Popular Post mpatrickriley
I figured that, since I pulled the trigger on the Father's Day discount on a Mevo+, I needed to start this thread as a parallel to my SkyTrak thread. (If anyone is wondering, I am selling the SkyTrak. I'd rather sell here than eBay, so shoot me an offer!) Why am I making this move? The biggest reason is that the Mevo+ offers the flexibility of use indoor and outdoor (the SkyTrak struggles in direct sunlight, which I experienced firsthand this spring). Our garage is big enough (I'm nearly certain) to allow the Mevo+ to work inside; the space needed for the Mevo+ inside is the biggest knock on it. But over the next few months, I'll update this thread with my thoughts on the Mevo+, especially compared to the SkyTrak (since they're about the same price point). Currently, UPS is showing a delivery date of next Wednesday, so I'll be burning up my F5 button until the brown truck arrives. If you have any particular questions about either device, post it! I've had two years with my SkyTrak, so I think I've got a good handle on that LM. Also, a bit of a BST note here: if anyone has an older (but not too old) iPad or iPhone that's no longer needed, shoot me a DM. It has to be an iPhone 8 or an iPad 5th gen (both of which were released in 2017; or newer, but I'm looking for cheap, not awesome). The Mevo+ includes the option of playing sim golf on iOS, but I'm an Android diehard. M. mpatrickriley
Just now, THEZIPR23 said: Anything other than the outdoor use prompting the change? That's really the biggest factor: the ability to have a small device (the Mevo can fit in a bag) that I could take the course really appeals to me. This is especially since I cannot swing a driver in my garage. Driving is easily the weakest part of my game, and I'm hoping to be able to get some intelligent feedback on it with the Mevo. Another consideration is the ability to play sim rounds without additional fees (though it does require the purchase of a new iDevice for me). I really have no complaints with the SkyTrak. I know there are guys who have been less than thrilled with its performance measuring the highest speed shots, but since that's not my game (and I can't use it with driver anyway) that's never been an issue for me. 1 minute ago, GolfSpy_TCG said: If you somehow have some overlap, @GolfSpy MPR, would love to see comparison data from the same 'good' strikes! The short answer is spin axis/direction. It makes it possible for me to hit balls indoors during the winter and know roughly where they ended up, both in distance and direction. The regular Mevo is great for measuring swing speeds, ball speeds and distance. But it doesn't show anything in terms of horizontal movement. So I could pound balls for hours hitting cuts or draws and never really know. In the past I drove an hour round trip once a week to use a heated range where I could see flight. But I'm not going to do that this upcoming winter. cnosil, JohnSmalls, tommc23 and 3 others 6 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. mpatrickriley
Received my Mevo+ yesterday, but I haven't used it yet. This was no act of discipline on my part: my wife had taken Kirke to Drive, Chip, and Putt, and so I had three of our children to keep alive. It didn't seem like the best time to set up a new launch monitor. I'm hoping to get it set up this afternoon and do a little garage practice before league this evening. If all goes well, I should be able to do some side-by-side comps with the SkyTrak on Saturday. I'm thinking 5–7 shots from partial wedge, PW, 7, 5, and hybrid. I'll plan to keep every shot that both devices read, no matter how awful (reading bad shots accurately is also important on an LM). I'll also record how many missed shots each device has. sirchunksalot, THEZIPR23, edingc and 3 others 6 Quote TS3 9.5°, Tensei Blue CBX E722 16.5°, Tensei AV RAW Blue 65 S Epic Super Hybrid 19°, Aerotech Steel Fiber FC HYB S C722 22°, Ventus Blue 8S CBX Iron-Wood 25°, Project X HZRDUS Black 6.0 Epic Forged 7 27° 639 CB, Aldila NV 95 Graphite, 7–PW Diamond Tour Inazone 3.0 50°, 54°, 58°, Aldila NV 95 Graphite DF3, Counterbalanced 37", TPT shaft, Garsen Quad Tour 17" Full WITB with pictures
Popular Post edingc
@GolfSpy MPR was gracious enough to let me join in on this thread, so I'll chime in with some initial thoughts as I received my Mevo+ yesterday afternoon as well. After getting everything opened and setup on my phone, I took the Mevo+ out to the backyard and hit about 35 chips/pitches on "indoor" mode since the ball flight window was so short. I was hitting at a driveway marker I had set at 20 yards. Every single shot Mevo+ recorded must have been within inches of accuracy. And the flight measurement was spot on based on the different types of trajectory I was trying. Very impressed. This morning, I brought the Mevo+ along with me to the course to use on the range before the round. I go out on the range before rounds and pick 20 or so balls to warm up with. I hit my 54 wedge, 7 iron, 4 hybrid and driver this morning and recorded the shots with the Mevo+. I think the accuracy of the Mevo+ is much improved over the regular Mevo, especially with the 54 wedge. It was chilly this morning (high 40s/low 50s) and the range balls had sat out all night. As I worked up to longer clubs I think my carry distances and ball speeds were a little off due to the cold range balls, but overall the shot shapes were spot on. There's a ton of data to go through and I'm only scratching the surface with my initial thoughts/use. But I'm very excited and definitely had a positive first impression. I think this thing could take my game to the next level if I can work it mindfully into my practice routine. Screenshot of the FS Golf app below. Popular Post mpatrickriley
