Wilson Staff C200 irons and PMP Wedges

I was the very lucky winner of the Wilson Staff head to toe makeover.   Since I was in the market for new irons before the contest, I was really excited about the opportunity.  I have put the C200 irons and PMP wedges in the bag, had my first range session and 18 this past weekend. I played the same course a week earlier w/ my old irons/wedges in similar conditions, so have a great comparison.  Let's get to it!

The Clubs:

Constants in both rounds:

Driver: Callaway Big Bertha 10.5* R Flex

 Hybrids:  Adams Tight Lies 2 :  17*2hy and 23*4hy

 Putter:  Scotty Cameron Fastback Select

 Ball: Bridgestone E6

20160423_155247.jpg

Previous Irons/Wedges:  Adams A7, R Flex Steel  5-GW, SW, LW  (Standard LLL)

New Irons:  Wilson Staff C200 R Flex Steel 5-GW

New Wedges:  Wilson Staff PMP 52*08 and 56*14

This is my first time having a set custom built, the specs are +½” and 3* Upgright

I was fitted by the local golf store before we ordered the equipment

This is also my first time using premium wedges, I had been playing my previous setup for about 6 years

A7Specs.JPG

C200Specs.JPG

As you can see from the specs, loft wise, there isn't much difference, the new Wilson C200's are only 1* stronger in most of the cases, save for the GW, that is 2*

MY GAME:

A little about my game.  I don't keep an official handicap, but as I've calculated, I would be about a 12.

I am not a particularly long hitter, rely more on accuracy and keeping the ball in play off the tee.  My        strength has always been the shorter irons, 9i to wedges.  For reference, my 150yd club has been my 8 iron.

Initial Impression:

The C200's are a really good looking club.  Most notable are the resin filled pockets around the perimeter, which are part of the ‘flex face'.  The C200's are definitely thicker than my A7's, but not obscene, and they don't show it much at address.   The pictures are comparing my the 7i and PW of the 2 sets.  One thing about me, I do not like the really big, thick topline game improvement irons, I was a little worried these would lean that direction, but I don't mind the look at all, and they are not heavy like some other GI irons.  The wedges have a similar look to other premium wedges (vokey, cleveland, etc….)

Range Session:

It took me a while to get used to them, perhaps it was having irons that were longer/more upright, or I”m just so used to my Adams.  I hit quite a few fat shots and big pushes when first starting out.  I was able to get them under control and hitting nice shots by the end of my large bucket.

Feel:

The C200's have a very nice, smooth feel to them.  Both on well struck, and off center shots.  I would say, if you're the kind who wants a ton of feedback on off center hits, these might not be for you.

Sound:

I felt that the C200 made a little more of a ‘click' sound at impact than what I'm used to.  It's not off-putting, but I thought it was noticeable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjMV3-474i8&feature=youtu.be

Distance:

I don't feel that the C200, especially on the shorter irons, provided a ton more distance.  There is only 1* loft difference, so I didn't expect a whole lot.  I will say, I felt like the C200's were ‘easy' distance.  I think a nice, smooth, controlled swing provided the best results.

Ball Flight:

This is where the C200's shined. While they may not have been more than a couple yards longer than my current setup, these things REALLY launch the ball high.  From 5i to GW, I felt like I was launching the ball into the air.  The ball got up quickly, and just seemed to hang there forever.  I really prefer this flight, since I don't use a high spin ball, I like the idea of the higher flight to help the ball hold the green.

The Wedges:

These things are the real deal.  The feel is buttery smooth.  I did not have any of the same problems starting out that I had with the irons.  From the first shot w/ the 52*, I was peppering the 100yd flag with every shot.  The 56* was no different, carrying it about 80 yards.  These were built to the same specs and have the same shafts as the C200 irons.

20160423_101214.jpg

Experiences during the 2 rounds:

Played the same course, from the same tees, with the same ball and similar conditions.

Stats/Scores are posted below.  I actually hit more greens w/ the new irons, although I felt like my aim was a little off and I was little erratic.  I did not have any carry over of the fat shots from the range, I had evidently got that worked out, I did hit a couple thin, but the results weren't bad, just a loss of some distance.  One thing I really noticed was in the rough, the new C200's seemed to really glide through the rough easily, and launch the ball out of it.  I actually hit one of the best shots I've ever hit…..I sliced a drive pretty far right on a par 4, in an open area.  I was 177 out and had some trees to get over, about 50 yds in front of me.  I pulled the 6 iron, took a nice smooth swing and absolutely launched the ball up over the trees, with just a little fade, the ball landed on the back half of the green, and only released about 15 feet….giving me a 20 foot putt for birdie when I thought I was in jail.  I love my old irons, but I don't think my old 6i could have gotten the ball up that high and that far with that swing.

