salt are absolutely essential to performing your best. This isn't a brand that I have used personally, but after this mention and looking at the ingredient list, I am going to add them to my 'try' list. As it is, I carry a bicycle style insulated water bottle with me in my bag every round, and I will fill it in the clubhouse, and most rounds refill it 2-3 times while out on the course from the water coolers. Dropping a tab into that water makes the water taste better, and provides the extra nutrients.

It is really alarming how much hydration and nutrition fluctuations will impact your performance, regardless of the sport or activity.

When I was racing (bicycles of course) I stuck with Cytomax. When added to water, it kept me from getting leg cramps.  I coached a team of 9 cyclists on their first Cross Florida Race 1993 and nobody cramped except for one guy that got tired of the taste.  He cramped about 5 miles before the finish.  It was a 170 mile one day ride!

Last weekened, on my 4 day Buddy Trip with 94* heat and double rounds on Friday & Saturday, I experienced my first heat exhaustion in over twenty years, even though i drank several gatorades and plenty of water.  It's gonna be a hot one this summer, so i am actively looking for a "Hydration Additive".

Thanks Dave, I just may give nuun a try.

Picked up the active hydration tabs before my round today and they are great. One on the front 9 and one on the back and I was fine all day which is great considering it was low 90's and humid. Definitely a must have in the golf bag.
