What do you do with your old clubs after you get new ones?

I tend to keep a set of regular and senior irons and woods for when people come down to visit, want to play golf but don't want to bring their clubs.  I have my original set of original Ping Eye2 irons (square grooves and all 1 iron through lob wedge with a Be Cu sand wedge) that I keep for sentimental reasons.  I guess the same can be said about the original Callaway Big Bertha driver I have too (it seems so small by today's standards).

I typically don't get rid of my putters.  I always tell my putter in play that they always could be replaced.  With having eight around, it knows I'm serious.

Other than the above, I give clubs to people who want to learn to play.

I give them to my kids. They have some pretty damned good clubs. Both have PXG 0311 irons and drivers. Spoiled, my first set were Dunlaps back in 1994

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

The current plan that I have for my old Daiwa blades is to keep them as a reminder of where the golf bug bit me. Even though I did not use them for longer than a few weeks, what a rough go I broke through and still wanted to play afterward. My Fiance hates them though, so we'll see.

It's crazy, I have a spending problem!!! I call it that so the wife understands golf math.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

When I get new clubs I play them and determine if they are a good fit for me and if so then I do trade in’s to whoever wants them and apply the credit to other clubs or accessories.

THIS!

Why spend extra when I can try other things for my game. I forsure enjoy trying all different clubs but never give up my current gamers until I know the new additions perform better.

Plus it never hurts to have a bag up set of clubs when the currents clubs don't perform... We all know tis always the clubs fault haha

I have been enjoying the game off and on over a period of 50+ years. I have kept two sets of clubs over the years while I have gifted 4-5 sets during that timeframe. I have been fortunate to be in a position to help others new to the game who may not have had the resources to purchase their first set or upgrade from a very basic starter set. The only stipulation I asked for was that they "play it forward" when the opportunity presents itself.

So if the old clubs are say 10 years old or more they probably aren't worth the hassle of selling for 100 bucks or whatever but the newer stuff is holding CRAZY resale value!!! I had a set of PING I500s from like 4 years back and I was going to give them to one of my guys and my buddy said "are you nuts"? He said I could pay for half my new irons and sure enough I looked and on Facebook Marketplace (the best way to sell something with no fees or shipping only) and they were selling for 500 bucks?? I paid 900 played them for 4 years and sold them for 500. That's a great deal. Iron sets and drivers and fairways/hybrids holding good value for the big brand equip

I am also a gifter, like many.  I haven't had a lot of sets of clubs, one I gave to a work buddy, who was just getting started, and more recently I gave my set before my last purchase in 2020, to my brother who was just getting back into the game.  I hadn't thought of it but from now on if there are more giftings , I'm going to insist like William P who've I've quoted, and insist on them being gifted on down the line.

I made an agreement with my wife that I wouldn’t hoard golf clubs. So I sell them to family at a steep discount and if they don’t want it I put it on fb marketplace. No spares, no backups. The only extra club I have right now is a TM R15 driver my brother asked me to sell for him and it hasn’t sold yet.

In general it is rather easy to get rid of the old clubs in FB groups / marketplace. Clubs are made for playing so I see no reason why they should be kept in my storage if someone can find a joy and excitement from them. As this is a hobby, it costs money and I'm okay with that. Therefore I don't even try to make profit when selling the clubs but to set a fair price and try to get rid of the clubs rather quickly instead of putting the price into skies and hoping there is someone that buys them anyways.

It's also nice to think in a way that selling your old clubs with a fair price can make this sport possible also for people that don't have that good income but want to play.

There are several options for what to do with old golf clubs after getting new ones:

1. Sell or Trade Them In: Many golf retailers and pro shops offer trade-in programs where you can exchange your old clubs for credit towards new ones or receive cash.

2. Donate Them: Consider donating your old clubs to charity or community organizations. Some programs provide golf equipment to underprivileged youth or individuals with disabilities who may not have access to their own clubs.

3. Give Them to Friends or Family: If your old clubs are still in good condition, you might offer them to friends, family members, or fellow golfers who could make use of them.

4. Keep Them as Spares: You could keep your old clubs as backup or spare clubs in case your new ones get damaged or lost.

5. Repurpose or Recycle: Get creative and repurpose your old clubs into new items or decorative pieces. Alternatively, you can recycle them at facilities that accept metal or sporting equipment.

