Awesome job on the iron reviews, everyone. Sounds like we've got some winners across the board. I know there were a few adjustments made here and there (grips, for instance) but it looks like overall there's some great feel and performance with these Cobra irons.

Well, the muscle back blade irons only round is in the books.

image.png.31ae51b733ed0e548c8eed5289c5c937.png

To say that it exceeded my expectations would be mildly understating the obvious. Holy crow! What a round. I can admit it now, I was nervous as hell going into this one. When i was warming up on the range prior to the round, I made sure to hit a couple with my driver, just in case. I told my playing partner, who looked at me with genuine confusion when i told him, "Today is irons only", I will pull the plug after the first double bogey.

Opening up with back to back bogeys, including a 3 putt on 2 after reaching in regulation, I gave serious consideration to the thought that the golf gods were going to have me bogey every hole, just so I couldn't pull the plug, but the misery could be drawn out and savored. Then on the 3rd hole, everything sorted itself out and I settled into a nice, comfortable groove.

I won't bore y'all with a hole by hole recap, but please understand, when I say this was the most enjoyable round of golf I have played in a very long time, maybe ever.

These blades are so buttery smooth and genuinely fun to play when one is striking the ball well, that I should retire them now, so that I avoid the inevitable decline.

Big shouts to MGS and the Cobra Challenge for facilitating all of this, oh and also, I buried the lede a bit... Today was my lowest round I have ever shot. So I got that going for me, which is nice. 😎

That’s amazing! Congrats! 🙌🏼

I will be working on finalizing my review of the Supernova after my scramble league match Tuesday and 18 hole round Wednesday morning. It’s been good, but hasn’t been better/worse than my Spider Tour Platinum to this point. I really like both if I am being honest, so it may be a rotational competition the rest of this year. One thing I will be doing if the Spider stays in the bag is putting a 2.0 grip on it, but I may stay with the Pistol GTR series. The Traxion Tour 2.0 feels good, but I am so used to the Pistol GTR that it feels a bit unnatural yet. Maybe this will change with more time, we will see. Putts do roll extremely well with the Supernova.

Something about the Spider that year was really good. I had the black "DJ" version that I ended up selling, then regretting I sold, so I bought another. It's an incredible putter!

... Before I send some PM's, I am wondering if anyone on this thread wants to partner with me for this weeks 4 club challenge? I would never ask someone to join me in this heat but I may get out today as the forecast has dropped from 117* to 113* and it might be the only day I can play. Soooo who voted for Team #! and wants to be a part of History on the Winning Team?  🏆

Just did some head to head with the Supernova and my Spider Tour Platinum on my perfect practice putting mat and I have to say, the Spider thoroughly handled the Nova. Results are as follows:

4 feet: 7/10 Cobra, 10/10 TM

5 feet: 5/10 Cobra, 8/10 TM

6 feet: 4/10 Cobra, 9/10 TM

I think the biggest thing I am noticing is the difference in feel as the head of the Supernova is so much lighter and more of the weight feels in the hands and shaft. This seems to be resulting in an inconsistent back stroke and putts getting offline on me quickly. I could try to add lead tape to it, but currently don’t have any and not sure I want to.

So much of putting has to do with feel, and the Spider just feels so dang good. I have also only been gaming the Supernova for a very short period of time, and I could come to adjust to the feel, but putting is the best part of my game and I’m not willing to, or can afford to, give up strokes on the green as a high handicap player.

I’m going to keep the Supernova in the bag for the duration of the challenge and am not giving up on it, but I would say it’s currently behind the Spider.

.... For a stats guy I would think you know there would be an obvious conflict of interest and it is a criminal offense playing with a member from Team #1 after voting for team #2. I don't wanna see any MGS member like the John's (Smalls and Ross) end up in jail because they just lacked the intelligence to vote for Team #1.  I already have my hands full with CFredo!

... For most of us, lead tape is the only option. Tour players can have heads of different weights built in their OEM trailers as well as many actually having interchangeable weights they can fine tune for their putters. The chances of just grabbing a putter off the shelf that has the right length, weight and balance is pretty slim and most adjust to the putter instead of having the putter adjust to them. I can't remember the last time I played a putter without lead tape on the sole including my Sport-60. After experimenting on the practice green, one strip wasn't enough and 3 strips was too many.

WEEK 4:  FINAL CHALLENGE - 4 Club (+Putter) Challenge!

Ok so *technically* I'm letting the competitors use all the clubs in their bag for this one, but they can only choose 4!  Since I feel bad, I'll allow them to have their new putters as well!

BUT WAIT, THERES MORE:

They need your help!  Our competitors are going to ask a partner to join up and play a round with them! (virtually is ok, and you do not need to choose the same 4 clubs).  Using your course handicap you'll compare your two scores hole-by-hole to come up with your best net score on each hole. Low team wins!

The teammate of our winning team will be this weeks raffle winner!  tag your favorite competitor and see if they want to pair up!

For Tracking purposes I'll update this post with our teams:

@Tom the Golf Nut and @Bohnson

@sirchunksalot and @OdinSnipes414

@JerryB and @GolfSpy_APH

vs

@chisag and @IndyBonzo

I think I can get out for a round at the course down the road from work this week, so if needed, Team #1 can deploy me as they see fit with the caveat that the PB on Sunday dropped my index to 5.8, so I’m only getting 6 strokes on the course I would be playing.

That’s ok… I’d probably make a rule not allowing you to play with your link.1 since that’s an unfair advantage! 😂

Unless something changes, it looks like I'm teaming up with @CFreddie! Decided to recalculate my handicap to reflect my game post injury and it came up a little bit but not as much as I thought it would. Looking forward to it!

... My 4 Club Challenge round was completed today in 114* heat. Gonna be hotter the rest of the week so it was today or not at all. I still need a virtual pard though!

Using your course handicap you'll compare your two scores hole-by-hole to come up with your best net score on each hole.

I've never played a competitive round before so maybe this is simple, but can someone explain to me how this works?  This sentence looks like gibberish to my peanut brain.

Right, but how is that view backwards? I’m imagining the front of the bunker is much lower than the back (where the pin is), so the play could be to go backwards, no?

... Since the course was empty with 114* temps, I took some pictures of the hole to give you a better idea. Hard to tell from the pictures but that is crusty dirt, not sand. You can walk on it and not leave a footprint. 😳

The first picture is from the other side of the lake.

The 2nd is from the forward tees.

The last is from the edge of the bunker.

It’s simpler than I’m making it sound… just write your actual score on a scorecard and take a picture after the round.

I’ll do an example tomorrow!

... Like I said, it would be bad if it had real sand in it. But yea, No Bueno is spot on!

... OK then. 114* today so I played the front in just under 1 hour and would have done the same on the back but ran into two twosomes on #16 and I came to a grinding halt. So who wants to partner up?!? I just had my coat tails professionally cleaned and there is plenty of room.

... I think this is the easiest of the challenges because if you pick the right 4 clubs you are never more than 1 club from what you may need. For instance choosing a 5 and an 8 you have 4i (5i) 6i  and  7i (8i) 9i while the wedge are more personal and what you use best around the green. That said I only had to chip 3 times and one was for an eagle when I hit my 5 iron over the green. Nice 15mph wind at my back and the ball was really flying in the heat.

... So you can see where we need a par and some birdies wouldn't hurt. That said, anyone that wants to pair up there is no pressure and if you bogie every hole (or worse) at least we gave it our best effort! It is about the journey, not the destination. 🤗
