Sub 70 Putters - 2023 Forum Review

Hey everyone, no updates from me unfortunately been sick the past week but on the mend now.

I had scheduled a visit to this new indoor golf training facility that opened up near me, but unfortunately I had to cancel. What really intrigued my about the facility, and for this review is the Puttview system they have setup. I've never seen this before in person, but it's a putting green with augmented reality projected onto it to show all sorts of stuff. Still hoping to get out there when I'm no longer contagious. 🤒

Sounds like we're posting final reviews this week so I'll start getting my thoughts together!

Still might have 1 or mayyyyybeeeee 2 more rounds next week. Mid 40's but no snow projected. @GolfSub70Sub70 004 mallet is pumping great actually. My last 9 holes had 16 putts, zero 3 putts putts/GIR were 2.00 and putts/hole was 1.78. My putting appears to be trending down a little which is a good thing.

Updated my review to be complete. Would like to say a big thank you to @GolfSub70 for the opportunity to test their putter. It is definitely going in the bag for now and replacing my Odyssey OG 7 putter. Sadly the weather has shut down golf in my area so I’ll have to wait till spring to get out and use the putter more. Definitely recommend giving their putters a good look if you are in the market for a new putter.

Final review is up! For the 008 Sub70 Mallet. HUGE thanks and shout outs to MyGolfSpy.com and @GolfSub70 for submitting their products to the testing fires! And a thank you as well to @GolfSpy_APH for his assistance in setting us up for success.

I can't thank you enough for this opportunity and I hope you enjoy the review!

FYI, I have posted my final review concerning the test review of SUB70 004 Mallet putters. A huge thank you to @GolfSub70 and MGS and especially @GolfSpy_APH. I certainly learned some tricks and had a lot of fun while doing it. Folks, this putter is well worth looking into. It is in my bag for sure.

I just read all the reviews for these putters. Great job testers! Very cool that you all are seemingly putting the Sub 70's in your bags! I recently purchased the a Sub70 AL-6 armlock putter and gave it similar scores to all of your putters in my Unofficial review. The value for quality is almost off the charts. I think the only putter that MIGHT kick the AL-6 out of my bag is L.A.B. putter.

Thanks! I got out last week and got in 27 more holes. Had 35 putts in 18 and then 18 on 9. Putts were not falling for me but I felt like I’ve been struggling to read greens lately so I’m am putting it more on me than the putter. Really like the quality of the putter though. Definitely with you on these LAB putters peaking my interest.

Lots of high praise for these putters (not that I am all that surprised). Wanted to see if the testers felt the shaft upgrade or what was the main standout feature of these putters for you?

Great question. For me I feel that it is mostly in the putter head. The extra weight, the milled face, and the contrasting black and white make it easy to use for alignment. I did get the combo shaft on this build which enhanced the feel of the weight on the putting stroke. But yeah if it’s one thing I would say it’s the heavier putter head personally.

I completely agree. I have a 002 Mid-Mallet and it's definitely heavier than my old Carbite Golf DD (same mid-mallet shape). I don't have to swing as hard to get the ball to go as far as I need thanks to that extra weight. Sadly my model doesn't have adjustable weights, but it's doing fine anyway. At least until a LAB finds it's way to my house. 🙂

They didn’t have the shaft upgrade available for me in the shaft I needed so I was unfortunately unable to try the upgraded shaft. Main standout to me is the customization of the weight in the head. I’m still messing around with the weights to see what I like.

For me I would say 50/50. Yes the shaft upgrade was cool and yes I could tell the feel difference between my old stand by and my new "in the bag" Sub 70 004. The other 50 was definitely the quality of their milling. Top notch. @GolfSub70 has a winner there.

Set aside some time recently to use the PuttView system with my Sub 70 Sycamore 009 Mini… against a challenger, a Cobra Vintage Sport 60 blade.

Configured the PuttView to do nine random 3-5 putts around the green with contour lines and ball setup lines turned on. Did two rounds each with both putters, and a bonus 6-8ft round.

So now for the results:

  • 009 Mini
    • 3-5ft Putts:
      • 1st round: 7/9
      • 2nd round: 7/9
      • Totals: 14/18 (77%)
    • 6-8ft Putts:
      • 1st round: 5/9 (56%)
    • Overall: 19/27 (70%)
  • Vintage Sport 60
    • 3-5ft Putts:
      • 1st round: 6/9
      • 2nd round: 5/9
      • Totals: 11/18 (61%)
    • 6-8ft Putts:
      • 1st round: 5/9 (56%)
    • Overall: 16/27 (59%)

Really enjoying the PuttView system, and plan to keep these challenges going. Have some tweaks I want to make to the blade and try again (length/grip), but the Sub 70 remains victorious!

