Do any of you use a grip cleaner?

Recommended Posts

Have any of you used a grip cleaner on a regular basis? Geko has been marketing to me hardcore recently. My grips have been sweatier recently from the AZ heat and I’ve noticed my grips do get a bit grimier recently. I’ve cleaned them with dish soap and water every couple rounds, but wouldn’t be opposed to an quicker solution.

Nope on the grip cleaner. I also wash them every few rounds with dishwashing soap. That seems to do the trick even in hot sticky Florida weather. On the other hand I generally go through at least 5 pairs of gloves during 18 holes and they look pretty shabby since I sweat a lot. Even the new ones look pretty shabby after a couple of rounds. I’d wish there was a cleaning solution other than not wearing gloves

I do not.  I have used water to just get sunscreen off, but that’s about it.

Not much of an issue for me here in the Midwest. But I’d be nervous for any solvents other than soap and water.

FWIW after every round or work session, I’ll wipe down my grips and clubs with a water only towel. Grips first then club heads. Small amounts of maintenance each time is easier for me.

I actually came across some grip cleaner.  Now this particular grip cleaner was designed for pistol grips.  Many LEO's have some type of rubber over grip, over the plastic handle of their pistol.  We were cleaning, and were going to throw this stuff away..(nobody was sure  where it came from).  I took it home (thinking golf clubs!)  I used it up, but I found very little difference to what I normally use Windex or Fantastic!

For me dish soap seems to not clean as well, or is leaving a little residue behind given its thicker, more oily texture to begin with.  I have found no issue with either  "eating away" my grips.  Fantastic and Windex, both leave my CP2 tour rubber grips, nice and tacky feeling, which is what I want.

If I go on a golf trip, I keep a small spray bottle of it in my bag, in case one gets greasy from sunscreen etc.

I actually bought the Gecko cleaner. I guess all the ads worked in me. In fairness to myself, I was more interested if it would also work for cleaning my climbing shoes because the stuff I buy is so expensive.

I’d give it an 8/10. It seems to work pretty as advertised. The white towel that I used has black marks from something all over it now, if nothing else. But, ive found that If you use their method (just the cleaner and a towel), it cleans ok, but also leaves towel fibers everywhere and the grip doesn’t feel that great. Instead when I use a damp towel, it gets really clean—noticeably better than just water on its own, and about as good as a thorough soap and water cleaning.

I should add that I play without a glove so I’m pretty crazy about keeping the grips clean. I scrub them with a stiff nylon brush using soap and water about once a week. That technique has served me pretty well for years.

Somewhere in the ad though, they said that too much soap and water can dry out the rubber, which is another reason I grabbed this stuff. I guess I’ll see if it makes any difference over time.

I run corded grips and probably once a week I clean them. I play a lot on my sim and 2 different leagues. I have a scrub brush that's just a generic kitchen brush and a little dawn. Works amazing. Geko had been trying to get me too. It ain't worth the money and what they want for a brush that can only do one thing is ridiculous.

Get a grooveit and add a couple drops of dawn. Cleans shoes. Clubs. Grips. Bags. Fingernails.  Ketchup stains.

I should be golfing instead of talking smack on the web.

I too play in AZ all year and find I need to wash my grips every few weeks.  I think the trick is to use something that will cut oil/grease but not too caustic.

A neighbor told me he uses Purple-Power to clean the grips and irons.  It works great with a medium stiff nylon bristle brush, making the surface feel like new.

Dawn dish soap and water to clean using a bristle brush. Then a towel with just water on it for the rinse. Then another towel to tamp the grips dry.

I still have a bunch of Gripes that I'll use once a month or so on my grips. I don't think Lamkin makes them anymore, but they're quick and easy. Honestly, I think they're probably glorified baby wipes 😄 But they work, so...

I have looked into the GripCaddie that I keep seeing on socials and it looks like it is a quality product. I think @GolfSpy_APH is the one that has one, and if I remember correctly like the way it worked. It has a soap tube attached to a nearly 360⁰ brush

I have been using a whitewall tire cleaner (like black magic) for years. What I like about the tire cleaner product is that it restores the rubber condition as well as cleaning it. It’s not caustic but seems like it could irritate skin a bit so best to use a brush to apply and work it into the rubber. Grips are super tacky when done - I do it a couple of times per year or when obviously required.

All anyone needs is a liquid soap with water and a soft bristle tooth brush. You can clean club grooves at the same time. It brings out the tackiness in the grip making them feel new.

This is my normal routine and agree it works great, but as it’s been hot this summer it seems to be needed more frequently so I was hoping for something that was a quicker intermediate between full cleans like this.

Dawn, warm water, toothbrush works wonders here. Occasional Windex in between deeper cleans.

I went ahead and bought some Geko. It works pretty well and is easy to use. Two or three squirts of the solution on the grip, wipe it well and it becomes pretty tacky. I'm not sure if it works better than dishsoap and water, but it is easier.

I’ve seen Geko all over socials as well… saw another hack of cleaning grips with isopropyl alcohol. Tried it yesterday and that worked decently well.

I work in IT and I know that alcohol will dry out the pick up rollers/pads on printers and copy machines. They are also rubber so I'd be careful of using that on rubber grips as I would imagine it would have the same affect.
