WITB — 2020 ... first time for everything

Recommended Posts

Heyo! I've been spending the last six months or so putting together my new-ish bag. My last selection of clubs were somewhat tailored to the last course I played regularly. I've since moved, playing here and there. And until I've settled on a new home course, I opted for the same configuration. So without further ado ...

*Spoiler Alert: They are lefty clubs.*

 Driver, wood and hybrids—Ping G410

  • 10.5° with Tensei CK Orange 60 S — replacing Cleveland Hi-Bore XL
  • 3 14.5° with Project X Evenflow Black 85 6.0 — replacing TaylorMade R7 Steel
  • 19°, 22° with Alta CB 70 Red — replacing TaylorMade Rescue Dual

Ping clubs

At some point, I want to clarify the gapping between my 3 wood and 4 hybrid.

Irons—Mizuno

  • JPX 900 5-PW with Project X Lz 5.5 — replacing Mizuno MX-23

IMG_0061.thumb.jpeg.bc99e8b604d67641ce81241240a23be0.jpeg

I had been wanting these for a while, and one day out of nowhere they popped up at the store. I wasn't quite looking to replace my irons, but when these showed up, I just couldn't say no.

Wedges—Cleveland

  • CBX 2, 50°, 54°, 58° — replacing Mizuno R- and T-Series

IMG_0062.thumb.jpeg.f9967f1ae9b5f40b6deae2628c193465.jpeg

I had been struggling with my regular wedges for quite a while and finally I thought, let's not. I gotta say, so they're exactly what I expected they'd be, and the lofts fit my set better than the old ones.

Putter—Ping

  • Karsten Anser, 33 inch, Winn Dry-Tac Jumbo

 IMG_0070.thumb.jpeg.bc82483a00ebf8b68c9a0d1f2513b5ab.jpeg IMG_0072.thumb.jpeg.7da55b5c8bb6c5c32b0cb3a73512bec0.jpeg IMG_0069.thumb.jpeg.c8317e315c82dae0aa1098a39fe9bf2a.jpeg

The only club to make it from my old bag. I've tried other putters, but I'm just not as comfortable with them as I am with this fella, especially after I changed out the old grip with the oversized. It feels much more stable now.

The Rest

I'm trying out some new things, like a Bionics glove. I have no idea if it's any good, but I had a thumb injury, so I thought it might offer some stability.

IMG_0054.thumb.jpeg.c8c1c8341219348103f5d518ec7591f9.jpeg

I'm still working on choosing a ball. I've been playing with Wilson Staff Duo U and Duo Soft. I want to stay with a urethane ball, so I might try Snell MBT X next.

I decided to start keeping a notebook. I used to keep track of things on a course scorecard and later transpose it onto a computer spreadsheet, but I've decided that I'll keep a pen and pad handy and stay old school.

The 4-Yards More tee does not, in my humble opinion, give me four more yards on any given drive, but it does give me a consistent tee height, and I rarely lose or break them. I've used them for years, so until I run out, they stay in the bag.

IMG_0049.thumb.jpeg.6a19c17f55c0d8413ba20a0f2bf16632.jpeg IMG_0050.thumb.jpeg.99cbff5b3748bf1b621d239c018b29dc.jpeg

My brother wanted to try out a range finder. He read the MGS most wanted article and got the Nikon. He liked it, but decided that I could work it for him whenever we're together, so for now it stays with me. It's pretty decent, considering I've never used one before.

 IMG_0052.thumb.jpeg.97f95ee24ddb38812a5b58b3c7313677.jpeg

Lastly, my dragon carabiner. She's been with me for a while. Doesn't hurt to have a lucky charm, I suppose.

Awesome WITB and welcome to the lefty club!

Great set up and love the 50,54,58 combo. Personally find it so much more balanced then 56 60.

Good luck with the new courses and hope this set up is able to follow through for you!

Thanks! Truth be told, I rarely hit my 60. Now I'm more than happy to play with the 58.

I was similar and found I would actually use a 58 on full shots and rarely a 60.

Out of curiosity did you give the ping gapping thread a view before you got those g410 clubs?

I did not. Got my g410s during last summer, before I was active on the forum. Do you happen to have the link?

Great setup!. How do you like the CBX2s? I just got mine in a few weeks ago but have yet to use them due to New England weather being....New England weather....

What is your current gap between your wood and hybrid distance wise? I opted for 2H and 4H, the 2H gives me great distance like a 5W with a little more reliability.

Thanks! Currently loving the CBX2s. I was hitting them a couple weeks ago at the range and on the course, and it was clearly a big improvement over my old. My ball marks are dead center or on the toe.

I don't recall being that consistent before, but I guess I am now?

As for my woods and hybrids ... that's a longer story. I started going through my trackman data when I realized, oh yeah—late last year I injured my elbow and started gripping my driver, 3w, 3H and 4H too tightly, causing them to hook horribly. While researching how to get my elbow back and playing a couple times last Christmas with family, I injured my thumb in an unrelated accident. As soon as my thumb heals, I can resume the exercises to strengthen my joint muscles.

But reading what you wrote makes absolute sense. I going to read Apolloshowl's link and see what's what, get down to business and try some things out at the range.

I know this much: I can't swing a driving iron to save my life, and until I get my arm back completely, 7-iron is about the most club I can hit at the moment.
