Weird occurence this morning

I played early today, with tons of dew on the first few fairways. On the first hole both my partner and I hit our approach thin, and watched it kick up a rooster tail sa it went over a rise and out of sight. However, we were both certain we were in the fairway right in fron of the green. We get up there, and his ball is in the left rough, and mine in the right rough, and we're both astounded that they weren't in the fairway. On closer examination, the tracks in the dew were obvious, and his ball was at rest in the center of the fairway when mine hit his. Because of the tracks we were absolutely certain that's what happened, so he got to replace his. I was still stuck in the rough. Both of us left our chips woefully short, and failed to get up and down.
