Lie angle advice

Recommended Posts

Looking for some advice on lie angles as I’m about to bring my irons in for their yearly loft/lie check. I have done some testing and am debating going 1 degree upright. I know lots dislike lie boards but at recent fitting I did, that’s what the fitter used.

A lie board says I should be about 1.5 degrees upright. The marker line on the ball shows about 1 degree upright would be good. I also believe 1 upright might help a bit with toe strikes which are my tendency.

Problem is, my miss with irons is an overdraw and sometimes a hook. Note for this next part, I’m a lefty. My really bad misses start a bit right of target and draw further right. Based on trackman I am still 5 degrees in to out so I must just close the face a ton on those misses. Even when I hit cuts trackman has my path in to out.

My question is, will going 1 degree upright just exacerbate the aforementioned miss? Am I better off sticking with my usual standard lie despite the lie board and marker line on ball tests? Thanks in advance.

On paper, your logic is correct that you’d encourage the draw bias by going one degree upright.

This leads me to believe there is something else causing your draw tendency. It could be something as simple as your right hand grip being too strong. It could also be your upper body rotating too quickly during the downswing.

Without seeing a video of your swing it’s difficult to tell. Do you have an instructor you work with?

1* is probably not going to be that big of a deal as it will only impact flight by a few yards.   But it will according to generalities make you draw it more.   Lie angle probably won't help with your toe strikes;  probably a compensation you make as part of your swing.

As many say lie boards lie and most people don't actually do them correctly.

My gut is you should go flatter honestly - is there a way for you to test lie angles at a fitting somewhere?

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

1° is only worth about 2-3 yards assuming nothing else changes and yes the lie board is a terrible way to determine lie. It requires to know path and other club delivery to know why the tape is reading what it does.

use the sharpie line test and see what it shows. Then adjust from there
