The personal questions:

What region do you play out of?

I come from Chipping Sodbury, a place just outside of Bristol in the United Kingdom where rainy weather was invented in 1056AD. We have this year had our second wettest winter since records began in 1853 at a whopping total of 1247.6mm of rain across the year.  The local courses have mostly been closed over winter, and the course that I marshal at (Woodlands Golf and Country Club in Bradley Stoke) has been victim to some of the boggiest conditions in the area.

there.png.e3218fc188605818336c11cb3484faf4.png

How long have you been golfing?

I have been golfing now for a little over two years.  I have found that my handicap is slowly on the way down from a horrible 40 or so over on each round to a record handicap of 23.1 (personal record anyway, nobody from the PGA has yet knocked on my door).  I have found that I have used winter to do scrambles where possible, and come summertime will be moving over to stroke play/match play games with friends and playing partners.  The winter golf has been a real challenge with the weather and ground conditions and I have dropped down to around a 28 handicap.

What kind of golfer are you?

An easy question to answer, a fairly average one.  I love playing early rounds, I love a good scramble game, and I really enjoy the atmosphere on the course.  I love to use gadgets and training tools to try to improve my skills, and have even found that some have translated to a better game on the course.  The best training aids I have are my putting mat, my Velcro chipping screen, and my hackmotion system that I tested for My Golf Spy last year.

The Golf Questions:

How do you want to test this product?

There are a couple of things I want to do with the wet weather gear.  The website claims the jacket is proof against rain, cold weather, and all weathers.  As I am a huge fan of early tee offs (just ask my playing partners), testing the temperature controlling capabilities of the coat shouldn’t be that hard.  Gallway Bay also claim that the coat’s “Fabric breathes to release excess body heat and sweat” which for a gentleman who has, shall we say a certain Rubenesque figure, should be able to test with ease (code for I’m a bit of a porkchop).  I also find that in the wetter weather I tend to end up chunking the ball and creating a mud spray the resembles the back end of a cow exploding.  This tends to end up all over my clothes, so I will definitely be able to see how easily the Gallway Bay Renvyle Rain Jacket and Chino Rain pants wipe clean of mud spray.

What are your plans for the review and comparisons?

So my existing coat is a Callaway rain coat.  It does a good job of keeping me dry, but I do find that I get a bit sweaty in there after a few holes.  I also find that my trousers end up really muddy when playing this season. In order to stay dry I sometimes have to resort to using a set of hi-vis waterproof trousers on the course which look so far out of place it’s embarrassing.

The coat I currently use is designed for golfers (obviously as it’s a Callaway one), and I look forward to seeing if there is any imposition on my swing in the Gallway Bay Renvyle Rain Jacket.  Being able to move freely is really important so will probably be one of the biggest factors of how much I like the coat.

What will make this product stay with you after testing?

Even before receiving the item, I think that unless it performs horribly, it will likely make it to most of my golf games where the weather may be looking rough, and to be fair from how it looks in the pictures it would probably serve as a pretty good light jacket for an evening walk.  As I said earlier, I live in England, we have almost nothing but rain for most of the year.

Why are you excited about testing this product?

I hate getting wet, and all coats I have tried to wear have left me feeling like a bag of steamed rice.  I hope that the Gallway Bay gear is able to make moist weather golfing more pleasant.

What do you know about the product already?

I have been salivating over this wet weather gear since I saw the test posted, it has amazing reviews, it looks really comfy, and the subtle colours look really classy.

What are your expectations?

The website makes a few claims that I will be looking forward to testing thoroughly.  Here is what the site says:

·         Waterproof and breathability rating of 30,000

·         Fabric breathes to release excess body heat and sweat

·         High collar to protect from wind and rain

·         Soft, quiet fabric

·         Waterproof sealed seams

·         Multiple secured pockets keep your things safe and dry

·         Wear on or off the course

The majority I have covered so far.  The only things that will be left to prove are the claim that the pockets will keep your belongings safe and dry (I’ll put a couple of tissues in there and see how they hold up), and that you can wear it on or off the course (I’ll upload pictures to see if it looks as good on me as it does on the pictures).

rainplay.jpg.d64d73c75918f492e9f15aabf9602eba.jpg

So, stay tuned folks, next post from me will be the unboxing, with some pictures of me wearing it so see how it looks on. (the orange coat is an older one, not the Callaway coat mentioned in the intro)

Hi, everyone, I am Randall Robbins, currently living/playing out of Middleburg, FL, which is just outside of Jacksonville.  I have been playing for 58 years now, just turning 70.  We get quite a few coastal showers, plus some good soak ers which will allow me to put the suit through some good conditions.

