What are the green conditions like for the test? If it were in my area in November it would be pretty rainy and sometimes soggy and would slow down the putts.

Very good thus far to be honest. We've gotten rain over the last 4-5 days but I haven't been back out since. I've been staying away when it's soft for that reason but also to avoid footprints messing up the putts. The next week or so should be decent conditions for the putting green.

Guys hope I do this some justice. I did a quick test of the 3 following putters. I found as Flat a place as I could on one of our greens that was underwater from Irma but has recovered well. I chose this green because it had just opened and nobody was using it yet.

I took 4 tees at 90* to the hole at intervals of 3', 6' and 9'. At each spot I hit 4 putts from each putter for total of 16 putts per putter.

The only data I recorded was misses. Per 16 putts.

I noticed you said you had the 10g heel/5g toe in the XDream but the 5g heel/10g toe in the Odyssey ... is that correct, or a typo?

If so, interesting that they felt that different to you.

Anyway, I'm a very happy user of the Tour XDream; also curious to see your pending reactions to it vs the others. (Though I do agree with the others who think it woud take a TON of data to uncover small differences in the results.) And nice pics .. the moving GIFs of swinging each is really good!

That's a nice observation but no, it's not a typo. I was waiting for someone to notice the difference.

I kept pulling across the Fang and the toe weighting helped me keep the face square at impact. I tried the same configuration in the X-Dream but found it made the putter feel heavier than necessary and I would drag the toe for an open face. I tried a few in the X-Dream but Jmike's setup ended up being my winner after all.

I'm not going to be able to double the data set because it'll just require too many long lunches so we'll just have to take my results with a grain of salt. Putting is already a different strokes for different folks category anyway.

We have a big meeting all week this week so I'm not sure how much data I'll get to gather. If we get out early on a nice day, I'm more likely to play. Will try and have this thing all wrapped up by Christmas though.

Rick,

a little confused about your comment that hitting the MLA is like hitting a sharpening stone... soft or hard?  do you get any feedback?  My Cleveland is letting me down, and I am considering alternatives...

Sorry for being vague, that's just the first thought that came into my head when I tried it out.

It's hard. The insert putters have a soft, "bouncy" feeling at impact whereas the X-Dream has a firm feel with zero give.....like a smooth stone. The putter still has a buttery feeling at impact, it's just that the ball just gets rolling sooner than it would with the others because it doesn't take the time to "bounce" into the face.

Even still, there's great feedback if you ever miss the sweet spot. However, the head size and alignment design make sure you hit it solid 9/10 times.

could have used that at Pinehurst last week... Played like doo doo... and got down on myself, which made it worse... my handicap crushed me, too.  Tough to carry any skins when there are 20+ handicaps playing to par...

I'll "second" those comments. When I first hit the MLA (Tour XDream with the milled face) I immediately noticed how much firmer the face felt vs the Odyssey with a dual-insert face and also vs a Cleveland with a TFI face. The sound is also much more noticeable on impact.

But like STUD said, it seems to put a really nice roll onto the ball .. and has definitely helped out my putting since I got it!

Just cant swing dropping $300 on a putter right now.  I thought there was some discount (30%) that I saw on the site recently, but could not get it to work.

Will go on wanting till I save enough pennies...

I'm interested to see how the MLA fares in both tests, but if it boils down to having to spend $300 it is going to be hard to pry my hands off of an Evnroll ER2.

Sorry to hear the discount wouldn't work. I understand being on that thin golf budget. Maybe a Christmas idea? Good luck!

OK, can add a little more info.

BTW, never start a project between Thanksgiving & Christmas. I thought I had a lot of time due to retirement...wrong

I started with the Lajosi as it's an old friend and went around the 4 position in no particular order but 4 putts from each tee marker (16 total), I wanted to mix it up a bit starting at the 3' distance then 6' and into 9'.

I hope I make sense.

Lajosi carbon handmade blade;

From 3' no missed putts

From 6' 1 missed putt (lip out)

From 9' 2 missed putts (1 lip out)

Odyssey #7 Oworks;

From 3' no missed putts

From 6' no missed putts

From 9' 2 missed putts (1 lipout)

MLA ProXDream;

From 3' no missed putts

From 6' 1 missed putt (badly)

From 9' 3 missed putts (1 lipout)

Now bear in mind that I have never owned or used a mallet putter so this was all new to me and frankly a bit disappointed in them on this obviously small test.

I figured from there take the putters out to real world courses and see what happens. I did not take the Lajosi out as I've had that for probably 8-10 years and well aware of its performance.

Odyssey #7 Oworks was really good, the new face design feels better than any putter I've ever used bar none. It performs well in fast and slow greens and admirably on lag putts. The SuperStroke 2.0 is really nice. After never using anything except std grips it was a great grip and got used to it quickly.

MLA ProXDream was a different story. Took me time to get used to the size of the mallet head and weight. First time out was not impressed. Played OK not spectacular. Second time OK, started sinking decent putts and getting used to head weight and Winn pistol grip. 3rd time a charm, I'm starting to live it. The fact that I was playing well throughout the day didn't hurt but putting in usually my “thing” and if I'm putting well in scoring well.

So up to this point the MLA is in the bag and the Odyssey is the backup. I hope to get back to the same practice green in the next week or two with the Odyssey & MLA putter and recreate the test from the 6' & 9' distances.

I am very curious as to how the OFFICIAL Test is doing. Should be some great information.

If there is any change I would make to the MLA it would be a new grip probably the SuperStroke2.0 or similar grip.

I started with the Lajosi as it's an old friend and went around the 4 position in no particular order but 4 putts from each tee marker (16 total), I wanted to mix it up a bit starting at the 3' distance then 6' and into 9'.

I hope I make sense.

Lajosi carbon handmade blade;

From 3' no missed putts

From 6' 1 missed putt (lip out)

From 9' 2 missed putts (1 lip out)

Odyssey #7 Oworks;

From 3' no missed putts

From 6' no missed putts

From 9' 2 missed putts (1 lipout)

MLA ProXDream;

If there is any change I would make to the MLA it would be a new grip probably the SuperStroke2.0 or similar grip.attachicon.gifIMG_1692.JPGattachicon.gifIMG_1693.JPGattachicon.gifIMG_1694.JPG

Sounds good Rick once you got use to it then you got use to it. Nice write up how much different is the alignment that is their tech compared the the o-works? Did you notice that you are aligning better for putts with it or there was little to no difference?

Rick, glad you were able to cram some putting in during the holidays. Do you have a winner yet or are you going to be testing more?

Actually at first I didn't like the MLA alignment system. It's quite new to me after years with a “dot” or “small line” for alignment. It takes getting used to. The Oworks was much easier for me to adapt to.

Can you see the teeny tiny dot? That's my focus point and the white wing is just in the periphery.
