We would probably be better off with snow. Who else is dreaming of an powerless iced Christmas? Our winter golf tour actually played today despite the storm that brought us more than an inch of rain which occasionally turned to freezing rain. There was a frost delay and it was only 34* F with winds of about 12-15 MPH at tee-off. Rain got progressively stronger, as did the wind, as the day progressed and 11 golfers who started the event (out of 96 entrants) did not finish. Today’s high temperature was 41* F here, and it is now in the upper 40s, but will be in the low 20s tomorrow, with a forecast for temperatures between the low teens to low/mid 20s for the entire Christmas weekend. All of this rain (it’s still raining and will be into early tomorrow) will freeze and make roads into big ice skating rinks. With today’s rain, freezing rain and wind, scores were much higher than usual, even when weather is pretty bad. Nobody in the open (professional) division shot better than 78 when we usually see at least a few scores in the 60s, and the best score in the amateur division was an 82. We have a couple of plus-handicap amateurs and a few more with 0 indexes and none of those guys broke 83 (the guy who shot 83 is a plus-1 and he’s a member at the private club that we played today). One other plus-handicapper who is also a top NCAA Men’s golf coach was a DNF, so I suspect that he was having a rough day (well, we were all having rough days, but his must have been REALLY rough!). I play in the senior division and I shot an 88 but didn’t finish in the money (we get gift cards or pro shop credit except for the cash prizes for skins and closest to the pins). A few very high-handicap seniors shot between 92 and 95 and took all of the senior division net money. Still, there was not a single net score of par or better, which is the first event in my five years on this tour where I have not seen a single net score below par and no pro scores close to par—and we have played some events in pretty brutal conditions! I even won the season-ending tournament of the 2021-2022 tour season with a net 65 in rain that was blowing sideways at times, but it wasn’t as cold and the rain was not nearly as relentless as it was today. My golf gear and multiple golf towels are currently drying out and the clothes that I wore today (except for my rain jacket and hat) just came out of the dryer after being washed. Nothing felt as good as a nice warm shower after getting out of those wet clothes (even a good FootJoy rain jacket didn’t keep my layers below it dry and my rain pants were leaking around the pockets and seams by the end of today’s round). It’s ironic how a shower feels good after getting wet all day!!! Siamese Moose
It was 42° when I went to bed last night. It's now -8° with a wind chill of -59°. It's hard to judge how much snow is here, as I live on a windy ridge, and there's lots of bare spots and drifts of 2 feet. I think the "official" count is 3". I did have to go outside this morning to put out the trash and recycling. I didn't do it last night due to the wind. I was afraid the cans would be blown over and everything scattered. The cans are currently nestled snuggly in a drift to secure them in place. In 1980 I visited a friend in upstate New York (near Saranac Lake) for New Years. We experienced an actual air temp of -49°, but with absolutely no wind it was surprisingly endurable. We had a shirtless snowball fight around 1 AM. You broke my weather rule. No combined extremes... My weather was supposed to be less than 1" of snow and then 1-2" rain. Of course, I got 5 inches of snow and then it started dumping buckets of rain. I have no idea what to do with my driveway now. It is a complete mess. It will be frozen hard by this evening. GaDawg
Most of you guys are accustomed to the cold, but here in the deep south we are not. It's already reached the high of 20* for today with a windchill of 4*. We are not prepared for this weather. Buildings aren't equipped for daily cold down there or houses. Never mind snow plow companies or salting for ice.