Mornings can be cool and misty into May, so I might get a chance to see how the suit works in those conditions as well as when it becomes humid to see how well it breathes to not trap moisture.Additionally, after some of these rains the fairways are sloppy, so the pants will be welcome to keep my regular pants clean and dry.

I will test this outfit in rainy and also wind to see how it does.  Should I get a stretch where we don't get rain, then I will resort to the sprinkler/hose/shower method.

Fit, looks and ability to swing comfortably will be evaluated and reported on.

Finally, my current suit is a 10 year old  Walter Hagen suit, so it will be interesting to compare old vs new to see what improvements have been made.

Once again thanks for the chance to do this test/evaluation.  Looking forward to getting started!

Ok, here is a photo!20240412_115528.jpg.36d25b5c9f9c3bf245e5012495cbb00a.jpg

The suit has arrived!  Here are my first impressions after arrival.

The items were shipped in a standard brown box, which , upon opening, I found both the jacket and pants to be well packaged in individual bags.

Upon removing the items from the packaging I found them to be very lightweight, and with a very silky finish to the fabric.  This likely will make the suit pretty quiet when in use, as I will see.

The suit does appear to be very well made, with seams all sealed, and the zippers close up well.  The sleeves have Velcro closures on the wrists to allow for a tight fit and keep the elements out.  The jacket zipper even has 2 Velcro closures to further help seal it. The jacket has a pair of slash pockets, and one chest pocket, all zippered.

The pants have 2 slash pockets and a watch pocket, plus a two button fastening system - one button on the outside, as normal, and a button on the inside as well.  They also have belt loops to be allowed to wear as regular pants.,

I slipped on both items and found the pants to be well fitting and lightweight as I said before.  I noticed that since they are made to your waist size, they fit precisely, but if you put them on over your pants, you would have to remove the belt, otherwise you can't button the pants.  They will button if your pants underneath do not have a belt; of course, you can order a size up to accommodate wearing pants underneath with a belt.

I found the jacket to be a little snug, even being an XL.  However, since these are made with 10% spandex, they do flex a bit and would allow for you to still make good swings.  Don't think I could wear this if the day was cool and I had on a sweater or vest. But, to be fair, I would likely take off the sweater, since the jacket with it's lining tends to keep me quite warm.

That is my initial impression, will report more this next week, as it is supposed to rain on Monday, so I hopefully will get immediate performance data.IMG_20240419_130345.jpg.f83e90c2f719cc32bbea36fd9a0d4e88.jpgIMG_20240419_130420.jpg.394facd9bf72277a667c7af995813ce8.jpgIMG_20240419_130558.jpg.f76902341f88628f6ce7f8cf73b731fd.jpgIMG_20240419_132551.jpg.7349f93ae98bb78124b228f821a82d7a.jpgIMG_20240419_132650.jpg.04bdb28efd02960abe2d48e5cee4fc7d.jpgIMG_20240425_090507.jpg.3a3bcfd5f245622891bb52f47b883000.jpgIMG_20240425_090411.jpg.4c6412c05538a9676dda0f3696ac3330.jpg

4/22/24

Ok, no rain as predicted, but it was a cool (56 degrees) damp and slightly breezy morning, so it was a good chance to see how the jacket performs both as a windbreaker and under playing conditions.

As far as working as a windbreaker, it was great!  Couldn't feel any effects of wind, no chill, nothing.  Kept me warm until temps rose and I took it off.  I can see that in cooler weather, if I wore just my thermal shirt under the jacket, as I would be extremely warm.

