Matsuyama Scoring Error?

i didn't want this to get lost in the actual tournament thread.

It looked very much like Matsumaya wrote down JT's score on 10 before the ball fell in. Then the cameras left him, so I'm assuming he corrected it.

But then also in the scoring trailer JT had his caddie Jimmy Johnson come over and look over the card after he did. You saw Johnson point out something to him on the card, then the cameras left again.

I suppose JT may have been so overwhelmed he just wanted a Second look.

But how horrible would it have been if Matsumaya didn't correct it and JT signed off on it. I guess he would have signed for a 69 not a 68 but still would have won by one.

Anyone else see that and have any thoughts.

Having been in a scoring tent,  while another player in the group keeps your score,  they players keep their own and they call out the scores to each other in the tent.  While errors occur,  I am pretty sure they would have fixed the score in the tent.  If there is a disagreement,  the walking scorer will also get involved in ensuring the scores are correct.

It's also not uncommon for a caddie to be keeping his players score in addition for an extra fact checker.

As others have said, if there was a mistake made I'm sure it was corrected in the scoring tent.

BUT.....you said if there was an error he would have still won by a stroke.

That is incorrect, if in fact Matsumaya he recorded a par instead of the birdie and JT didn't catch it and then signed the card he would have signed for a 69, which would now be his official score because he signed the card but then under rule 6-6b he would be given a 2 stroke penalty for signing an incorrect card and would have missed the playoff by a stroke.

Until a few years ago signing an incorrect card would have been a DQ.

Yeah, I'm sure it had to have been corrected perhaps even by Matsuyama by the time he got to the next green, just found it interesting seeing him write it down before it fell in.

Not trying to stir the pot..ha

Thanks for the correction, I didn't realize there was a penalty for signing the incorrect card.  I thought (and perhaps this was the old rule you referred to) that if you signed for an incorrect score HIGHER than your own, that is your final score, but if you signed for  a score lower than your actual score, then you were DQ'd.
