Testers Announced: Newton Driver Shafts

The Newton Motion Driver Shaft

Hello My Golf Spy nation and all the ships at sea!
Thrilled to be selected as a Newton golf shaft tester.
I'm Joe, I live in Michigan with my wife and 2 black labs.

1000005664.jpg.6629286cb1295ac944e22900f6797fb0.jpg

I've got somewhere between a year and decade before I can retire and really prioritize golfing.  Very sporadic golfer while the kids were growing up.  Now that they're off the payroll, golfing has become quite the obsession. This year my game is improving towards a bogey golfer (usually with one blow up hole per round).

What am I looking for in the testing.  First, consistency, I want to be as repeatable on every swing as my ability allows. Second, I'm very interested in accuracy.  Just this year I've finally been able to dial my slice into a fade and regularly land in the fairway.  Lastly, any distance gains after would be great.

Over the past year, I've been buying all manner of used clubs to see how different clubs can help me improve.  I recently switched to some stiff flex shaft irons based on feedback from a big box fitting.  Currently I have a franken-bag collection of clubs, anything that I hit consistently well on the course is safe.

Can not wait to try a custom shaft on a known performing driver head.  I had not heard of Newton before, but I expect to be quite familiar with the product by the end of testing.  I'll be testing on the patio sim with my SC4 launch monitor, at the driving range and on the course.  I'll compare the Newton with the existing Stix Compete stiff flex shaft. I expect a company with a specific offering to have a well designed, great feeling product. We'll see how the speed, flex and torque works for me.  It's gonna be a great journey.

Player Intro:

Good Day Spies, my name is Tom Rossello and I live in sunny Orlando, FL.  I want to thank both MGS & Newton Golf for this testing opportunity! I'm really looking forward to it!
I'm married to my beautiful wife of 43 years tomorrow (10/10).  I've been playing golf for over 50 years, picking up the game at age 13, after our family moved from Long Island, NY to a little town - Phillipston, MA.  It was a culture shock.

About 30 years ago, I started taking the game a bit more seriously after playing more Client golf. I wasn't very good.  So I started taking lessons, practicing, and educating myself about equipment, including golf balls, grips & shafts. I spent a lot of time on the range (after a lesson) working on my game, reducing my handicap & getting down to a +2 handicap index at my peak in 2015.  I have a very supportive wife who also enjoys the game of golf, she doesn't play but has caddied for me in US Senior Open qualifiers.  Unfortunately, I've never qualified, I can't blame the caddy 🤣 but it is a great learning experience & helps me identify my deficiencies.

I really enjoy the game of golf, the walk, and friendships I love to tinker with equipment as well. My belief is, the golf shaft is the engine and getting the correct fit, whether it's with irons or woods, is a component of getting good results.  I play recreationally now and also work as a Ranger, at Ventura CC, my DREAM JOB! That affords me the ability to play more often and watch the public play golf.  It's really is a good learning experience & has been fun.

This summer I started using The Grint app to keep better track of my play - GIR, Fairways, Putts, Misses & Hazard shots.  It's been interesting. A thank you to MGS for opening my eyes & mind to using more technology.  I shoot in the mid 60's to mid 70's and I still think putting the weakest part of my game.  Although I can go on putting streaks. Tinkering there too! LOL

Which leads to the Driver:

I presently play Callaway Paradym X Driver & 3 wood.

IMG_1227.jpg.123aae642af67a675c82a3fd70e91c09.jpg

Here is a picture of my bag set up, including the NEW MyGolfSpy mallet putter head cover for my Scottie Cameron 5.5 putter.  Irons are Titleist T200 with Nippon Modus3 105-gram stiff shafts.  2 Rescue clubs: Callaway Apex set at 22 degrees with a UST Mamiya (I love Italian golf shafts) 75-gram stiff shaft & Titleist TS2 19 degree with a Tensei stiff shaft.
Since I predominately walk when playing golf and use a Bag Boy 4-wheel push cart, I find the cart bag to be the best fit on the push cart.

For the Paradym X Driver, I was fit with the Hzrdus Black Smoke 60-gram stiff shaft with 3.5 torque. The driver is set at 9.0 degrees with a draw bias. I do tinker at 10 degrees as well, but Florida has been too wet for a higher ball flight. A few months ago, a golf buddy and I traded driver shafts.  I have an old Callaway Subzero driver with a Project X, stiff shaft at 65 grams, which I traded for his Evenflow 50-gram 6.0 stiff shaft with 4.2 torque.  I like the lighter weight of the Evenflow shaft and do alternate between the two shafts. They do perform differently.  I can be more aggressive with the Hzrdus Black than the Evenflow shaft.

IMG_1224.jpg.98c8680dc4c39e88749ecb6c18d48067.jpg

I plan on testing both the Hzrdous Black & Evenflow shafts against the Newton Motion Shaft.  It will be a comparison, both on the course & at the range.  A nearby range recently installed Trackman.  Plus, I have a TheStack launch monitor.

Newton Golf Shafts are based on a Dot system - one dot for a slower swing speed up to 6 dots for the faster more powerful flat-bellied utes! I'm not flat-bellied nor a ute, 😂 so I'm expecting to go with the 4 Dot Motion Shaft - 60-gram shaft, 4.0 torque - 230 to  260 yd driving range.  I'm taking a page out of Jamie's book concerning the weight of the shaft. Plus, at my swing speed, it is in the 95 to 100 mph range, the four dots should be best suited for me.