The jacket moved very well with me, allowing for a full swing with no restrictions.  Also, I found it to be virtually noise less  as I made swings or moved around.

Next I intend to wear the pants as golf pants on Wednesday to see how comfortable they are and how they perform.  Stay tuned!

4/25/2024:

Wore the pants just as regular golf pants, and they were great!  Can't believe the comfort, quietness of the fabric, and the overall quality of the pants.  The pockets are very deep, but easy to get in and out of for tees, markers and my scorecard holder.  My playing partner was impressed with the look and feel of the fabric.

The cloth does breathe very well, as it was a sunny day with temperatures in the mid seventies, but I never felt hot in the pants even though I sweat a lot - on days like this, with the vinyl seats on the cart, my pants will be soaked.  In this case, only my underwear was damp, but not uncomfortable.

One other aspect of the pants and greatly appreciated was that they have a zipper front. This of course is quite handy when nature calls, as it will with as much liquid as I drink during a round.  At least you don't have to pull them down like other rain pants I've had in the past.

Just wanted to mention that after the last pictures were taken, I went in the yard with the sprinklers on to get a quick read on how they reacted to a quick shower.  The water beaded up well, and I was very dry.  Good first check, but I really want some rain!  (Never thought that I would ever say that)

4/27/24

Had a surprise coastal shower this morning, so I took the opportunity to walk around in it with the jacket.  Rain just slid off or beaded up no penetration at all.  Once I came out of the shower, I simply shook out the jacket and it was dry to the touch.  This is really good stuff!IMG_20240427_110137.jpg.5600eb2e8518885e74d5b38ea0136da4.jpgIMG_20240427_110044.jpg.fa85dcaddfcf6a23a4955ade7b2e60d4.jpg

5/15/24

Had rain last Friday during round and then again today after the round:  today's was much more intense, so I walked out in it to check out performance in a pouring rain, and I stayed bone dry,  Just shook off the jacket to dry it out and ready to go again!

Also, I had kept the jacket folded up in the bag.  Pulled it out the other day to see how it did as far as wrinkles.  Just gave it a good shake, and there were next to no wrinkles.  Had also kept the pants folded up in the car trunk for the same reason, and once again a simple shake out and I had no wrinkles to speak of.  Photos below demonstrate the storage and the results.

FINAL REVIEW  05/30/24

First impressions:      10/10

Upon getting the box with suit and  unpacking it, I was quite impressed with look and feel of the suit.  It was well packed in plastic in the box,  and as I said, the look and feel was very nice.  The suit has a nice sheen to it, and a satin like feel, with a very tight weave to the fabric.  Everything about it on first look says quality product.IMG_20240419_130345.jpg.f83e90c2f719cc32bbea36fd9a0d4e88.jpgIMG_20240419_130420.jpg.394facd9bf72277a667c7af995813ce8.jpgIMG_20240419_130558.jpg.f76902341f88628f6ce7f8cf73b731fd.jpg

The color is very soft, not a brilliant blue, but more of a muted blue;  the only other color option was black at this time.

Aesthetics:        10/10

As I mentioned, the color and overall look of this suit were very appealing.  The multiple pockets on the jacket are very nice and roomy,  and the chest pocket to keep your scorecard in is easily accessible.  The zipper is very smooth and seals the front nicely.  It is cracked up by Velcro tabs on the inside of the flap to really seal out the elements.  The sleeves have an adjustable Velcro tab to make them as tight as you want on your wrists..

The pants also have very deep slash pockets and a small watch type pocket that you can use for tees/markers.  It has very sturdy belt loops, and a zip front which is handy, of course, when nature calls.  The pants are closed by a button that is well secured to the fabric, so no fears of tearing or breaking.

Fit/Comfort:     18/20

Upon trying on the suit, I found that the jacket had a snug fit around the chest/abdomen area, even though I had ordered an XL to ensure roominess.  However, once I took swings, this did not pose a problem because of the spandex included in the fabric make up.  The pants fit very well, as they were ordered to my exact pant size.  However,if you would want to wear them over your golf pants, you should take off your belt to get a better fit and use the belt on the rain pants.