The wedges, I didn't get many chances for full shots during the round, but did plenty of chipping with both.  They had a great feel and I always felt like I was under control of the distance.

C200.JPG

Final Thoughts:

I really like the way the C200 irons feel and ball flight they produce.  If you are like me, not good enough for players irons, but don't want giant, shovel-like game improvement irons...you should definitely check these out.  They certainly fall somewhere in the middle, plenty of forgiveness, but playability to got with it.  Where they shine the most to me, are the high ball flight and ease in the rough.  I can't say enough about the PMP wedges either, the feel is fantastic and had great control around the greens.

Nice work Judge -- glad you're liking the C200's so far. Finally had a chance to hit the wedges Saturday and I gotta agree, really sweet feel to them.  Can't wait to hear if you like the woods and hybrids...the D200 are silly easy to hit and I found the driver to be plenty long.

Very nice job Judge. While we would game the C200 for different reasons it sounds like we have lots of similarity in our experience with them. Like you I'm not seeing tons more distance. I'm not sure that the launch higher for me but they sure launch easier and fly plenty high enough. The ball flight is stable in the wind and they clearly produce more spin.

My 13th hole is 300 and the number 4 handicap hole and a course full of number 1 handicap candidates. Think 10 at Riviera with 3 distinct sections on the green that cause the hole to play differently when played there. I played it 3 times last week in 1 under, it's because I get noticably more spin with the C200's. I had PW based upon where I laid up each day.

Enjoy and thanks for the write up. In anxious to hear about the hybrid.

That was a well written review, as you covered all the bases pretty well. It seems that the irons are not only easier for you to get up into the air from the fairway/rough, they provide you with the confidence to hit greens in regulation more frequently, as evidenced by your slightly lower scores (84 & 82) than with the Adams (87). It's obvious that the Wilson irons will be staying in your bag for a while.

Wilson's a brand that doesn't get much exposure (ignoring the golf balls) in Australia, so I'll be definitely trying them out when I get the opportunity.

The irons are incredible out of the rough, I've never had such ease getting a ball up and in the air from the long grass.  I played a nicer course this past week, tightly mown bentgrass fairways and it was soggy, i was really struggling with catching the ball fat, but I don't think the irons had anything to do with that.......my accuracy on the short irons is probably down a little, but that's to be expected, I had been playing the Adams for 5-6 years and was totally dialed in with them.  Thanks for the kind words on my review.   If you are looking for new irons, these should 100% be on the demo list.

Thank you Judge for the great detailed review. I will have to try and demo these clubs, I too have a hard time getting my irons up in the air. The irons look great, not too oversized. Good swing you got there

Thank you Judge for the great detailed review. I will have to try and demo these clubs, I too have a hard time getting my irons up in the air. The irons look great, not too oversized. Good swing you got there

Thanks 808!  You will not have trouble getting these up in the air :)   Sounds like you fall into the same category as me, these are definitely worth your time to try out

My best round ever at this course, hit many more greens than usual......doesn't show that I hit as many fairways, but I was hitting my driver much further, and many were just off the fairway....actually drove a par 4 and hit a par 5 in 2 w/ my 7i.....I haven't hit a par 5 in 2 in many years....First round w/ the Wilson Staff Duo U (i don't credit all that distance to the ball, i changed my driver swing a bit, trying to hit up on the ball, and it worked like a charm)

Quick update and that's probably all for this thread:

Loving the Duo U's, it's my new ball......spin around the greens is solid and i'm still keeping it in the fairway

Had a chance to really try out the D200 woods/hyrbrids I received.

3h:  totally impressed, easy to hit, launches the ball high and deep....going into the bag, probably kicking out my Adams 2h

D200 Driver was another story, I was not that impressed.  I put it against my current 2014 Big Bertha, as well as many of the new offerings from other manuf at a demo days.  Maybe it's the extremely light head, but I couldn't consistently hit it straight, and when I did, I don't feel like it was keeping up w/ the other offerings (M1, Cobra F6, Cally GBB) that i tried, distance wise.  Nothing wrong with it mind you, but it won't be kicking my current driver out of the bag

I hope this thread has given you guys some good info on the current Wilson Staff offerings. I am still loving the C200's and PMP Wedges, as a matter of fact, I just ordered the 60* to match my set.

What happened with Wilson's website. I was looking to try the clubs and or customize some wedges and see the options, but I can't find anything on their site. Theire irons and wedges are very competitively priced but no custom options?!
