Sybase Match Play Preview & Pairings

After a two week break, the LPGA tour resumes this week with the playing of the Sybase Match Play Championship. This is the only tournament of the year that is not decided by stroke play. This is a single elimination tournament, lose once and you are out. The only change this year is that the players are not picking from a hat to determine their opponents. The players will be seeded according to their Rolex Ranking at the start of the event. Here are some of the major details:

What did you think of the rules violation with Morgan today? Good call or bad call?

I believe it was uncalled for. With only 4 players left on the field, an important semifinal and leading 3 up, it wasn't necessary. It will always have you wondering what if...

If the LPGA wants to speed up play, they should have done so since day 1 and have ZERO tolerance. 5 seconds over the shotclock? Penalty! Don't leave any gray areas open to controversy.

I wish the PGA had the balls to do the same thing!

Excellent points. It does sound rediculous to say, "The rule is you have 30 seconds once you get put on the clock. so for a par 3 that is 100 second to play the whole." Which is kinda fuzzy math in the first place, and it is based on someone else keeping time. But then to say. "She had 100 seconds, I gave her 120, but she took 129, so I called a penalty."

I totally agree with the fact that the timing was very poor. In a stroke play event, it is a.) more important to keep the pace of play up because you have to go 18 holes no matter what. and b.) the penalty is not as severe. You can recover from a one stroke penalty but to do so in Match play , well, there are only 18 chances in match play. c.) What is worse is that they match may well have been over, thus making it a shorter match, in the next two or three holes, but by assessing the penalty, they extended the match and made it last longer.

A penalty such as that should be enforced on day one, but come on, a penalty that severe at that point of the game had the effect of turning the match around not speeding up play.