The outfit was comfortable to wear, and did seem quite breathable.  I wore the jacket on a cooler morning, and I did not overheat while wearing it, and it did a great job of blocking out the breeze and the morning mist.

Likewise, I wore the pants alone as regular golf pants, and they were as comfortable as any other pants I have.  They also repelled the early morning dew that with normal pants soaks the cuffs and lower leg.

IMG_20240425_090411.jpg.4c6412c05538a9676dda0f3696ac3330.jpgIMG_20240425_090507.jpg.3a3bcfd5f245622891bb52f47b883000.jpg

On The Course:      20/20

Don't know what more you could ask from a rain suit - it definitely performed as advertised, keeping out wind and rain, while allowing me to make normal swings, and being very breathable, so that I didn't feel like I had just gotten out of a sauna.  Got very nice comments from playing companions, and when other weather items like caps gloves and shoes were added, I was a weather proof player!

When I did get to play in the rain, and even when I went out in my yard with the sprinklers on, the water just beaded up and shed off. In fact, it shed off so quickly that you have look closely at my photos to see the remaining water beads. After the rain, a simple shake out and the items were ready to be stored away.

Speaking of storage, I wanted to see how the suit looked after a week or so in my bag or the car trunk.  They were stored as I normally would, so nothing special was done.  When pulled out again, all it took was a little shake out, and there were little to no wrinkles.  This goes back to what I observed initially about the quality construction.

Good, Bad In-between:   20/20

Can't say enough about how impressed I was with all aspects of this product. It performed as advertised, looks nice, and has no effect on your swing and allows you to play on when conditions turn bad.  My only suggestions here would be a bit more room in the jacket and maybe some additional colors in the future.  Minor things, for sure.  While the price($600+) might not be for everyone, if you're in the market for a quality suit that will last for many years, then this is it.

Play or Trade:          20/20

Are you serious?  This is definitely a keeper!  Wouldn't give this up now after trying it out.  A real quality piece of equipment.

Conclusion:

This is one outstanding rain suit, one that met everything I and Mother Nature threw at it.  I continue to be impressed with the quality and performance of this rain gear.  I know it will be in my bag for years to come. I in my 55+ years of playing, haven't seen anything better, and it sure beats getting soaked if you don't have it, or having to quit because of bad weather.  Plus, the jacket can be used on windy days, or just as a regular jacket.  The pants can be worn as regular pants, or worn on a day when the course is sloppy and would mess up a regular pair of pants.

I want to thank My Golf Spy and Galway Bay for this fabulous opportunity to test this rain suit.  I will be happy to respond to any questions you might have.

FINAL SCORE:       98/100 (yes it's that good!)

hello all I’m Bryan (aka ChaosReigns) and I’m an addict. It all started when I was 10, My father left a little white ball laying out next to a shiny metal thing that soon turned into a broken window in the front room and me blaming the dog. Now I have to chase the feeling pretty much all the time and drive my wife nuts in the process.

Fast forward 37 years and here I am. I grew up in the Tampa Bay Area of FL where we were no stranger to afternoon thunderstorms that you can set your watch by. I now have resided in the ENC (Eastern North Carolina) for the past 4 years and the weather is almost the same, same humidity same storms same mosquitoes. I love the game rain or shine and am that crazy old fool that you see walking the course in a downpour.

I have had and used some rain protection in the past and in all honesty most of the time i removed it due to the constriction feeling from to many layers. I have done some of my own research on Galway Bay and I will honestly admit I am intrigued and truly plan to put this product to the fullest test I can. I will give my honest no bs assessment for this product and will answer any questions anyone has. Except winning power ball numbers I’m not allowed to share those.

Final review

well it’s the end of the testing phase and while it’s been a fun test it has also been a pain in the weather department. The really good rainy days have been mostly while I’m working or overnight while I’m sleeping. There was a few days of rain that I actually got to get outback and get video of and y’all got to see some horrible chipping from me lol. Thank you to my wife for holding the camera when needed and letting me golf (though I think that was just to get me out of the house lol) she really is an amazing woman.

