How to hit longer shots...

Play with the wind on hard dry tracks.... Haha

But really.

Try this little thing I started doing.

Choke up about 2 inches. I have no idea what's happening mechanically speaking, but I decided to get my hands closer in at address and found I needed to choke up a bit to keep the club lying flat. As soon as I did this it seemed my swing was easier to control and the ball is actually going further. I cannot explain why, but, I thought I would pass my experience along in case anyone else finds it helpfull.

GO HAWKS!

It most likely has to do with hitting the center of the club face more consistently, by "choking" down the shaft you have better control with your hands, which will likely allow you to hit the center more often, thus hit it farther. You may also find that by taking your regular grip and swinging a percentage less, say 85-90% of full, you will most likely have similar results. Center hit drives are the best, the key is trying to repeat it, most of us haven't figured that out yet, but it sounds like you have found a way in your game to find the center of the face more often. Good luck with the new found distance

I got tired of choking down and finally just cut all my clubs down an inch and a half. I really don't care how far they go as long as they go where I aim and go a consistent distance.  Both are significantly better with shorter clubs.

Arms hanging down more naturally from the shoulders now at address? Helps to swing from the inside better.

I see many people setting up with their arms out, almost rigid, at address, and not hanging down from the shoulders. They almost always have a resulting over the top move, which robs distance/excess spin.

Longer shaft does not always equal more distance - hitting the ball solidly does - I always grip down a bit on the club.  Good tip.

Funny thing about this subject we just had a discussion on another forum in the classic section. Guess what? the results were the same for some folks. One guy shortened his classic persimmon driver by 1 inch and found out he hit the center of the club more often with better control

Cut down by irons by 1/2". I've picked up 10-20 yards a club. Makes it so much easier to have the swing I want.

Maybe also on the skinnier part of the grip, thus allowing the club to be in the fingers? Easier to turn the club over? I dunno... I shot a lousy scoreof 83, but had a triple and 2 doubles. But other than hose, I hit the ball really well...

And I did have two drives over 300!!

With the wind, downhill and dry haha...
