All day Saturday I'll be manning the Shotlink tower at the 14th green at the Players!  There will be three of us up there, one to man the laser, one to enter the relative ball location on a grid and the third to rotate with the other two.  We had our training last Saturday.  We should be able to have measured and transmitted the data on how far each ball is from the hole before the players reach the green.  

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

On each non-par 3 hole, there are fairway spotters and green spotters.  The fairway spotters do the tee shots and maybe punch outs etc.  Shots on or near the green are done by the Green spotters from the tower.  We coordinate on tweener shots based on who has the best view.

I volunteered to be signboy at several of the Pods/Transitions/Valspar Tournaments as the main sponsors changed over the years. Walked inside the ropes with a group of 3 players and their caddies for 4-5 hours. Great to see these guys up close. Lsat time was 2015. I was with Bo van Pelt, Chez Reavie and Justin Thomas. This year i skipped it. Those hills really got to my feet and ankles.

Couple of guys in my golf group have been volunteering at the Players for years and graduated to Shotlink last year.  One of them wanted a break on Saturday, so I'm filling in.  I think once in, I'll be able to do it future years as well.

I have done Shot link for 3 years at the Texas Valero open be fore going to the Driving range.  Shot Link on the green can be kind of tricky at times.  the hardest thing is finding the ball on the green looking through the view finder.  It's a blast though, best seats on the Hole......

Just helped out with a local charity outing but got to sit! Was monitor at the green of a long uphill Par 3 for a Hole In One / Closest To The Pin contest.

 

(no one got it; tho one guy did bounce the ball about a foot in front of the flag but it rolled all the way to the back on a VERY contoured, tricky green!)

(closest shot was 15' 10" ... more players missed that green than stuck it....)

 

Been thinking of volunteering at MGA (local Ams and Pros) events so could see some good golf up-close but also worried a bit about being on my feet that long ... problems with the hips (both sides dammit!) keeping me from playing....

They have many volunteer jobs. I usually get some active job, like runner between the scorers table and the clubhouse at a Symetra event, or signboy. But i see plenty of volunteers who sit all day next to one green in a lawnchair and never move from the spot, sometimes with their wives. They call them green marshalls or something like that. I think they are supposed to stop the hoards from trampling the green. Other guys volunteer to be shuttle drivers, shuttling volunteers around the course, back and forth from the volunteers center to various spots around the course. So there are plenty of jobs where you can sit all day. They never turn down a volunteer. They've always got something that needs covered. And you can always refuse to do a particularly tough job, they understand.

To get one of these volunteer gigs, contact the course membership a couple months prior to the event. Ask for the member in charge of the club relationship with the

PGA or LPGA or whoever. He will know who is in charge of volunteer coordination. The Valspar Tournament now has a website up in advance, and they have contacts to the volunteer coordinator. So many of the big events have websites.

I will be interested to hear Jax's comments about the course conditions. Watching this year's conditions verse other years is a shocking contrast. I finally saw a bit of fire in the greens yesterday afternoon but the damage is done in regards to scoring. I wonder if the PGA is trying to establish a myth that Rory, Jason and Jordan are all Tiger equals, They arent, yet.

I've volunteered to be a shuttle drive for the PGA at Whistling a number of years ago. It was great and included tickets to a different day plus a foursome at the course.

Sorry--never got back to this.  Our experience on 14 I think epitomized the whole course.  14 didn't get a lot of pub, but I think it was the toughest hole on the course relative to standard that day.  If not, it had to be close.  Only a couple of birdies, one of which was Jerry Kelly from off the green.  A ton of three putts, many after green side chips.  More triple bogies than I could count, and Kaymer's quad (though he did two putt once he reached the green).  There were only two locations on the green from which players were regularly able to two putt.  We definitely got a workout on the Shot Link trying to measure the multiple putts.  Memorable day.
