Square Strike Wedge Unofficial Review

OG - you've inspired me to break out my Tour Edge "1 Out" .. their version of the Cleveland Smart Sole .. and give it another go.

Had used it some early last season then for whatever reasons this old guy can't exactly recall right now I went back to the "traditional" 58°.

The SSW definitely feels heavier than the Cleveland Smart Sole 58. I didn't put them on the scales however when I took them out of my truck and held one in each hand horizontally, the SSW came out the heavy weight champ.

On the Square Strike website they say the clubhead weight is...

"330 grams in line with most putters and about 30g heavier than a typical sand wedge"

(I believe many wedges are listed as D4 swing weight)

It's also more upright vs a typical wedge, at 68° vs 64°.

Hate to be a party pooper and the bearer of bad news; but I'm guessing you're not aware that you can't use a putter grip on anything other than a putter.

http://www.usga.org/rules/equipment-rules.html#!rule-14619,cross

Sorry buddy, but I found you a legal one.

https://www.ebay.com/i/191620466335?chn=ps

Actually I did know the rule. Fortunately for me (Seniors at my course) don't play USGA tournament golf anymore.  We have our own set of local rules for our blitz  Tuesday  group and Thursday skins. We have anywhere from 12 - 16 players on Tuesday and eight on Thursday.    In fact one of the guys still uses his belly putter and said he would whup ya arse with his cane if you tried to ban it's use.

For those who do play tournament golf and prefer a larger grip, there are tons of options that are legal.

Well the good thing is I'm not on Square Strike Wedge's payroll.  You can take it to the bank that I'll call it like I see it.   I won't be throwing green pastures out there to pull in the sheep who are drawn to the magic cure and Mother of all golf club miracles.  What da hell did I just say?    Anyways stay tuned because I'm in it for the long haul.

Looking forward to following along OG! Do you maintain a putting grip even out to 40 yards?

Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk

I use the claw when I'm on the greens and a conventional grip  on the fringe and beyond. Especially in the 40 yard range  ;)

Thanks buddy! I didn't have time to warm up with it today and it was right to the course. I've reviewed a lot of stuff over the years and I've had stuff making me roll my eyes at the beginning. The next thing ya know it's on like donkey kong. I've also had stuff blow my socks off to start with and fizzle down like an old man without his viagra.

Like I've said earlier this review will be at least eight weeks. You have to give the product time as you adjust to it.

I really appreciate this thread, OG. As I posted in previous threads, I have lofted hybrids that serve this purpose. Wishon 730CL 36 and 42, to be exact. As a slow swinging 71 year old, they serve me well from 130 and out but especially around the greens. Keep us posted, I only carry 11 clubs (6* gaps), so I have plenty of room in the bag for a specialty club!

Thanks for your honest report - I think we are all adult enough to accept the bad with the good.

As with any new stick, seldom are they like an instant eureka moment. There are sure to be some learning moments along the way (always need to warm up prior to teeing off) - and it always makes me cringe a little when somebody acts like a new club is faultless, it's the greatest thing since cut bread, or that it'll add 50 yards to your drives.

Larger grip to fit your hands? ... Sure, that's just fine tuning.

Look forward to your follow-ups.

Thanks buddy.  I would be doing a disservice to MGS and all our visitors if I sugar coated it.   That's not gonna happen.  I will say there were some aha moments shining through the tunnel. Let's put it this way, I wouldn't bet the farm that the SSW is not legit and will be a success with a large majority of the golfers who need this sort of thing.  I'm hoping I can develop some skill with it and learn how to allow the club to do what it is designed for.

I'm thinking it could benefit a lot of folks who struggle in that range.  A new grip is going on this morning and then we will see how much difference that makes.