Ultimately, the best option depends on the condition of your old clubs, your personal preferences, and whether you want to make some extra money or give back to the community.

It really depends on the situation; sometimes, I decide to keep my golf clubs, while other times I might sell them. It varies from club to club, but there are some that I hold onto for sentimental reasons. I have a fondness for golf clubs, appreciating the nostalgia and history associated with certain ones. For instance, I still have a collection of tinder gold apk clubs back in Canada.

I've kept my old clubs as backups or for friends who want to try golfing without investing too much initially. I've also created a sort of "retired" bag that I keep in my garage. It's not only a sentimental nod to my journey in golf but also a handy set for friends or family who might want to join me on the course without committing to buying their own clubs right away.

I have in recent years been giving mine to the local high school golf team… The clubs are usually given to an ill equipped high schooler. Sometimes sold at the team’s rummage sale. A couple of sets have been scavenged for there shafts and the shafts sold…

Seems to be working for all involved, including the wife person.

Got a new set a few months ago, my second set of irons. Bought my first set (Titleist AP2s) on Marketplace for $250.

Both of my kids are "into" golf now, and getting clubs from First Tee for $10 made it easy to say yes. I plan to pay it forward by cleaning up my old set and donating them to First Tee.

I don’t hang onto a lot of clubs. The Hogan mixed set I tested a few years ago was gifted to my younger brother and my i5 irons were gifted to my middle brother. Right now even after purchasing clubs the only extras hanging around are my g400 LST, my original PING Anser stainless from HS and college and that’s it. I prefer to do trade in through the retailer or manufacturer program.

However, now that I have caught the PXG bug, who doesn't have a trade in program, I go to ebay to sell my replaced equipment.

b. Driver specs (loft/flex). PXG Gen 6 10.5*

e. Your handicap or average 18 hole score. 18.6 index

f. Putter - Too many to list! But all are fitted with FlatCat grip.

Me personally I don't know what to do, my current set is my first set that really got me into golf and passionate about the sport again so I feel a weird attachment to them and don't want to let them go. But then again its money I could put towards a new set when I go get fitted. Am I alone or do you do the same? Curious to see everyone's thoughts.

Sets that I played for several seasons are retired and kept in their old bags as man cave decorations.

Sets with which I never developed a deep rapport are not very old,
still worth something in trade,
and have no sentimental value,
so they don't stick around long.

I usually have a tough time letting go of clubs but have given away sets in the past to help others get into the game. If it means bringing someone else into the fold, that tends to have more meaning than a few hundred dollars, if they stick with it anyway. Before I recently moved, I offloaded three sets and a number of random clubs in a cleanup effort - which I now regret selling (I'd almost rather donate) - so all the more reason to look for new/used sets to build up the surplus. I'm sure my wife will be thrilled.

Here in San Diego we have a lot of enlisted military.  I used to buy used clubs regularly to feed to those high schools, contacting the golf coach or Athletic Dir. to see what they need.  I don't live near the great swap meet anymore but I still donate either to a school or a teacher who has a kids program.  I figure, we are lucky, to be able to do what we do, and my sentiment to a club I loved is to share it with someone else.  My current bag is great, I'll let my previous clubs go.  I only have 5 clubs now to give away, and I recently bought 3 of them used, just for range practice.

Had 1 set that was 20 years old & another off brand set that was 8 years old that I needed to get rid of earlier this year. My wife made contact through Facebook "Freebox" with a girl's golf coach at a high school in a rural area. Said the men's coach was looking for clubs for a couple of students that were having trouble affording any clubs. Looked like a good home for something I needed to get out of the garage.

I️ keep a “backup” set of some old clubs. Of that set, I️ keep a little 8-club half-set in my car that I️ don’t mind if it gets overheated, so that if I️ get an impromptu window to hit the range, pitch-and-put, or get a few holes in after work, I️ can. Plus, it’s hard for me to get rid of this particular iron set; I️ love it so much. It’s the Titleist ZB forged irons, and I️ just can’t part with them.

I've never sold any clubs so have a 2nd bag in my garage with my prior irons, woods and wedges. I definitely will keep my putters as tech doesn't change too much it's all feel and nice to have options every now and then. I do think it's time to sell my old clubs but unsure of best way to do so? I've brought in a couple drivers to the local shops and can get like $75 which doesn't seem great but nice to apply that credit to new equipment.
