No golf tomorrow, different kind of range day planned . But golf is a go on Sunday after church.  What is something you guys would like to see tested Sunday??

For me at least the comparison to a current phone app would be ideal, particularly image overview of the hole between the two and any differences on distances. If you do the comparison please let us the the app and phone you were using.

Finally put in a 2nd round with the SX400. I decided this go around to try and only use the SkyCaddie to get more familiar with some of the features. Still more testing to do, but overall pleased with what I got out of the device today.

Also, wanted to post a quick pic from the driving range. For courses where the option is available, it’s very useful and accurate (assuming the course hasn’t recently renovated their driving range like this one did).

Another quick update from yesterday's round. I didn't do well using the SX400 to track all of my shots, but I did get a nice comparison between it and Arccos on hole #2.

As far as shot tracking, the two provided very similar results (the discrepancy of the last shot is due to the pin placement not being set). While not quite as seamless as Arccos in operation, the SX400 may be an option to consider if in the market for a shot tracking device. With Arccos going to a $99/yr subscription model for all products this year, the SkyCaddie - though higher in initial cost - would be less expensive in the long term. I've also downloaded the 18 Birdies and SkyDroid apps to compare as well.

That's a pretty good comparison.  And very little difference, which is nice.

I have a SX500 arriving next week.  I'm looking forward to getting out with it.

Here is a quick look at Skycaddie verses Arccos. We were in a rush so this is as good as I could get today.  The white numbers for Arccos are the actual yardages. From this point they were dead on. I noticed a time or two when they weren’t exactly the same. Will do more testing on this in the future.

Played a sixth different course today with the SkyCaddie.  I’ve played the course a time before but not super familiar with it.  On unfamiliar courses the SkyCaddie is a mix of Bagger Vance and Jonny 5 from “Short Circuit”.

I have found the distances to be accurate and that has helped me focus on visualizing the shot shape instead of guessing yardage and looking for landmarks.

Navigating the device remains a bit clunky but what matters is the numbers are right on the money.  This has helped me dial in what clubs go how far and when to hit what club.

More to come with more testing...I will be using this in a tournament next week.

I’m running it “old school” with an iPhone 6s.  So far it’s within 3 yards of Skycaddie on the center of the green measure.  The most common measure is 1 or 2 yards difference.

Well with as wet as the courses have been this winter, we are currently on track to get between 3-5" of rain by tomorrow morning.  Looks like I'll be able to give a bonus underwater review of the Skycaddie.

I went out today and had the first issue. I was keeping score via the device and hoping to see it upload to sky360. On the 17th hope it froze up on me and the only way to fix it was to force turn it off. Kinda frustrating. I just finished with out it as I was a little annoyed. It was working perfect till that point.

Northwood in Monte Río, CA.  Greens were shaggy but it’s awe inspiring playing next to the giant trees.  They are not 90% air hehe.

It may sound silly but that course is a bucket list for me. I get to visit the bay every other year to see family and we passed it by accident on the way down the coast. There really is nothing like it and being a MacKenzie course, it’s even more intriguing.

Heading out in a few hours to play another new course. Plan on trying to focus on tracking each shot with the SX400 utilizing some of the other features I haven’t really messed with. Curious to see if I run into an issue like @Quigleyd.

One thing that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is that this device appears to have excellent battery life. I always make sure I’ve got a full charge when I go play, but I haven’t yet been less than about 75%.

Its funny the battery life is something that I wanted to mention as well. I have played 1 18 hole round and 2 9 hole rounds and I am still over 50% if the initial charge. I have not plugged it in since I got it.

As far as the freeze, I am sure these things happen. But there are always negatives to every honest review or trial. It has worked perfectly otherwise.

Northwood in Monte Río, CA.  Greens were shaggy but it’s awe inspiring playing next to the giant trees.  They are not 90% air hehe.

Ok, NorCal. Cool. Bodega bay is one of my fav courses. Not too far from there.

My initial thought about this device was the target audience is the accomplished golfer. After living with it through 11 trips to the golf course I now believe it could benefit golfers of all levels. Reducing your overall score is more about minimizing risks than it is about hitting once in a life time shots. The SC provides the information you need to reduce risk and maximize reward.

For clarity:  my dad is not a golfer, but he is a hiker--so post church lunch he likes to join me for a walk out on the golf course.  Although I wish he was a golfer (he played many moons ago), it is still a good way for us to spend some time together.  Now with that, we were able to escape the rain this weekend and trot out for a quick 3.5 mile walk (front 9) ruined by my golf game.  He is reasonably tech savy, so I enlisted him to help test the Skycaddie this past weekend.  I really wanted to test the ease of use and accuracy.  My pops is a purely numbers guy so I figured he would fit the bill.

We got onto the first teebox, I told him that he was going to test a piece of technology and it was his job to figure out how to use it and I will help if absolutely necessary.  The purpose was to see how easy the device is to use with having no prior knowledge of it. Device powered up, tossed it to pops and let him run with it.  Being a pure numbers guy he went off measuring field markers, where my ball ended up and without fail the device nailed the posted yardages.  When we arrived to the first green, pops remarked that we forgot a scorecard.  I smiled and told him that we didn't need one, the device would keep score.  With no more instruction than that, he figured it out with a, "this thing is cool" and further remarked how simple and fast it made keeping score (default par/2 putt).

Further more he figured out how to measure previous shot distances which he became obsessed with (cool when you mash one off the tee box), and hole by hole  Dad remarked how accurate it the SC was with the posted distances on the course.  Only once did it measure 3 yards difference of one marker (based off of center of green measure) the rest were within one yard of the marker.

Through the 9 holes only twice did I have to go hands on to help--once to show how to pull up the list of hazards 4 holes in, and the last time was on number 9 when I, frustrating and embarrassingly (after hitting a horrendous tee shot), didn't want to ask for layup yardages and I just took the device to get a quick distance.   Truth be told only once I did I need to go hands on to help.

Walking to the truck dad couldn't stop saying how the SC was a "cool little device" and how amazed he was at how easy it was to use.  Literally a nongolfer that had never even seen/heard of Skycaddie took the device and ran with it.

I’d like to know if there is an annual subscription to use the device and if it has shot tracking. If so do you sync it to sensors or do you have to tag each shot.

Yes there is an annual subscription, the first year is included in the price.  The unit has shot tracking, not tags.  You hit the mark ball button on the device, a grid of clubs appears, select the club you are hitting, that's it.

This is something I have been trying to figure out how to do. I think it seems really cool

You can sync the SX400 to your home wifi.  Anytime you keep score or track your shots, come home and hit sync on the SX400.  It will upload the information to SkyGolf and you can look at the data in SkyGolf360 or download their app to view it on your phone or tablet.  When you sync it will also update the software and golf courses that have been updated by the SkyGolf mappers.  This can also be done via the computer with cable, it is easier and quicker if you can connect to wifi.
