    Whipping 101

A fellow spy contacted me asking about the whipping of a friends 5-wood that came undone. He wondered if this is something most golf repair men still fix or if it’s something he could do on his own. I told him most old timers can probably do it, but it’s also something he could do himself, he just needed a little instruction and a few supplies. Now, this diy is to show you how to re-wrap whipping that has come undone, which you can remove and reuse, or if the whipping is completely gone, using new whipping. I didn’t have any clubs that were ready for whipping on my drying rack right now so I just used an old club that I’d found that already had the whipping removed. I have a few tricks to make whipping easier, like a whipping jig I built and use, but for this diy, I’m going to show you the easiest way for a guy at home in his garage using the most basic of clubbuilding tools can re-whip an old persimmon wood. First put your club in a rubber golf club clamp and gently tighten so that the club is secure but can still be spun easily in the club. This is important to make winding the whipping easier. Next, grab your whipping. You can remove and reuse the old whipping or you can use new whipping. I offer 5-yard spools for DIYers that will wrap one club, so that’s what we’ll use here. Take the spool and cut off about 8 inches of whipping and set it aside, we will use this piece later. Next, take the spool and unwind it a bit. Lay the end whipping on the spool about 1/2” down the back of the shaft at the top where the whipping begins. You usually see a discoloration on the shaft to see where to start, just make sure it’s on the back of the head. Wrap around the shaft about 5 times over the end to keep it secure. Now, continue wrapping by using your right hand to guide the whipping while the left hand twists the club head to rotate the shaft in the clamp/vise. Continue wrapping the whipping tightly until you are about five wraps from the end. Take the 8” piece of whipping you cut off earlier, make a loop with it, and lay it down on the back of the club head on top of the whipping. Continue whipping over top of the loop your final five or six turns. Once you have reached the bottom, thread the end of the whipping through the loop. Pull the loop up and the end of he whipping will be tucked underneath the last five rows of whipping. Use an Exacto knife to cut the excess from the tucked pieces at the beginning and end of your wrap. Apply some clear nail polish to to keep the ends secure. And there you go. A nice, tight whipping, and an old club ready for many more rounds.

... The Mrs is in town for a few days and she was just killing it off the tee. 210-230 with my old Fly Z cranked to 12* and a Tensei Blue L Flex shaft. Just a joy to watch. She hasn't played in 7 months so much of the rest of her game was very rusty but off the tee she was soooooo good. ... And saw one of the best shots I have ever witnessed on a muni. Playing Aguila's 6th hole, 347 from the Silver tees and I hit a 2 iron 261 leaving me 86 to the pin. Had a good 15mph wind at my back so I knocked down a 52* to about 10 feet*. Feeling pretty good about my 261 yd drive and my birdie putt, a ball rolls past my feet catches the tier and rolls back down to about 6" from the hole. We look around and see nobody until the guys behind us that were playing the tips at 377 are heading down the cart path ... and that was one of their drives!?!? They were looking in the desert 50 yds short of the hole and my wife yells at them "Your ball is on the green!" Guy drives up and apologizes and my wife says "Apologize? That's the best shot I have ever seen so nothing to apologize for" then walks over and high fives him. Am I a lucky guy or what? * No I didn't make the birdie putt.

For the first time in almost 10 years, I do not have an all Callaway bag, still waiting on the G410 LST 3 wood, G410 hybrid and a MD4 50* wedge, also the bag is temporary until I get my Ping bag.

Against the wind... With the wind... By the time we got to the back nine it was a 22 mph sustaining wind. #13 was the first time I hit over the lake and landed safely in two. On #16, I did my best heading into it by hitting a low line drive. Like I said, it took a normal day of golf and made it interesting. Today was very interesting, we had 22mph sustaining winds with gusts of 40mph. So, with that in mind, I shot a 43/45:85 today with almost no help from my Putter. The Par 5 #13 was reachable in two, and I was just 5 yards off the green but chunked a chip but scrambled for the par. The Par 4 #16 was reached in two, which I hardly ever do, only to 4 putt. Argh! I landed on the back of the green and the pin was in the front. However, it was fun trying to fight the wind. Sent from my iPad using MyGolfSpy

A little chilly today. But got a wild 9 holes in. Started with 3 birdies in a row. Than the last 6 holes I was 16 over par for a 49. Not sure if I was nervous. Or I just stink that bad . Combination of both I assume. Was just fun starting the way I did. The guys were looking at me like “ who is this guy” . Well “ the guy “ came back to earth on the 4 Th hole -9th hole. Not sure how I should feel. Great for such a miraculous start. Or mad for such a lackluster end

  11. I'm kinda in-between these two. Since I have had the G30 and G400 MAX previously. I'd say the point Stud mentions about off center hits is accurate. I certainly don't notice it on every drive. But yes there are times it's very remincent of the G30. However, I don't consider that going backwards. I just consider it the sound it makes. As long as it's giving me that nice high ball flight and finding fairways, I'll take whatever sound it brings. But I only know with some sound can be a deal breaker. So up it's definitely another reason people should get fit so they can hear the sound of that's important to them.