About Newton Golf that impresses me:

  • American Made product
  • Seamless Shaft Design
  • Driver Shaft which matches your swing
  • Driver Shaft, which remains stable through impact (this reminds of the old Stulz Driver Shaft, which I still have in my Cleveland HiBore Driver. The stability claim by Newton Golf struck a cord.  So I'm not too concerned about the 5.0 torque
  • I'm expecting consistency with driving the ball.  I'm a good driver of the ball now.  My primary trajectory is slight draw, but I also like to fade the drive when necessary.  Both the Evenflow & Hzrdus allow me to do so.

There will be no doubt the Newton Motion Golf Shaft would remain in my bag, should it perform well.  I'm a feel player and if the Motion Golf Shaft feels & performs well, it stays on my Callaway Paradym X Driver.  I'm excited to see if the Newton Motion Driver Shaft helps elevate my game!

Thank you again MyGolfSpy & Newton Golf, this is going to be fun! ⛳

The Newton Motion Driver Shaft is designed for golfers seeking improved distance, stability, and control. Built using advanced materials and a proprietary design, this shaft enhances energy transfer while optimizing launch and spin. The shaft is engineered for stability during impact, helping golfers reduce dispersion and increase consistency off the tee. Newton claims the Motion Driver Shaft can provide a smooth, responsive feel that suits a wide range of swing types and speeds.

Key Features of the Motion Driver Shaft:

Optimized Energy Transfer: Designed to increase distance and launch with enhanced control.

Stability Through Impact: Reduces twisting at impact, leading to more accurate shots and less dispersion.

Custom Fitting: Each tester will receive a personalized virtual fitting session with Newton’s head of R&D, ensuring the shaft is tailored to your specific swing dynamics.

High-End Materials: Uses premium carbon fiber materials for increased durability and performance.

What They will be Testing?

Selected testers will receive a Newton Motion Driver Shaft, complete with tip and grip, based on a virtual fitting session. You will assess the performance of the shaft in terms of increased distance, launch control, stability, and feel. Testers will provide in-depth feedback on whether the shaft meets Newton's performance claims and improves overall driving performance.

Please welcome and congratulate our testers!

Introduction

Hello fellow Spies! I'm Jeff, golfing since 1979, never very good; my lowest handicap index has been 19.2. I was out of the game for almost 20 years due to a shoulder injury and a new obsession to replace golf (marathon running). After a decade of running, the motivation was gone and I eventually returned to golf in 2022, getting fitted for all new clubs except a putter. He put me on a Mizuno ST-X driver with a Diamana Red 50 gram x5ct, regular flex shaft. Love the Mizuno and it keeps me in play, most of the time, but I realized a shaft upgrade might be in order to improve launch angle (mine is too low, which in turn reduces carry distance). So I've been looking into driver shafts for a few months, and the Newton was at the top of my list. When this test was announced, I put my name in for consideration, and by some miracle I was selected! Thanks to Newton and to the MGS staff for giving me this awesome opportunity!

Quick synopsis of my game: After 40+ years of banana balls, I've finally learned how to hit the occasional draw and turn the slice into a fade. Drive distance is 200-ish, maybe a touch more if I catch it right. Over the past six months I combined training with Rypstick and Fit For Golf (tested FFG for the MGS site as well) and gained about 13 mph of clubhead speed, but it's still only at 85 mph, which is right on the borderline for the Newton 2-dot and 3-dot in their 6-dot system. Will be interesting to see which shaft I end up with for the test.

I have a Garmin R10 launch monitor and plan to use that for direct comparisons with my current Diamana gamer on the range; since launch angle and carry have been my bugaboos, I'll specifically look to see if those improve with the Newton. On the course, we'll see if I'm hitting more fairways and/or getting more distance, and (cross my fingers) if my scores come down. Both the 2-dot and 3-dot also weigh 50 grams, so that allows for a good apples-to-apples comparison with my Diamana as opposed to a different weight which would introduce another variable. I understand that the stock Newton grip is from Lamkin, which I've never used, so I plan to get it gripped with the Winn grip I currently use, again to remove an extra variable (I work in medical research, so I think in those terms on a daily basis).

Unboxing

There will be fitting first to determine the proper dot number for me (as noted above, I'm expecting a 2 or 3 dot; the range is 1 to 6). Once that happens, tune in for the unveiling! Also will document the regripping.

Final Review

Does the Newton kick the Diamana out of my bag or do I keep looking for a shaft upgrade? We will find out together!

I’m really forward to your evaluation.

im deciding to keep TM head (great sound) and upgrade shaft or start the journey from the ground (tee box) up

have fun

Hit it hard and hope to find it!!

This will be a fun one to follow.

I've used the Newton shafts here and there and think they are very well made and a great product overall.

That said I have found other who have performed better for me. My belief is that they are just a bit too heavy for my swing...at least the models I've tried.

Hey everyone -- my Intro section has been added above; please see...

Quick playing update - played 9 today; 6 driver shots (hybrid off #9) .. two left misses; one ran through the dogleg into the right rough; and 3 good shots against a light breeze of 200, 205, 210 all near enough to the center of the fairways. So 50% with good dispersion.

Great intro Chuck, @cksurfdude and looking forward to seeing how the Newton compares to your current shaft which seems to be performing well for you. 😎

Hopefully you will have decent weather to get some testing done on the course.

Congratulations testers! I hadn't heard of Newton shafts before seeing them mentioned in this forum, so I'm looking forward to reading the tests and seeing whether they benefit your game.

Enjoy the process and swing well!