First time hitting balls with my Mevo+ yesterday afternoon. Some very early thoughts: Moving back from my net, so that the Mevo+ has space to see ball flight, is not good if you have the occasional shank. Ahem. My garage isn't pretty; there's stuff (both yard equipment and kids toys) everywhere, including a running refrigerator to the side. None of this seemed to have a major impact on the Mevo+, which read 90%+ shots without issues. The issues it did have were with reading spin rates. I used a metallic dot, but got (maybe?) 50/50 actual reads on the spin versus estimated spins (when the numbers are reported in italics). The response times are sooo much faster than the SkyTrak. There's a well-known delay (about two seconds) with SkyTrak between impact and the time it starts reporting results. By contrast, as soon as my ball hits the net, my tablet was audibly announcing my carry distance. I never really minded the SkyTrak delay: it gave me time to corral my ball and then look at the screen to see what happened. With the Mevo, by the time I look at the screen, the shot animation is almost always already done. Early on, I'm liking the range graphics of SkyTrak much more than the Mevo+. Big actual data feature: the fact that Mevo measures (rather than estimates) clubhead speed is huge for me. SkyTrak only measures the ball speed, and it calculates club speed on the assumption of a good strike. Because Mevo is measuring club speed and ball speed, it can give an accurate smash number. This is big for measuring how well I'm striking the ball, even without using footspray. ejgaudette, Nolan220, JohnSmalls and 7 others 10 Quote TS3 9.5°, Tensei Blue CBX E722 16.5°, Tensei AV RAW Blue 65 S Epic Super Hybrid 19°, Aerotech Steel Fiber FC HYB S C722 22°, Ventus Blue 8S CBX Iron-Wood 25°, Project X HZRDUS Black 6.0 Epic Forged 7 27° 639 CB, Aldila NV 95 Graphite, 7–PW Diamond Tour Inazone 3.0 50°, 54°, 58°, Aldila NV 95 Graphite DF3, Counterbalanced 37", TPT shaft, Garsen Quad Tour 17" Full WITB with pictures
edingc
I can chime in some more after two full range sessions (probably about 100 balls): Mevo+ has recorded probably 97 percent of the shots I've taken. I had a few misses here or there, especially when I started letting the ball get too close to the unit due to my divot pattern. Like @GolfSpy MPR mentioned, the feedback is nearly instantaneous. The FS Golf App on Androids runs really smoothly. Ball flight tracer seems extremely accurate. As expected with awful range balls and no dots, spin readings are all over the place. (No fault of the Mevo+.) Club head speed measurement seems very accurate, probably more accurate than the regular Mevo, especially with driver. As can be expected with range balls, the carry distance and ball speeds are a little off. It's more noticeable once you get to the longer clubs, of course. As such, my smash factor is never that high. This, again, is no fault of the Mevo. The end of our range from where the tees are at is about 265 yards. Yesterday I hit the fence on the fly with a driver and Mevo recorded something in the high 250s. So pretty accurate. And, here is why I'm so excited about having the Mevo+ ... having directional feedback saved in the app is a great "gamification" of my range sessions. I've always been guilty of just mindlessly hitting range balls, or trying to hit balls as hard as possible with no real regard to direction (Sure, you remember your club and ball speed but don't remember it was 40 yards offline!). Having the dispersion tracking has already made a big difference in my focus while on the range. cnosil, golfish!, Nolan220 and 3 others 5 1 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. I used a metallic dot, but got (maybe?) 50/50 actual reads on the spin versus estimated spins (when the numbers are reported in italics I’ve been getting about a third estimated when hitting into my net, yes, with a metallic dot. Once almost three quarters. Oddly, at the range it almost always gets the spin. I’m going to do a session tomorrow comparing a couple balls to each other, so will be very careful to make sure the dot is set correctly. Curious what I’ll find out. I haven’t tried it yet, but the Awesome Golf has some interesting driving range and skills games - like hitting balls at objects like boats and buildings your son might like. It’s pricey but there is a free trial to see if you like it. Ive really liked mine. I’ve been using the video capture mode to send video with the numbers embedded to a new instructor I’m seeing. Since it’s a virtual/remote lesson it’s helpful for him to actually see the data too. My only real complaint is on battery life . edingc 1 Quote Walking ahead of my BagBoy QuadXL w Alphard eWheels Driver: Callaway Mavrik SubZero 9* Neutral w stock Evenflow Riptide R flex shaft 3W Titelist TS2 15* Draw w Tensei Blue R flex 3H, 4H Cobra One Length F9 Speedback hybrids (1”short) w Fujikura Atmos R flex shaft 5I-GW Cobra Forged TEC Black One Length (1”short, 2* flat) KBS 90 R flex shafts 56, 60 Cobra King MIM One Length Black (1” short) KBS HiRev2.0 125 S flex shafts ER7 or Scotty Futura X - 35” OnCore Elixr (lemon or lime)
