Used Golf Ball Math

Recommended Posts

Not sure why this doesn't make sense to me, guess I'm just a little numbers crazy.  Before the other discussion starts - refurb v. used (I will not buy refurb'd but have no problem with used), tell me what you think of this math:

Yes, it is a 2021 ball v. a 2023 ball, but Near Mint is Near Mint.  Why buy 4 dozen for $100 when you can buy 5 dozen for $100?  That much difference between a 2021 and a 2023 ball?

I'd wager this has more to do with the appearance of it being older stock than any kind of substantial quality difference.

There's also the argument of characteristics potentially changing as the ball ages, but I wouldn't have an idea on how significant that would be if at all if they weren't out baking in the sun or under water the whole time.

That is interesting math. Could even be a mistake on their end?

I dont imagine that big of a difference in performance. However I will say I do typically lean more towards DTC brands vs used.

Are they side by side pricing on the website. My guess is people know the prices of ProV1's and see 4 dozen for $100 and just hit purchase.

I used to buy used prior to all the DTC companies out there with great products and even better pricing.

Now, if I want to try out a certain brand, I typically just talk to the guys working at the course and scavenge their used bucket every few days.

Ive noticed this math before... I think sometimes if they do have "older" balls and alot of stock they will lower the prices. Ive gotten a few good deals on recent purchases that way but I think im going the DTC route this year as that Math isnt far off Near Mint used

Prices on these sites are highly dependent on demand, available inventory, and age. They have had approximately 3 years of collection for the 2021 model vs 1 year for the 2023 and the demand is generally higher for the current generation. Ultimately the material performance difference probably doesn’t warrant the price difference (granted Titleist has been making the ProV1 lower in both spin/apex over the past few cycles which some are not a fan of).

Wow, assuming no other difference but mfg. date, opting for the 2023 version/price doesn't sqaure even using "new math".  I have found a couple of used ball sources that tell me none of their offerings come from water hazards.  While I only have their word on that, I have picked up a couple of orders on AVX, 2021-2023 from them and have not noticed any performance issues compared to brand new and 2x+ the price.