I had never heard of it before visiting them, but once I got use it I was sold. I believe @cksurfdude mentioned this elsewhere, but Rick Shiels did a video on it as part of his new golf studio:

Edit: Does not have the crazy Zen base like him, the slopes on the green are static (blocks of cnced foam).

Man, it's been over 12 weeks since I've been able to roll any real putts on real grass. Sure hope that little fur ball doesn't see his/her shadow tomorrow. Been rolling putts on the putting mat. Do what you have to do. Can only go out to 9 feet plus or minus 6 inches. Gives me a false sense of security due to the lack of worm holes, odd ball cuts, grain relief, and any other influences that occur. But I have been able to count on mat consistency to help refine the weight distribution on the Sub70 004 Mallet I tested.  I have continued to roll putts using the @GolfSub70 about 7% better than my previous putter. As I mentioned in my final report I was going to work on refining the weight distribution. Currently my heel is 5 grams less that the toe weight. That has resulted in a 6% reduction of left side misses. Small but still an improvement. Hopefully soon I'll be able to get back on grass and see if that really works there too.

@Dweed you inspired me to finally mess with the weights on the putter! I’ve swapped out the stock 15s for the lightest 5s.

Was liking how it was feeling at practice, but probably too early to tell. The lighter head seemed to translate to less speed off the face. Did a ladder drill of 6 putts, 2-10ft, having to make each before moving to the longer putt. Did this drill a few times and managed to get it done in 9 putts, 10 putts, and then 9 putts again. Struggling only on the 8 and 10ft putts on the ladder.

Did 18 random putts from 5-8ft after and went 10/18. Leaving some short and burning the hole on others, but pretty happy with all my misses as they were easy cleanup putts.

Plan to take the putter out in the lighter configuration this weekend, and plan to do more testing soon!

So... first real test of swapping to 5 gram weights was a putting disaster 😅

Things were not going well, and after a few holes I just didn't feel comfortable over the ball anymore. Face control seemed to be a bit all over the place, and I've apparently forgotten how to read putts. Still had fun out there and missed being outside again, but definitely need to step up my practice.

I have been practicing indoors on the PuttView (which is an awesome system), but with all the aides/alignment enabled I feel like I've been practicing with the training wheels on for the past couple months. In my future practice, I need to disable some of these aides/alignments and hone my own ability to read a putt. Secondly, I need to spend time on setup and starting on my line, looking into drills/aides for this.

I’ll be honest, I was hit or miss initially with my 004 putter. I have since swapped the grip to a Garsen Quad Tour and changed the weights to the dual 20g and I love this putter now. I’m glad the testing has worked out well for everyone else in this thread.

It is with a heavy heart that I bring you this bad news... my Sub 70 Sycamore 009 Mini, has been ousted from its spot in the bag by a challenger: a Cobra blade putter. Despite it's faithful service and aiding me in reducing my handicap, recent practice with the Putting Thing trainer has exposed consistent issues with starting the ball to the right. Seeking confirmation, I also tested with PuttOut Devilballs, only to find that I struggled to roll them straight with the 009 Mini, whereas the Cobra blade felt more effortless. In pursuit of a more consistent putting stroke and setup, I've made the difficult decision to shelve the 009 Mini in favor of the Cobra blade for the time being.

Rest assured that the 009 Mini is not forgotten; I am determined to continue tinkering, aiming for a straighter roll. My first adjustment will involve shortening it down to 34" or shorter, as I find myself choking down to the bottom of the grip in my closer stance. Additionally, I'm puzzled by the fact that I find it easier to square the face with a putter that has 60° of toe-hang compared to one with only approximately 20° of toe-hang. 🤔

Interesting. I can’t wait to get out and do some more putting soon. We still have snow on the ground.

I got out last week a couple times and played 27 holes. Used the sub70 putter and confirmed my confidence in it from testing. My 18 hole round I shot a 86 with 29 putts (my misses were small and was making 7-10 ft putts). My 9 hole round I shot personal best 37 (+2) on 9 and had 15 putts. Greens were faster that day and putting went well. Had a 3 putt but that was user more than the putter. Nearly sank a 30 foot birdie.