WaffleHouseTour
@edingc when hitting range balls, do you even pay attention to spin rates, or is it a given that they will spin so much higher? Have you seen anything on average increase in spin between a range ball and a premium ball? using the Mevo+ on the range last night and I like my launch, AoA, club speed - but I’m spinning between 3,500 and 5,000, and I’ve got my weights set for lower spin on my Mav SubZero, so i wonder how much is me, and how much is the range ball… edingc 1 Quote Walking ahead of my BagBoy QuadXL w Alphard eWheels Driver: Callaway Mavrik SubZero 9* Neutral w stock Evenflow Riptide R flex shaft 3W Titelist TS2 15* Draw w Tensei Blue R flex 3H, 4H Cobra One Length F9 Speedback hybrids (1”short) w Fujikura Atmos R flex shaft 5I-GW Cobra Forged TEC Black One Length (1”short, 2* flat) KBS 90 R flex shafts 56, 60 Cobra King MIM One Length Black (1” short) KBS HiRev2.0 125 S flex shafts ER7 or Scotty Futura X - 35” OnCore Elixr (lemon or lime)

I've done some research into this in the past, and I'm copy/pasting something I put into another thread a while back: --------------------------- This is something I've actually spent way too much time looking into, and there's not a lot of information out there. Some useful sources: Practical Golf - HOW DO RANGE BALLS PERFORM VS. PREMIUM GOLF BALLS? https://practical-golf.com/range-golf-ball-versus-premium-ball/ Comparing a Snell MTB Black to a Pinnacle Practice ball and a Srixon Limited Distance practice ball, ball speed differences of 7-11 miles per hour were observed with the driver, and 4-7 MPH with 7 iron. There were non-negligible differences in launch angle and spin as well. Today's Golfer - Driving range ball vs premium golf ball https://www.todaysgolfer.co.uk/features/equipment-features/2018/may/tested-range-ball-vs-premium-ball/ Their test of a TP5X versus a range ball revealed some oddities. The range ball actually carried farther with a wedge in their test due to the considerably less spin rate. Moving to driver, the range ball was easily beaten by the TP5X, with a 6 MPH faster ball speed. Golf Digest - Stripe it! https://www.golfdigest.com/story/gd-tested-range-balls Their results comparing ProV1s and various range balls confirms that range balls are erratic in speed/distance from ball-to-ball, with some range balls equaling the carry of their premium counterparts while others fell ridiculously short. Additionally, there used to be a PDF from Srixon floating around on the Internet that compared their range balls to other brands. I have it saved and have copied/pasted Srixon's chart below: Assuming the "optimal" launch conditions for their driver and 5 iron tests, you can see that they would fall short of what would be expected distances. --------------------------- Safe to say range balls don't spin the same as regular balls. But I have no idea how to quantify it. I generally look at ball speeds and general flight on the range. But even ball speeds vary wildly from ball-to-ball. Anecdotally, yes, range balls spin quite a bit more than a premium ball. I know Practical Golf's results don't corroborate that, but I visibly launch range balls higher and with more spin. My Mevo says they are launching higher w more spin. When I hit my OnCore ball at home into a net Mevo says lower launch and spin - but of course I can’t see it and am completely dependent on that little yellow line…. I may just need to trust the Mevo - but I sure like seeing the ball fly edingc 1 Quote Walking ahead of my BagBoy QuadXL w Alphard eWheels Driver: Callaway Mavrik SubZero 9* Neutral w stock Evenflow Riptide R flex shaft 3W Titelist TS2 15* Draw w Tensei Blue R flex 3H, 4H Cobra One Length F9 Speedback hybrids (1”short) w Fujikura Atmos R flex shaft 5I-GW Cobra Forged TEC Black One Length (1”short, 2* flat) KBS 90 R flex shafts 56, 60 Cobra King MIM One Length Black (1” short) KBS HiRev2.0 125 S flex shafts ER7 or Scotty Futura X - 35” OnCore Elixr (lemon or lime)
edingc
Just received the following in an email from FlightScope: Having some competition in the space seems to be pushing them along. I'm not 100 percent sure what "Fusion Tracking" entails, but I know it's available on the X3 only right now. Some sort of integration with the built-in camera, though I'm not sure what exactly it provides. Still, can't complain about getting a new feature. Makes me wonder if they'll eventually offer more club statistics for either free or as an upcharge package. Especially if more affordable monitors continue to hit the market. cnosil 1 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B.
