When is it time for graphite iron shafts?

The MMT offerings are interesting, particularly the wedges. Only one S option and two TX? Weird. And then the jump from 113 to 125 in S on the MMT Tapers. Just seems odd.

Yeah they mmt are an intriguing option and how they designate flex and their weights have me puzzled on what I would consider going with if I went blind buy. You know I’m kinda partial to UST recoils which is what I have in my miuras so will always be hard to move away from them but I do see a run of some kind with mmt. Will be something I look at testing during demo days this year

I would say the TX is just a designation, they are probably similar to an X in other shafts. My opinion, of course.

I chose the 105 TX based on being fit for 110-115 gram shafts in the past. Seems to be working out OK so far.

Project X is in the game.  They have 2 graphite shafts;  the Catalyst is the line offering the heavier weights.

I haven't dived down into their offerings but had an opportunity to hit the MMT shafts and they are really good.

Ahh right, totally overlooked Catalyst! Just took a gander and I think something a little heavier would suit me.

So chatting with my guy who builds a lot of my stuff, he just suggested putting the 125 S PW shaft in all the wedges, which makes sense to me. But the spec sheets are really laid out in a strange fashion!

Interesting. My PX LS 6.0s are 120g and the TI S400s are 132g so I’d be splitting the difference at 124g.

Ultimately if it’s easier on the joints and performs the same I’ll be a happy golfer!

I was fitted into a set of Accra graphite iron shafts in December and I’m 50 and still swing my driver at 115 mph. I switched because I hit a lot of range balls and was starting to get joint pain in my shoulder, arms and hands (mainly fingers). We hit off the mats a lot at my club (don’t ask me, they can’t seem to keep grass alive on the range).

If you are properly fit into them.....I don’t think you’ll regret it. Today’s graphite shafts are way better and different than they were 10-20 years ago. Just take a look at the LPGA tour (probably the closest comparison to male amateur golfers in terms of swing speeds, etc)....there’s a LOT of ladies playing graphite iron shafts. They wouldn’t be playing them if steel was “always” better.

I love mine.....my dispersion and distance (meaning I hit them the actual yardage intended more often) have improved. Can’t beat the feeling when you flush one!

I was fitted into Recoils for my Wilson D7 Forged irons and I love them.  Another vote for graphite here.  They're much easier on my back and left wrist.  I only wish I'd changed sooner.

I very much appreciate the insights I’ve gotten here, thank you all. Now how to proceed, first I have to convince the warden I really need this...

Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission?

Re-shafted a 3 iron with graphite once, got it used off ebay, could definitely swing it faster it was like 85 grams.   A used set of graphite shafts might be easier to get approval for.

In all fairness I talked with the warden last night and she went silent for a few seconds (uh-oh) and then said “you play 3 times a week, if you need them you should get them.” I’m still pretty sure she’ll be looking at paddleboards in a few days knowing I can’t say anything, but all’s fair...

Funny coincidence, yesterday I played with a guy who had PXG 0311XP’s with MMT 60 iron shafts (full set, new bag, new Odyssey putter, etc.). He didn’t know it, I had to show him he had MMT’s (he’s a guy with with more money than knowledge), but he really liked them. I asked him about joint pain and he said they we great. At any rate I don’t doubt graphite could reduce pain and extend my “playing career.”

In 1998, I had an ice skating accident where I shattered my left wrist. Two years later, four surgeries, a steel plate with 13 screws and an inch of my hip, I decided to try golf again. I got a set of Jazz irons with graphite shafts. Twenty two years later I have Recoils in my irons. They have been my shaft of choice for the last three sets of irons, Hogan Ptx, Cobra F8 & Wilson D7.

Per my discussions with MGS they are supposed to be stock since they are in most wanted testing. Just checked the PXG site and they are listed as up-charge. Guess I will let them know.

Cool. When I was looking at what shaft options I wanted to go with the graphite was where I started and was hoping the mmt in the heavier weights would be an option even if upcharge. The steelfibers have changed from $39 to $49 a few times in gen2 and 3

Just to add to this conversation about the actual switch from steel to graphite. I did it last year, going from Nippon Modus 105s to Recoils. Honestly, if I didn't know I was swinging graphite, I wouldn't know. From a feel through the swing standpoint, I couldn't tell you a difference. I think with as many good options that are out there, you can find one that feels exactly like you want it to and gives all the performance/comfort benefits.

While I don't have any in play experience with composite shafts (yet), my time testing at the range and during fittings has me drawing the same conclusion.  I'd go as far as to say that in a blind test, were that practical, very few would be able to tell the difference.

This has been my experience as well. I don't feel anything different from a graphite shaft than steel, except maybe a bit less sting on thin or toe shots. Waggling them around they feel just as stiff, if not more stiff, than any steel shaft I've ever played.

I do think finding the right fit is important, and that's why it's good to see heavier shafts in the market now. I demo'ed a Callaway Apex Forged 7 iron with the MMT 95 stiff and while I liked the feel I felt it was a little light for me. I probably could have adjusted, but by going with the same weight class as what I had previously it was basically plug-and-play.

"Feels" are so interesting. For me, graphite has always felt MORE boardy to me than steel. Don't know if it's a swingweight thing or what, but I feel like I have no idea where the clubhead is whenever I've swung a graphite-shafted iron. This was a long long time ago though, and I know how far graphite shafts have progressed. My wrists are so bad from eating it on skateboards so many times in my life, and being on a computer now all the time, so I know that graphite is right around the corner for me.

Next time you're at the golf shop, see if you can demo the MMT in the Apex Forged. Based on my swingweights, the MMT plays slightly tip heavy and it might work well for feeling the head more.

MMT bois, LFGGGGGGGGG!

Went ahead and updated the sig block as a reminder 😉
