Who has the best premium ball? Let's find out!

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to put a few different balls to the test. I am currently playing with Titleist Pro V1x, but I could see myself switching soon if I could find a better fit. I am thinking about conducting a test myself between the Pro V1x, Taylormade TP5x, and the Callaway Chrome Tour X. I'm also considering Srixon Z-Star XV and Callaway Chrome Soft X.

Before going any further, I'd like to hear some feedback from the forum on the balls listed above. Pros/cons other people have found by using them. Things I am looking for are spin control, consistent ball flight, and forgiveness. I want to try them side by side to see what fits my game the best.

Balls I am considering:

Titleist Pro V1x

Taylormade TP5x

Callaway Chrome Tour X

Srixon Z-Star XV

Callaway Chrome Soft X

I have always loved the feel of the TP5 series, but not always the performance.

The new Chrome Tour had been stupid good for me and is close to a go-to ball.

Hard to say much else other than great things about the ProV1 family. There is a reason they are as good as they are and played by so many.

Srixon used to be my gamer and would happily still use their golf balls any day of the week.

That all said, I still use my Vice Pro Plus and am very happy with them. They give me the performance I want and need as well as pricing that is hard to beat.

Bridgestone is another brand that offers premium golf balls, which don't seem to get quite as much run as they should.

I have always been a Titleist ProV1x player and I did try the Maxfli Tour X and TP5x. I found the TP5x to be a little longer than the Prov1x.  Maxfli Tour X is also a decent ball.

Not on your list but I’m in love with the Wilson Staff Model ball. Feels soft off the putter like the chrome soft did for me but better for me off every club. Playing the regular model and my only complaint would be maybe a touch more spin from irons but I’m playing Cobra Forged Tec at the moment. Have some t150’s coming hoping for the slight spin increase.

Have you followed up on any of the 2024 ball tests on the forum?

The Callaway and Taylormade balls were both tested out thoroughly and have some interesting feedback!

Maxfli as well.

And I agree you may want to look into the Bridgestone balls as well. They have a visual "fitment" guide to assist with that.

I've been really impressed with the Maxfli particularly at the price point.   I tried a number of the premium brands, but have trouble paying the full freight on ANY of the tier one balls.   When I can save $20 a dozen with no discernable loss of performance for this 60+ year old 11 handicapper, I'm playing a lot of the wanna be balls (Maxfli, Vice).

Can’t beat ProV1 however I agree with DCXMIKE, Maxfli and Vice Pro are my go to for performance at reasonable cost. Recently tried (again) Snell MTBX but was disappointed with the durability. Great performance but not when the ball scuffs off regularly iron shots.

The feel of the 2024 TP5x, in addition to improved performance over the prior iteration, is a big plus for me. I've been playing a couple sleeves of the prototypes this year and have really liked them. V1x is always going to be really good and really consistent ball to ball.

One thing to note with the TP5x is that it is a bit of an outlier in that "x" category ball in that it is actually lower spinning than the TP5. So if you're looking for a ball with a bit more spin on long irons, you'll maybe want to give that one a run in it's place.

Maxfli Tour series are really, really good as some others have mentioned, and the price is nearly impossible to beat for the performance. I've got a bunch of the X to play this season.

Yeah, I am going to be reading a bunch in this thread. I can’t remember where I saw it recently, but I was reminded that the golf ball is the only constant in every Golf stroke. Needless to say, it’s pretty important. I am currently playing the Bridgestone BRX ball and love it. That being said, I would really like to get my hands on the new TP-5 and Chrome Tour ball. I don’t like a ball with too high of compression. So if I can find a ball that spins enough around the green, is long off the tee, and feels great to putt, I am a buyer!

Thought I made a huge mistake buying 4

All the balls you listed are exceptional.

The left dash was great. I switch to the Wilson and couldn’t be happier. They are cheaper, lower spin off the driver, and feel better for me.

Which Wilson are you using. I wanted

to try them as well. Went crazy buying for 4 for 3 deals when they were available last month. I have 8 doze Tout Chrome that are amazing a well. The Tour Chrome have a great feel off the putter. Left Dash are awesome in the wind. Harder feel when putting.

I’m using the new Wilson Staff Model 24 regular non-x version.  They are buy 2 get 1 so I bought 6 dozen after finding one on the course and putting it in play for 9ish holes.

Thank all of y'all for the quick responses and input! I will definitely take in all of the considerations as I explore which ball is best for me! I'm thinking about doing a season long comparison between balls. Maybe in the form of a head to head bracket between 2 balls every round until only 1 ball remains. Test the balls in a few different ways like one ball for the front and a different ball for the back, take 2 shots from different locations to have a direct comparison throughout the round, and any other way I see fit.

I'll post updates to this topic as I complete rounds and tests. I will get to work on making a bracket with balls I listed and other balls mentioned from you all!

@arodrig29 Last week I played 9 holes with the new Chrome Soft Ball - whoa! The feel of the ball was fantastic.  The ball seemed to jump off the driver.  As for putting, I liked the feel of the ball.  Chipping with the Chrome ball was also a good feel. Overall, I liked the feel & sound of the ball off the clubs.

The two rounds previously to playing the Chrome Ball, I played the new Pro V1 ball and really liked as well.  Tomorrow's round, I'll be playing the new TP5 ball to see how it compares.

The Chrome Soft Ball was impressive.

... I just don't find much difference between similar premium balls for my game. This year I have played Maxfli Tour, Chrome Tour, ProV1x and TP5x. They have all been excellent performers, with the Maxfli the least durable but I start every round with a new ball and at the Maxfli $119 price point forf 4 dozen it really isn't an issue. But after getting a trial 4 ball pack of the '24 TP5x, I found it a little longer than the rest off my driver with the same green side spin and the durability is outstanding. So I picked up a box of the buy 3 get 1 free deal and have been delighted with the performance.

If you’re talking about the new Top Flite Gamer ball then I really do like them but they don’t seem to be very durable. It seems like I can’t play more than 4-5 holes before I see a mark or 2. But at $30/2 dozen and $54/4 dozen it’s a hard deal to beat for a ball that the only problem I’ve had is durability.

I have a cobra rad speed driver, cobra fly z 3 and 5 wood, taylormade m1 irons (5-PW), Top Flite Gamer wedges (52,56,60), and odyssey white ice putter. When I’m playing to keep score I typically play the Maxfli Tour X. When just getting a round in with friends or scrambling I play whatever I might find on the course or might find at the bottom of my bag.

I have that same problem.. what I’ve read online is 1000 rpm times whatever iron you have so 9 iron = 9000 rpm and I’m not really seeing that across my bag.