  12. My former driver was a G30 so this one is like a dream for me. Both drivers are louder on mis-hits but I'm finding the center of the club face much more often with G410 than I ever did with the G30. Instead of the usual CLANG or PAONG, I'm getting a very satisfying KABLOW BOOOM PIKAEWEEE The rest might feel otherwise comparing it to various OEMs

  13. Fellow testers, @jlukes, @tony@CIC, @fixyurdivot, @GolfSpy STUDque & @Golfspy_CG2, anyone beside myself hating the sound of this driver? I've not heard anyone pipe up about it thus far, but for me it's almost as obnoxious sounding as my old G-Series that I just couldn't stand. To me, PING has stepped backward with this aesthetic where the 400 had a more muted tone to it which was a major reason I got it last year. I plan on doing a comparison between the sound each makes in my pending stage-2, but so far the "tinny" report this thing makes is just not pleasing at all. Thoughts?

  14. Couple of other variations that I managed with my SS28 Armlock if those trialling are fiddlers. Just like to acknowledge @CarlH first and his comment that a goal could be to trial these putters 'off the shelf'. 1) Imitated DeChambeau with getting a thicker 17" grip and rotating it so the flat is testing against your forearm. I found a nice cheap Superstroke 1.3 17" to play with, feels a lot more comfortable. 2) Counterweight. Ended up adding 40g of tungsten powder to the butt end. Felt had more control of the head when the CoG was about 1/4 of the way up. This was the #1 improvement for distance control. 3) Swapped the shaft for a UST Frequency putter shaft that was lying around the local pro shop discarded. Had to cut it to maintain the dynamic loft. Felt much softer.

Yup, an old 1961 I believe, Macgregor Tourney I found for $2. I used that for the demo just because it was sitting there in the pile with its whipping already removed. I guess I should have used a lighter colored head as it would have been easier to see the whipping. I’m just happy most of the pictures are in focus as I had my 8 year old take the pics when I didn’t have a free hand. [emoji16] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I've actually had some mild success when playing in the wind, especially on par-3's for some odd reason. Had one shot from an elevated tee that normally plays about 150-yds or so that was direct into about a 25-mph sustained breeze that made it more of a 200-yd hole. I pulled 3w and cranked one that nearly went in! Another time, again direct into the teeth of the wind on another par-3, I hit a 7-iron where I would normally pull a 9 or PW that went right up with a nice little cut and wound up about 10'. I wish those were more common...

  19. Indeed. It's quite a change from the 400 and very...well, "distinctive" for sure...So far it gets low marks from me on this particular quality. Now if I could just hit the damn thing with some consistency and get gains like others have found, I may overlook this blemish, but I've been struggling with driver for some time now. Hope to be out of this funk soon.

  22. Update** my friend who was playing these irons lost some of the badges and noticed some rusting here and there. Roger Dunn worked it out and got the whole set replaced! then within 3 weeks, the new set started rusting too. He took them back to complain, and figured he would get something different. Somewhere between Roger Dunn and Wilson, they asked him that if he would stay with Wilson clubs, they would give him which ever clubs he wanted with no extra charge. So, he chose the V6 tours. Even though they cost $300 more, Wilson said no problem! And boy o boy are they purty! The problem is that he is about a 15 hdcp, and he is having a hard time hitting these new clubs. They’re small heads, thin top line, very traditional lofts. About two clubs shorter than my jacked up p790’s. But wow they felt good. i kinda think they did a disservice to the guy by changing his c300’s into these as he isn’t hitting them well at all. He said he hit them perfectly in the booth, but we all know how that works. I hit them a few times as I’ve always wanted to, and I must admit, they felt sooooo good. He says the same thing that everyone says, that he’ll become a better ball striker. To which I said, good luck!! And I told him I was jealous because they are so nice. The only good news is that he still has 90 days to decide he doesn’t like them. Anyways, kind of a ramble on there...

  28. Just a quick update to my progress, I'm still struggling to feel completely comfortable, and be consistent. Consistency is one of the main things I'd like this putter to give me and it hasn't yet, although I'm probably just being impatient. This putter is showing flashes of brilliance, and flashes of darkness. For example, my round yesterday, I had 24 putts and putted lights out. Today, I had 37 putts (no, not a typo), and couldn't make anything outside 2 inches. It's a work in progress, but I am moving in the right direction.