First impression

when the package came it was a simple box very nondescript and shipping was fast so win win.
Inside the box was two separate bags with the pants in one and the jacket in the other.
After opening them I first noticed the light weight material and the double stitching with cover over on the inside, that Galway Bay logo stood out as well on both the jacket and the pants.

Quality and fit

Once I put the suit on I could immediately feel the material was of very good quality, it was light weight and fit perfectly, the whole suit allows a breeze to come through and in the rain it almost seem cooler inside it. The jacket is the first one I have worn that isn’t restrictive in the swing dept and the pockets are large and can store cellphones or your ranger finder without a hindrance of bulkiness. the pants didn’t ride up when kneeling down or bending down to get the ball and they even accommodated my knee brace that I wear on a daily basis, again win win. The pockets on the pants are like the jacket are perfect. They fit my cellphone in the front left, extra ball in my front right and glove in the back (either one depending) and on the front of the pants by the right pocket is a small ball marker pocket kind of like a typical change pocket on a pair of jeans. I use that pocket for my ball marker and a marble my oldest kids gave me over 20 years ago that I carry with me every day.

Wet vs Dry

I have worn the suit on both dry and wet days and I’m impressed with both. On a spring day with warm weather it was still good. I felt the breeze of the afternoon come through the pants and the sun didn’t get them overly hot and best of all no swamp a$$ after the round. The weather that day was not jacket weather lol.
On a rainy day all I can say is it’s amazing. The suit just feels comfortable and the rain just rolls right off. The light weight material allows the breeze to come through, though I do wonder if during the fall the suit will keep me warm but only time will tell.  After coming inside the suit was perfect, just one good shake and the water was gone (and instead all over the walls like my dog just got a bath lol) so it’s a hang up and move on. I recently put them through the washer and the wife and I laughed at the fact it’s water proof and was quite unsure how this would go but alas it’s clean and dry. (Perfect)

My thoughts 💭

The suit is just over all amazing. It fits perfectly and can store in my golf bag for the just in case days. My golfing buddies all love the color and those closest to my size say the jacket fits like a glove. This is the first real rain suit that I’ve had that I truly like. I love the fact it’s feels like a normal pair of pants and just a windbreaker and really love the way it has changed the weather lol, it’s almost as if the rain is scared of it. Which is sad because I have never wanted to play in the rain more than now lol. I’m not a brand ambassador but on this I will say “It’s worth the buy, if you love to play rain or shine then you won’t be disappointed”.

My Scores

Quality 10/10

Fit           12/10

Wet          10/10

Dry           10/10

Overall   100/100

i give the extra points on this because it’s just a great suit. I am appreciative of the fact I was chosen to test this product and as the first thing I’ve ever tested and review I really hope I did well enough that people will truly give the product a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

I would also like to thank @GolfSpy_APH for helping and answering questions.

Introduction:

My name is Mike and I have been addicted to the outdoors my entire life. I am 54 years old. 49 of those years in Vero Beach Florida. I am lucky to be married to a wonderfully understanding woman for nearly 30 years. I started playing golf 1986 while working at a restaurant "Charlie Brown's". The wait staff had started a Superbowl golf outing and invited the kitchen help. How hard could it be to hit a ball that is sitting still!!!!! We put together a foursome and borrowed 2 sets of clubs. That was my first taste of this beautifully sadomasochistic game. We stunk the place up! THIRTY-EIGHT years later, I now run this golf outing and we still have 10 foursomes! I currently play to an 8.5 index. I'm a mudder! I don't know why but, I play better in inclement weather. I love to play in the wind, the stronger the better. Outside of golf, I am an avid tournament bass fisherman. I fish 3 "trails" and split my time with golf. I really wish I could find a fishing/golfing tournament; I'd be in heaven.

