Jeckyl and Hyde clubs

Recommended Posts

For some reason, there are clubs that I see a completely opposite result from the range to the course. Although in general I look like a tour pro at the range then come back to earth on the course, there are still clubs I hit great at the range yet just can't hit all that well at the course, and there's some I hit great on the course and hit bad at the range. Or I get different ball flights from both. And of course, there's some I see the the same results across the board.

For me, driver is always terrible at the range, or at the very least a lot more wonky, to the point where I don't even hit it at the range, yet it's still one of my best clubs on the course. Same thing with my hybrids.

Utility and long irons I always hit awesome at the range, yet terrible any where near a course.

I hit my irons and wedges the same at either.

Fairway woods are the wild card. I've seen every single scenario with them, to the point that I shrug off anything that happens.

Different balls, different scenario, different mindsets, who knows. I basically use the range to work on my aim and build my confidence, but practice on the course, short game area or putting green.

Anyone else have clubs with multiple personalities?

I learned that my clubs don't have personalities but the practice tee can cause big issues. This for me is because I don't have a fairway to aim down and there are so many target flags it makes lining up difficult versus the actual course.

I surprisingly hit my driver much better on the course. I think it is just the range tees that throw me off as I can't control the height.

Agreed. The rubber tees for driver are pretty awkward IMO

Definitely driver for me. I know it's the longest club and therefore has the tendency to be the most inconsistent.

But there was a day a week or so ago, where I was hitting perfect fade after fade on the range. Then in our 9 hole league, I hit one good drive out of 7. Just crazy.

It's me. Not you clubs.

Some days I'm on like stink on sh!t and some days I'm so off I'd rather not ever look at a club again.

If there was a club it would be my driver and putter. Seems like when ones off they both kick my ass.

Been my Cobra Hybrid this year. At the range it's smooth sailing, but on the course it's s***.... wanted to snap it in 1/2 yesterday.

Bad thing, it was my go to club last season

Not me, there's a few clubs I'm more accurate on the course with. Basically all woods.

Essentially, I've realized the range is the most useful when you go for a very specific purpose and work on just that thing.

Depends on the alignment of Mars with Venus at the right declination in relation to the year and sun flares to figure out the moods of my driver and hybrids from the range to the course. I can be killing them on the range at times and then turn into hook machines on the course. It's also been the opposite - terrible range session but good on the course. I also blame global warming for these strange occurrences... :)

Sounds like a lot of you hit off of mats. That's death for going to the course IMHO. No divots off a mat. A fat strike turns out pretty nice too. Plus at the range you can hit until you are happy.

Personally, at a course, I tend to hit 2 irons on par 4's until I feel loose ... then go to driver after my confidence is up. Just saying ...

Not split personalities but I will ignore all flight when I'm warming up because I will always revert to form on the course.