Checkers as we call him that plays in our now regular Saturday group has been using one for around a month now. He is the same age you are ole gray. Now he is a pretty decent player anyhow and really creams the driver with a slight draw. He had been having trouble in the last year or so chunking wedges. And being Bear's brother and between Bear and myself being the club hoes we are he has had access to plenty of wedges. That club (we call it the green thing) has helped his short game 110%. I know of 3 chip ins with that thing playing on Saturdays with us just like the infomercial says. Now to be honest he had problems dialing it in on those slick fast greens we had for yesterday's round. But normally he has it dialed in good. In all honestly on average it has shaved 3 to 5 strokes a round for him. He likes the stock grip on it but then again he uses a conventional sized putter grip and a average traditional grip with his hands. He uses the same grip with his hands on it as he does hitting any other shot. It has helped him tremendously hope it works the same for you

Thanks for the input Stu! Once I get the Green Machine dialed in I'm hoping for similar results. I'm at the gym now and when finished heading over to Dicks. My friend can fit me to it a little better. I might even add a couple of inches when we pull the grip. I have a balance problem when bending over.

Ok folks I went over to see my buddy and he measured me from where I would be able to take a relaxed stance and have the club set square on the ground.  I ended up needing two more inches added to the overall length (35 to 37 inches) to make it a good fit.  We then popped on a Jumbo Tour Wrap grip and it feels awesome.  That's what I use on all my irons so it's a smooth transition to the SSW.

Here is a pic of my new addition Square Strike Wedge with the extension and new grip:

IMG_2515.JPG

Since I have been fit for my irons and driver recently, I'm a firm believer in your clubs fitting your body/swing type. Why not have a product like the SSW fit for your requirements. Not everyone has access to a fitting process and quite frankly with the SSW may not need it.  I'm 6'2" tall and I stand fairly tall on all my clubs because bending over too much plays havoc on my golf.  I also have jumbo grips on all my clubs as it's the proper fit for me.

Forum member RP58 will be happy to know that I am within the rules of golf with the round grip......  ;)

I'm excited to get back out there and give my custom fit SSW a go!

Hey, hey, hey now. ... I only threw it out there because I spent half an hour googling bigass green grips, and I didn't want to hear about anybody breaking a hip in your weekend group when somebody called you out on it in the ensuing wrestling match and you miss out on the Early Bird Special at the grill.

Ok folks a little update.  Tomorrow is our blitz day and you can pocket $30 or $40 bucks pending on how many show up.  I decided to drive out to my course and work on nothing but the SSW.  If you recollect I had the grip changed to a jumbo and the shaft lengthen two inches.  It's working for me!  I chipped in three today and tapped the flag several more times. That's the good news so now I can throw in some not so good stuff.   I'm having a hard time chipping off tight lies.  I have to be careful not to bounce into the ball. I 'm thinking choking down will help so I need to work on that pre round tomorrow morning.  Hitting out of good grass is easy peasy and will make you smile while watching the ball snug up to the hole.  I also found out that I can actually chunk the ball with this club.    The SSW is suppose to be near impossible to chunk a shot however I actually hit a couple today.  Only two out of gawd knows how many pitches and chips I hit ain't all bad.  Today was very productive and I'm pumped about taking them old boys to the woodshed tomorrow.  Stay tuned for some arse whupping news...  I hope  ;)

Thanks for asking as I forgot to mention this.  Today I dropped some shots about five foot below the greens surface and worked on tempo going to the elevated green.  It worked like a charm for me as I was pitching them close to the hole.  There were a few other guys chipping and I noticed they had stopped to watch as all my chips were coming in close to the hole.  I chipped one in.   Now on the downhill shots it's going to take some more practice for me as I was running them out past the hole.  Downhill shots on tight lies will be something I need to work on to get comfortable with.  If the lie is fluffy going down hill no problem.  It's easy to pitch it soft onto the green and let it leak out to the hole.   Something about those tight lie shots will continue to be a challenge until I become skilled at it.

I hope  ;)

Do not believe the hype ANYONE can chunk any club ANYTIME-- On the tight lies may I throw out one try to choke down and take your putting stroke. It may work for you. Also relax that right hand and don't throw it in too much
