Mizuno 223 Review

Hey Everyone,

I have not done this before but had to write this for anyone considering new irons.

I have always been a Japanese forged guy when it came to irons. So when it came time to upgrade from my Honma irons, Mizuno was my first thought.

Talking with my local golf club proshop (Templeton Golf Club) they signed me up for a Titleist fitting. Now to give you some context I injured my back 2 years ago and have had pain issues ever since. So I was looking for an iron that would give me playability as well as forgiveness, sounds simple right lol. I was fitted into the T100 with a 105 gram stiff shaft. Don't get me wrong these are an amazing iron, however they felt a lot firmer off the face than I was accustomed too. So I headed off to our local driving range and booked in with their club fitter, shout out to Jordon Latter. Jordon knows my swing well, so when I walked in he said you have two choices! T100 or Mizuno 223. With a 115 gram stiff Nippon NS Pro fitted into each iron, looking down on both irons they had a similar top line, with the face of the Mizuno being slightly longer. I was very surprised that both 7 irons went similar distances with a similar flight (160 meters carry) It all came down to aesthetics and feel. For me the Mizuno gave me more confidence at address with the larger head size. And lets be honest here I am no Cam Smith. So how would I rate the Mizuno 223? They feel is honestly like swinging a practice swing, you can hardly feel the ball fly off the club face. I have picked up about half a club in distance with a smooth tempo, and my dispersion has also decreased as well. Now I am currently playing to a 9 handicap, but am able to work the ball both ways. In this department the Mizuno can not be faulted, as well as having incredible forgiveness. However if you catch it thin you are going to know about it very quickly! So as you can probably imagine I would rate these irons a solid 10/10. This is one iron you can't look past if you're wanting workability, feel and forgiveness.

I am just now at the 1 year point w/ my Mizuno Pro 223 irons (4-PW) with Nippon NS Pro 1150gh Tour shafts (stiff).  These are, by far, the best irons I've ever used, and I loved my Yonex Super ADX Tour irons I had for years.  I have never had this kind of dispersion or distance control (without having to worry about rockets if I get 1 "just right" in the center).  The only irons out now that are close are the Callaway Apex TCBs, and those require a level of consistency I'm not sure I have in me with the challenges in getting practice time in that I'm facing right now.

  • Callaway Epic Flash Tour Certified - 8.5° with MCA Tensei Raw AV White 70 Gram Tour X - Tipped 1" - Set to N / -1
  • Callaway AiSmoke Triple Diamond - 15* 3-wood - Project X Denali 6.5 flex shaft - Set to N/S
  • Titleist TS2 Hybrid (18°) with MCA Tensei White AV 80X shaft - C1 setting
  • Taylormade P7MC (2020) Irons - 4-9 (Standard L/L) with Tour Issue X100 Shafts at +5/8"
  • Taylormade MG4 48.09SB TI X100 and 52.09SB / 56.12SB / 60.07LBV wedges with DG TI Onyx Black X100 Shafts at +5/8"
  • Golf Pride ZGRIP Plus2 on irons and wedges (plus fairway) / Lamkin ST Hybrid Midsize on Driver / Hybrid
  • Sik DW (2.0) C Series Putter in black finish (36") with Sik Golf Black Pistol
  • Balls: Mostly Maxfli Tour

I completely agree.

I had a good friend of mine who is a +5 handicap hit my 7 iron the other day and he was amazed at the feel and control that the 223 offers.