  29. Snuck out after chores this afternoon for a quick nine at the same course I played last weekend. I'm going to leave this nugget from my Stage 1 here because it's really relevant today: Because of the snow and rain this week I hadn't swung a club at all before heading to the course and it showed, especially with the driver. And it's almost all confidence based. Mentality is a big challenge that I need to overcome. But here's the ugly truth in all of its glory. I hit five drives today: 186, 187, 202, 205 and 207 yards. Ouch. I hit two huge slices to open the round, so this marks the first time I made this club go right. Certainly not the club. I hit a five iron 197 yards later in the round and finished with a solid for me 44 (+8). Just need some more practice to gain more confidence. My best effort, middle of the fairway and straight is below. Hit my approach to the back fringe and used the putter from there to finish with a solid par. Couple thoughts: The sound is OK. I keep going back and forth trying to decide if it's a metallic sound or more of a crack like @yungkory described. The align grip is really growing on me. Club naturally falls into the right alignment with the hands without any effort. I had initially thought about replacing the grip but I'm sticking with it for sure now.

Of course I can and I certainly do [emoji4] There is a tremendous responsibility that I owe to not only my pit, but to my 18 month old daughter, my wife, family and anyone who he encounters. I know that he has tremendous strength and has the potential to be dangerous. Fortunately, we are mindful of that and take this very seriously. He has been attacked twice while at camp as we were on vacation. Penetrating wounds to his head and neck; each time this happened, the staff who reacted said he ran away without even trying to fight. As a pit dad, that made me proud. And just to the Golden stat, it’s believable. Nobody approaches one thinking they’re aggressive. That overly friendly demeanor often invites touching or petting that the dog may not appreciate.

  32. I laid-up with a 5w off the tee and struck it to dead-center about 200 down range. Blasted a 3w 210-yds over the water, but left into the green-side trap. The shot was my 3'rd using my 60* well flat from maybe 25'. Hit the stick and it dropped dead 3" from the hole for a "gimme" par. Damn, I love this 60!

  33. Range practice. Remember when I said it's forgiving in the heel? Even with hard range rocks, I don't hear any tinny sound... it sounds more like a crack than a metal sound to me. 34. What is this sweet spot and how can I find it? All kidding aside, Callaway did a great job on dialing in the feel. It took me a couple of sessions to get used to, but it's not too bad. To me it feels just a tad bit firmer than I'm used to, but I really love the feeling the trampoline effect that the Ping G400 LST has. It's like the ball is hitting a marshmallow. I think having the jailbreak tech in the Callaway just gives it a different sort of vibe, but it's growing on me. It's raining here and fifty degrees, so today was a good day just to give the clubs a good scrubbing and play with the adjustments on the Sub Zero. I'm curious to see how the draw setting on the Opitfit hosel will change my flight. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and warmer and that sounds like a good day to hit the range. Worked a little on my irons to stop hitting the ball fat; wondering if all the different irons and shafts I hit during most wanted are having an effect on my ball striking. 47. Played a regulation 9 yesterday in very gusty conditions and happy that .. for the most part! .. was able to keep the ball on track. Except for one awful mis-hit* would've (cudda-wudda-shudda) finished at an average of bogey golf / +9 ... so making progress this season! And that's with two doubles (on both of the Par 5s!!??!!) and a triple (ouch!), but also with two solid Pars on each of two holes that I usually screw up... First par was on a short Par 3 and second par was from an elevated tee into a fairway that doglegs right and leads onto a smallish and well-sloped uphill green with a deep bunker in front, a pond right and a marsh OB left and behind .. so a visually daunting approach which has too often gotten the better of me... But this time... Decent tee shot, if short, but left edge of the fairway; second shot right where I wanted well into the dogleg. Set up for the approach to try and punch it low into the wind and aiming for the back left corner of the green - and hoping(!) the wind would hold it up and push it back. Landed pin high left, about 10 ft out. Yes - I made the putt! Really happy that I was able to par that particular hole in challenging conditions. * Awful Mis-hit: I know exactly what I did, too, and this time it wasn't technique .. it was commitment / confidence. Wind was coming from straight behind and gusts were actually strong enough to knock over my wife's push cart! The green on this hole is large but exposed to the sun and wind so had a feeling it was firm and running fast .. and there's trouble behind the green on this hole .. so did not want to over-do it. I was trying to choose between 9i and PW and decided (or: thought I'd decided...) on a 3/4 swing 9i so it wouldn't go too high / get pushed too far by the wind. Well, I was hesitant and fluffed the shot out to the right .. lost ball .. had to drop and hit again... (and barely kept it on the green .. it rolled all the way to the back edge...)