Here goes the funny part for this testing opportunity. My chosen profession, you guessed it, I'm an Irrigation contractor for the past 26 years. I can say I intimately know water and not just the golf course. I wear rainwear at a minimum of 2 times per week for work and carry 3 rain jackets in my truck. I have tried numerous name brand rain jackets for work, none of them withstand a rotor blasting at 65 psi. While fishing I wear HUK Gore-Tex bibs and jacket. The bibs work great, but the jacket leaves a lot to be desired. I expected more for the price.  I have always looked at GB, but never pulled the trigger as I thought they were made for colder climates. I am super interested to test this product and give my honest opinion of performance, style and breathability.  If anyone has any questions or thoughts on a test they would like to see, please let me know.  I'm off to work!

4/19:  Update:   I played a member guest today. I collected my 5th Hole-in-one! (It was with a "white box" Callaway Tour X) I drive to the house and see this nondescript box sitting at the door.  Hello Galway Bay. What a day!!

Unboxing:  This very mundane brown box that doesn't scream steal me off the doorstep. It's nice to not have all the logos smeared all over the box. The neatly folder suit was in individual Ziplock bags. I immediately noticed the lightness of the packages. 10 of 10

First impressions:  Upon opening the bags and eyeballing the suit. My initial thought was " this set reeks of quality".

The jacket- Super lightweight material was extremely soft and smooth to the touch. The zippers were easy to pull down but felt firm. It's kind of hard to explain but once again the word quality came to mind. The zipper flap had nice Velcro but the way it is stitched, I don't know that it needed it. The stitching was very tight, so tight I had to look very closely to make sure it was actual stitches.  The pants- Once again super lightweight and they look like slacks. I'd have trouble differentiating them out of my dress slacks area of the closet. The fabric stretches nicely and I like that they have the shirt holder rubber lining in the waistband. The only drawback for me is there are only 5 beltloops. Certainly not a deal breaker by any means, but I do prefer 6 to better keep the pants from drooping. 9.5/10

Initial try on-

I'd say the jacket sizes run a bit small. The sizing chart said 2xl. The mid-section is fine, the shoulder area is a little tighter than I thought it should be. Upon zipping the jacket up fully, the zipper really digs into my Adam's apple due to the neck size being a little smaller than a normal 2XL. None of this affected the fabric moving properly throughout a simulated swing. I felt little to no restraint as the jacket seem to stretch in all the right places. Jacket rating 8.5/10

The pants- Let's call them slacks. I have now been wearing these "slacks" for 3 hours. They are as comfortable as any pair of dress "slacks" I have ever owned. I have not adjusted any areas of my body, which is a constant fight with my Haggar and Izod slacks. I can actually feel the air movement in these. Which is begging for the question of "how the hell did they do this?". If these are even remotely waterproof, this is an absolute homerun! Noise level is not even remotely an issue. I would not hesitate to throw on a dress shirt and go to any 5-star restaurant. If I could give the "slacks" an eleven I would. 10/10

Super impressed so far. I look forward testing these against the elements. With little to no rainfall in the 10-day forecast, we will get creative.

Testers Announced!

image.png

Galway Bay recently released a new jacket and pants with an impressive 30,000 waterproof rating, double that of their previous rating. They claim that, despite this impressive improvement, the fabric remains breathable and comfortable and does not restrict movement during any round.

In  previous MyGolfSpy rain gear testing, Galway Bay performed well and been recognized for its value and quality. Their rain pant is notable because it does not go over existing pants but is meant to be worn on their own.

image.png

Straight From Galway Bay:

Galway Bay says: “We designed our Performance Outerwear to be versatile, comfortable, and fashionable. Galway Bay provides protection from the wind and rain while still allowing players to take an unrestricted swing.

“All Galway Bay jackets and pants are made from our proprietary fabric, Galway Bay Hydro-Flex 32. This breakthrough material is a three-layer fabric with double durable water repellent coating, including Teflon, that’s designed to not only keep water from getting in but to allow sweat to get out.”

Congratulations @gingerbeast87, @Randall Robbins, @ChaosReigns & @Mike10487! Your golf weather forecasts have flipped! 😆

Golf rain gear is something that I haven't wanted to add to my necessities list, but when I need it I always regret not having the good stuff. Hope you all enjoy the test!
